Principal / Director / Producer / Writer

Todd Phillips single-handedly demolished the old saw about comedy not getting any respect by racking up $1.4 billion with his global blockbuster franchise “The Hangover.” The New Yorker got his start making documentaries, including 1998’s controversial “Frat House,” which premiered at Sundance and won the doc Grand Jury Prize. That success led to his writing and directing his first feature films, the comedies “Road Trip” and “Old School,” for Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Picture Company.

Philips wrote and directed 2004’s “Starsky & Hutch” reboot and 2006’s “School for Scoundrels” and worked on “Borat,” which earned him an Oscar nom for best adapted screenplay. In 2008, he opened his production shingle, Green Hat Films, and has since produced both his film projects, including “Due Date” and “The Hangover” franchise, as well as TV projects such as “Project X” and “Limitless.”

Looking to stretch, the director leveraged his box office clout, left his comedy comfort zone and made the genre-defying “War Dogs,” which starred Jonah Hill and Miles Teller. Released in 2016 by Warner Bros., the dramedy, based on a true story, got mixed reviews and grossed a disappointing $42 million domestically. He is developing the upcoming ISIS origin series “Black Flags” for HBO with frequent collaborator Bradley Cooper through their production company Joint Effort, formed in 2014. He is also in talks to co-write and direct an untitled movie centered on the origins of the most iconic Batman villain, the Joker.
