Shaw cut the deal for DuVernay’s recent critically acclaimed Netflix documentary “13th”, a hard look at the issue of mass incarceration. She notes that DuVernay had to “fashion a path to the finished work as the project evolved, which meant the deal had to allow for a certain degree of flexibility to allow that process to take place. Shaw also teamed with ICM to sell longtime client Raoul Peck’s documentary “I Am Not Your Negro” to Magnolia, a project that has been in the making for more than 10 years. As the project found its footing, Shaw was able to use her professional relationships to reach talent like Samuel L. Jackson and Kendrick Lamar who “added enormously to the finished work.
