This Week in Entertainment 1939

The backstage drama during the production of “Gone With the Wind” was famously as sordid as the tale told in the film itself. On Valentine’s Day, less than a month after principal photography began, director George Cukor was gone, replaced by Victor Fleming, who would go on to win best director honors in the film’s Oscar night haul. Clark Gable’s biographer claims the Cukor was ousted because he made the star uncomfortable, but others say there were disagreements with producer David O. Selznick.
