Kristen Bell Calls for ‘Empathy and Diligence’ During SAG Awards Opening Monologue

As the first-ever host of the SAG Awards, Kristen Bell avoided mentioning Trump and the myriad of sexual misconduct allegations facing Hollywood by name during her opening monologue. She did, however, make an impassioned plea for “empathy and diligence.”

“It’s a true privilege to experience and share the wide scope of humanity through storytelling,” she said on stage. “Everyone’s story deserves to be told, especially now.”

“We are living in a watershed moment in time, and as we march forward with active momentum and open ears, let’s make sure we are leading the charge with empathy and diligence, because fear and anger never win the race,” she continued.

Bell serving as the ceremony’s first host isn’t the only milestone for SAG: Sunday’s show also boasts an all-female presenter line-up, with the 13 acting categories announced by women. Some men, however, will introduce clips of their films, but not any of the award winners.

Marisa Tomei, Rosanna Arquette, Mandy Moore, Olivia Munn, Niecy Nash, Gina Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Halle Berry, Emma Stone, Lupita Nyong’o, Dakota Fanning, Kelly Marie Tran, and SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris comprise the presenter line-up.

Bell has been an active proponent of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, which were a massive presence on the red carpet. Recently, she offered, along with Chrissy Teigen and “Parks & Recreation” and “The Good Place” creator Mike Schur, to help pay McKayla Maroney’s fee for potentially breaking an NDA in order to speak out against former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar.
