The animated series has an all-star voice cast and will be produced as a Sky Original as the pay-TV platform pushes more deeply into kids and family viewing. The series will be on flagship channel Sky One as well as the Sky Kids app, which launched last year, and Sky’s Now TV streaming service.
In addition to Kate Winslet (“Titanic”), Rosamund Pike (“Gone Girl”), Taron Egerton (“Kingsman”), and Warwick Davis (“Harry Potter”), actors Bel Powley (“Benidorm”) and Edvin Endre (“Vikings”) have joined the cast.
Tove Jansson created the Moomins, one of Finland’s biggest exports, and the series will be based upon the original comic strips. Finland’s Gutsy Animation will produce the animated series, which will be directed by Steve Box (“Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit”). It is also distributing.
Lucy Murphy, head of kids content for Sky, said: “With their beguiling adventures, magical setting and a cast of fantastical creatures, Tove Jansson’s beautiful books have been a well-deserved family favorite for decades, and we can’t wait to bring the joyous Moomin world to Sky families in this fabulous new series.”
Marika Makaroff, creative director and executive producer at Gutsy Animations, added: “‘Moominvalley’ is very much a Finnish-British collaboration, with a top-quality U.K. team that includes the Oscar-winning director Steve Box and Emmy-winning writing duo Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler – alongside all of this incredible acting talent.”
Sky has operations in Italy, Germany, and Spain, but the “Moominvalley” deal only covers the U.K.
