MSNBC primetime host Lawrence O’Donnell indicated on his program Thursday evening that he had signed a new contact to stay at the NBCUniversal-owned cable-news outlet, bringing to an end a period of conjecture over whether or not he and the network would part ways.

“Yes I will be saying hi to Rachel Maddow at 10pm for the foreseeable future,” O’Donnell tweeted during the 11 p.m. hour Wednesday night. During the last segment of his program Wednesday evening, O’Donnell asked an intern, “You know where I’ll be next week?” The answer: “I will be sitting right here, talking about the James Comey hearing and everything else that happens next week, and everything that happens for the next couple of years.”

MSNBC hasreason to keep O’Donnell at the desk for his 10 p.m. program,“The Last Word.” For the month of May, his program tied his time-slot rival,“Hannity” on Fox News Channel, for the lead among the viewers most desired by advertisers in news programming, people between 25 and 54. Citing Nielsen data, MSNBC said “The Last Word”  captured an average of 2.2 million viewers and 523,000 viewers between 25 and 54.

A former legislative aide to New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, O’Donnell has held forth in the program since 2010, and got his start on the network as a contributor on “Morning Joe” and as a fill-in host for Keith Olbermann.

  8. Made my day! Would not only miss O’Donnell’s evening program, but his handsome face. Great to hear you are staying, Lawrence.

  9. Jennie says:

    Great to hear

  10. probably a good decision, but no one compares to maddow. i’d support bringing keith back.

  11. Anna Gregory says:

Now, can we get rid of Greta and cut down the hours of Morning Joe? And, where’s Steve Kornacki? You put that blond woman in his place and she’s no bright bulb!

    • George Lewis says:

Greta is usually boring & doesn’t fit into MSNBC, the hysterical comedy news channel. Then again, she is or was a ludicrous scientologist so that’s a match to the MSNBC nuts? Morning Joe does fit as he & his hysterical sidekick Mika are a riot. Kornacki fits too (though not as crazy as other MSNBC nuts).

    • Christine Levin says:

      Totally agree!

  12. We’re so tired of winning. Too much winning, too high ratings. VERY SAD.

  13. Linda says:

I am truly happy that Lawrence O’Donnell will be staying

I turn off other programs who seem pro. Trump and GOP healthcare and budget cuts etc

Rachel Lawrence Ari Melber are refreshing and prove what they say is fact

I don’t want to watch center right

Would like to see moderate Republicans too

I feel relieved about Lawrence staying

  14. Steve Colmar says:

Lawrence is great, and NBCU would be crazy to drop a host tied with Hannity while part of the number one ratings block.
I wish Chris Hayes had higher numbers–he’s my favorite MSNBC person. Rehiring Keith for 7pm would be a great lead in for the night.

    • George Lewis says:

Facts. Larry O’s overall ratings (not counting any occasional fluke/blip) don’t come anywhere close to the great Sean Hannity.

      • The Truth says:

Not facts. What you discount as the “occasional fluke/blip” is actually a trend. O’Donnell is now regularly in close contention with Hannity in both key demo and overall ratings and has beaten him recently several times, despite Hannity’s ascension to alpha dog anchor at Fox. Read the real numbers and weep.

      • Andy Martin says:

Being a News Channel that is politically in opposition with the party in charge of the White House always increases viewership. Fox News had eight years of anti Obama that helped them, now Fox has to hitch their wagon to Trump. Being a defender is never as sexy as being on the offensive side of the game. Expect MSNBC’s rising ratings to continue while Fox News ratings slide picks up steam.

  15. George Lewis says:

Best would be no network platform for Lary O who’s the worst of both worlds: idiotic & boring. Very boring. Well if he is somewhere, there’s no better match ideologically than MSNBC & right next to yuck yuck. It does detract though (at least that hour) from MSNBC’s excellence as the comedy news channel & best hysterical comedy network.

  16. cadavra says:

    Thank God some sanity prevailed.

    • George Lewis says:

Liberalism does not qualify as a legitimate religion. Please be respectful in invoking the Lord.

      • cadavra says:

Liberalism is not a religion. It’s a belief system. Liberals believe in the true, just and loving God, not the hateful, intolerant God created and “worshipped” by conservatives. Go read Jesus’ teachings and try to understand how totally unfit you are to call yourself a Christian.

  17. millerfilm says:

Excellent! Now, I know to continue NOT watching MSNBC.

  18. Kaboom! says:

And here we all thought he was going to Fox News.

    • George Lewis says:

FOX is Fair & Balanced. Larry O is boring. FOX isn’t boring (other than Guttfeld & Steve Doocy).

      • jsm1963 says:

Conspiracy theories can be fun. But they also have no value.

      • The Truth says:

Fox is fair and balanced? Anyone with a brain — including intelligent conservatives — knows Fox News is intentional right wing horseshit and that their slogan is a sad joke. It’s no wonder that you find real news boring in contrast to Fox News fiction.
