Stephen Colbert in Hot Water Over ‘Homophobic’ Donald Trump Joke

Stephen Colbert in Hot Water Over

“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert is facing backlash for a joke he made about President Donald Trump on Monday night that many are calling “homophobic.”

During his opening monologue, Colbert went off on Trump over the President’s treatment of CBS News’ John Dickerson, who saw an interview with Trump abruptly ended when he asked about the President’s unproven claims that then-President Obama had wiretapped Trump and members of his campaign. As Dickerson and Colbert are both CBS employees, Colbert felt it his duty to say the things Dickerson himself could not.

“Sir, you attract more skinheads than free Rogaine,” Colbert said near the end of the insult-laden rant. “You have more people marching against you than cancer. You talk like a sign language gorilla that got hit in the head. In fact, the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c–k holster.” The final remark has drawn the internet’s ire, with viewers taking to social media to declare Colbert is homophobic. The hashtag #FireColbert began spreading around Twitter, along with calls for people to boycott sponsors of the late-night show.

CBS did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.

Of course, this is not the first time Colbert has been the subject of a campaign to get him pulled off the air. Back in 2014 when he was hosting “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central, that show’s official Twitter account posted a message saying, ““I am willing to show Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever.” The tweet was meant to satirize Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snider, who started a charity to benefit Native Americans. Many perceived the tweet as a racist assault on Asians and Asian-Americans, leading to the creation of the hashtag #CancelColbert. Colbert reveled in the controversy, however, even promoting it on future episodes of “The Colbert Report.”

If and how he will respond to the current firestorm remains to be seen. Read some of the reactions to Colbert’s joke below.

    Fire Colbert.
I cannot believe Mr. Colbert is still working on TV . His ridiculous rants about anyone or thing are soooooooooooooo boring that I will never watch another show on this network. Absolutely pathetic & way out of line.

  2. It’s true it was disgusting through the whole things as Colbert aptly and repeatedly highlighted all the disgusting behaviours and words trump engages in. From standing outside doors of pageant contestants (actually he walked in….more disgusting) to bragging about the size of his tax return to grade school name calling of a journalism show. When will these cretins get it that Colbert is comedy. Faux news is pretending to be news….the comparison is ridiculous. trump engages is ongoing epic buffoonery and disgusting behaviour. Colbert just does his job and calls him out on it. Bravo. BTW how is Colbert the homophobic one for suggesting trump sucks putin’s dick? Are these people saying that sort of behaviour is bad and disgusting? Isn’t that homophobic? He really is just using an analogy. He admitted he admires little weird Korean guy too. That and the the little dude disgust me.

  3. Lisa says:

Yes, Stephen Colbert needs to be fired. He is disgusting. I’m sick of his remarks about our president. He is so disrespectful, who does he thinks he is? Give President Trump a chance. He may not be a great politician but he’s a great business man and a regular person who loves and cares about this great country. Why doesn’t Colbert move to another country, since he hates our president so much, and publicly make jokes about their leader and see what happens to him. His head would be served on a platter. Give SC the ax, literally!

  4. alicja says:

Colbert needs to leave immediately. He insults President of USA, he insults all of Americans. The world is watching.

    • Michael Zimmerman says:

Colbert doesn’t insult all Americans. I have no problem with Colbert’s comedy regarding Donald Trump. I actually applaud it. I find Donald Trump to be a racist, bigoted misogynistic buffoon who has been a total embarrassment to this country with his tweeting as well as his total lack of knowledge of foreign and domestic policy. Trump has a history of caring only about himself and no one else. He has a history of ripping people off in his business dealings. Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Tablet

      • mitz says:

Colbert is not funny…he needs to find some new material..his constant insulting of the President of the United States is hateful, demeaning, disrespectiful …he has a lot of room to talk with what flows out of his vulgar mouth…what must he be teaching his 3 children. His spewing of hatred is most likely part of what is happening with all the brutal activities around the country with rallies, flag burning etc. Wise up Colbert….you should be dropped from the network for such insulting and pure hatred remarks that you say with a satisified smile on your face. Shame on you buddy.

  5. Joani says:

We know that Stephen Colbert has brain damage and that his mother kept him anyway, but He has truly shown that he is offensive, a dirtbag, a jerk, moron, sub-human, stupid, nasty piece of garbage, AND HE SHOULD BE FIRED. HE HAS SAID SOMETHING CRUDE and nasty about our president on every show, because the damn network he is on, CBS, constantly shows a clip on TV ads of EVERY one of his upcoming shows. so now I will never watch NCIS criminal minds, etc. again. Shame on them. CBS better wake up and realize that they are idiots for having Colbert host ANY show on their network!

  6. You can tell from the opposition to the election of D.J.T. that the American people hate a LOSER and judging by the clashes between those who support or oppose D.J.T. the people of the United States have to do a better job of voting for their own peers who have the trust of the American people. D.J.T. is our “King Ralph” who may or may not have had the assistance of the enemies of democracy.

  7. sal says:

The shootings are part of a pattern of increasing intensity of hostility on the left.
Conservative college students are afraid they’ll be beaten on campus. Snoop Doggshit makes a video depicting a man made up to look like the President being shot, or a so-called comedian Kathy Griffin holding up the president’s head covered in blood, or Madonna saying that she would like to blow up the White House, or Ashley Judd saying she wants the President to bleed or Stephen Colbert saying the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s cock and in New York City, a play that shows the president being assassinated, or it’s Democratic leading national politicians Kirsten Gillibrand using vulgarity because they can’t find any common language to talk.

The Left Hates You. Leftists don’t merely disagree with you. They don’t merely feel you are misguided. They don’t think you are merely wrong. They hate you. They want you enslaved and obedient. Once you get that, everything that is happening now will make sense. And you will understand. You are normal, and therefore a heretic. You refuse to bow to their idols, to subscribe to their twisted catechisms, to praise their false gods. This is unforgivable. You must burn.

  8. Christohper Hobby says:

I have been attacked by homophobe William Herod of Buffalo NY. I think outing these people is the only thing that will change their behaviour.

  9. Dan Culp says:

Homophobic, in my opinion, is a ridiculously blatant misnomer as applied 98% of the time.

Homophobic would be if he saw two women kissing and either cringed on the basis of the nature of that interaction, or even more clearly, ran away screaming because of it.

But even if we set aside the ridiculous illogic of conflating phobia (aka fear) with dislike and other attitudes of that nature, to seriously claim that Colbert’s joke indicates anything of the sort is to miss the point, and to take offense to it on that basis seems to me to be indicative of an addiction to the sensation of feeling offended.

Colbert was clearly mocking Trump by implying non-reciprocal subservience to Putin using a crude sexual metaphor. Drawing on this imagery regarding Trump is no more “homophobic” than saying the same thing about Angela Merkel or another female world leader would be “heterophobic.” Do you see how that’s a precise analog, and yet wouldn’t trigger any reaction involving the sexual orientation of the subjects? What that tells you is that you’re trying to be offended and trying to make it about sexual orientation when it clearly isn’t.

Now PLEASE don’t misunderstand me to say that the joke wasn’t offensive, disgusting, or abhorrent. It was all of those things. But not because Colbert made an anti-gay comment. He didn’t. It’s because he debased a subject as important as the Presidency and world politics by subjecting it to graphic sexual imagery that is beyond the pale of the civilized discourse that, when it’s operating reasonably correctly, is vital to the health of our republic.

Unless a politician has done something newsworthy of a sexual nature that needs to be discussed (and he has in the past, in fairness, but nothing relevant to the moment), I’d like to think we’re still capable of living in a society where we can keep our minds off of the private parts of our government leaders. Or at least do so when it comes to the mass media. Or at least do so when it comes to broadcast network TV. I can feel the standards lowering as I type this.

And please also don’t get me wrong by assuming I think the President or the Presidency is some unassailable paragon of American patriotism. I’ve never really bought into the whole “respect the office of the Presidency” defense to any little slight against the man or the role the man is filling. As far as I see it, that sort of deference is the privilege of a monarch, and not being obligated to show disproportionate respect to either the man or the office is part of what our Founding Fathers righteously rebelled against. As far as I am concerned, you can show respect for the man (or surely some day, woman) in the oval office based entirely on your opinion of how much he has earned your respect, just like any other person you come across. And since the office was created not so that we could worship at its altar, but rather so that it could serve and protect our nation and its people, I think it’s okay to show respect for the office only to the extent you believe it is operating appropriately to further those purposes. To disrespect the President or the Presidency is our sacred republican (note the small “r”) right. Call the President a lying scoundrel if that is your true and informed opinion. Call for a Constitutional amendment to abolish the Presidency if you think the office is an abomination for one reason or another. That sort of discourse is exactly what we’re supposed to be doing.

But to reduce these important subjects to the level of an infantile fellatio reference, the type you might have expected to hear in your 8th grade locker room in gym class, I submit, is nothing short of an embarrassment to us all as a society. Or at least those of us that believe that as a nation, we are meant to be better than that.

  10. Mousey says:

    Freedom of speech!🔈🔉🔊🎶🎵🎼🎤🎺🎻🎸🎷

  11. Catherine Runnoe says:

Colbert, thank you for your sanity, wit, humor. That orange chaos pudgie pie whole is an embarrassment to sane, kind and empathetic americans.

  12. Lilyana Acharya says:

Hold your fire for a minute, guys! Colbert was just expressing himself, not determining everything. And, 99% of the time, he was using actual historical evidence to back up his viewpoint. Just calm down! If I may, Colbert, like Dickerson, is one of the most competent people I have ever seen. A great number of people may not think that, but think about it, a great number of others don’t! Opinion, which can be changeable, is no reason to #FireColbert

  13. says:

Thank you for eloquently and accurately presenting the truth! You rock, Colbert!

  14. Fred says:

I think all bashers of Colbert should lighten up. If you don’t like the show, don’t watch it. But do not try to cancel it, others such as myself like the show. You don’t see me forcing the show down your throats, then why try to force your beliefs on other people? Ever hear the right of Free Speech and Expression?

    • Dan Culp says:

Free speech and expression, of course, are not a guarantee that any particular person can say anything he wants and retain the privilege to be continually employed by a company that broadcasts said speech/expression. The 1st Amendment is a constraint against essentially government censorship. Certainly it is not there to curtail countervailing speech…including by those who advocate taking lawful action to limit the impact of said speech, or limiting the extent of any non-public platform (eg privately-held broadcasting facilities) offered to any given speaker.

I’m not saying I think Colbert should be fired. But I’m not confident that you fully understand what free speech is all about as a right.

  15. Alp Louis says:

You and your small mind and small stature; I am ashamed for the world to see and hear you. You’re everything un-American! Shame on you!

  16. Ruth says:

You are a bad actor who tries to be funny. Time to respect the President of my country….America. Colbert should be jailed for disgusting, vile suggestions regarding President Trump.

  17. Sherry Rimini says:

S.C. You’re an idiot. Never watched…Never will.was asked if I saw the monologue…so I looked it up and watched it. Now I see why I’m not a all.

  18. B Flora says:

I’m willing to bet that all of you poor, ignorant Trump lovers never made it past the 6th grade.

  19. Sydney says:

So Colbert should be fired for saying something that I wouldn’t even call homophobic but trump can talk about grabbing women’s pussys and become president…. ok

  20. Tina says:

Too bad CBS…..way out of line! Does not matter if you like the President or not it comes down to respect…if you can allow your show hosts to disrespect the position of president I am done with your station. I was taught as a kid to respect the position of the person in charge no matter if you agree or not. The rants and disrespective comments are not funny and should not be allowed for this high office. When did respect leave our society…oh yeah…as soon as the people voted last November and the vote did not agree with you……..#nocbsinmyhome

  21. Cindy Shafer says:

Fire him!!!!! I won’t ever watch him again or that station

  22. Jack says:

We have the most disgusting person ever in the Oval Office. And that says something about who is there. Colbert was perfectly right to take him to task. He not only did it for the CBS Family but for all decent Americans. Unfortunately that distinction does not include the majority of those commenting on this site. But then I imagine that they, like their hero, have never done anything but sit around complaining about how bad they have been treated. Nothing like the spoiled bully claiming to be the one bullied. Now that is the optimum of disgust. Colbert should be given the Medal of Freedom, not fired. That distinction should be left for Trump.

    • John Suni says:

quote: “But then I imagine that they (trump fans) have never done anything but sit around complaining about how bad they have been treated.”

That’s funny, because at his rallies (where he filled whole stadiums) trump fans waited in the rain for hours. Meanwhile, all those nutjobs who rioted after trump won EIGHTY PERCENT could not be bothered to VOTE!

You might hate them, but those trump fans rolled up their sleeves and got sh*t done! The only thing new about this is that it’s the right saying “I’m offended” which is usually page 1 of the leftists handbook: “how to win by complaining”.

  23. Because of Colbert’s crude humor and CBS This Morning featuring his comments as NEWS, I just quit watching CBS.

  24. Tj says:

How is it that he can say something about president Trump and not get fired, and Mike Ditka says something bout Obama and fired ASAP something wrong with this, how is this not racist.

  25. Jim Allen says:

Turn off CBS until Colbert is gone!!

  26. Jaws3259 says:

The highlight of my day is watching the first 20 minutes of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert!!!! He is right on the money with his Trump comments…..

    • Dave says:

Colbert has push the limit too far. This leftist liberal media non-funny TV no talent SOB needs to go. I stopped watching all TV except for public tv programs because of the relentless attack of the media on the republicans. It goes deeper than people realize. There is an agenda of the left to try to destroy the right and they will stop at nothing. Amazing how the citizen of the US still think for themselves and vote their conscience. No matter what the 4th party of our government (media) tries, the people speak their mind in the voting booth.

  27. Jaws3259 says:

Are you serious. Commander In Chief……NOT!!! Maybe a KKK Chief, or a distant relative of Hitler…..You really think he’s looking out for all are best interests. Oh My God!! WAKE UP!!

  28. This is a storm in a teacup. There was no homophobic sentiment expressed. Maybe he should have said kiss his ass, because that was ultimately the meaning. Steve Colbert is ot a homophobic. He is a supporter of LBGT community.i don’t believe that can be said about POTUS whose cabinet reflects his preference for billionaire, straight, men. I think there is one token black man and one woman.
Regarding last weeks other ant in a mountain is the hypocritical outrage being expressed about what he said about Ivsnka and Trump. Wasn’t it Trump himself who raised this issue on the Howard Stern radio show when he admitted he would like to date Ivanka, a dsat there as Stern assessed her body and beauty and hotness. Other father,s would have stopped the continuation of the sexual assessment.
And didn’t Trump recently on T V say he and Ivanka “have sex in common” What the hell wasthat all about and what parent says things like that.
What Bill Mayer said just doesn’t,t reach the level of honesty. The comments however rea h the level of hypocritism.
    Patricia Wagner Montminy,
    Sterling , Ma

    • John Suni says:

And Obama was shown to have a pay disparity against women in his campaign & cabinet: but the left exempted him of that apparently.

  29. Condoning lewd speech, which should never be allowed anywhere on mainstream Television and outright character assignation on our President.
The Mainstream Media are hypocrite’s; What would the reaction be if Stephen Colbert would have said this lewd comment about President Obama?

  30. bruce varney says:

since I don’t call Donald putin my president anyway I think your remarks were perfect and to the point.not half as bad as
as the stuff that comes out of his trap.

  31. John Tyler says:

I think a good punishment would be ……”TO GRAB HIM BY HIS PUSSYFOOTING. Hypocrites!

  32. Viola McLaughlin says:

My family will not watch this asshole or his station he should be saying funny jokes he’s so good at that’s enough out of him our President Trump deserves better than this white trash.

  33. PAUL says:

He should be fired, he is a very low down quality person. Unacceptable. I feel shame just thinking this imbecil belongs to America.

  34. Anthony Sprinkle says:

Love Colbert. He was making fun of the fuktard potus.

  35. Micky Zuc says:

Any seemingly inappropriate comment about Trump is less obscene than the truth.

  36. Thank God for Steven Colbert. Someone needs to stand up to Trump who totally insulted John Dickerson and Face the Nation. Trump is the most disgusting and vile creature. He talked openly and seriously about violating women, yet his supporters are offended because Colbert, a comedian, told a joke. We need to protect freedom of speech and the 1st amendment. If you’re offended by Colbert then don’t watch him. I’m offended by Trump, Conway, Spicer etc and I don’t watch them. My choice.

  37. colbert comes off as ass, can’t stand him

  38. Aaron Epstein says:

Sorry Colbert! The homophobic remark is definitely out of line. You should know from your own experience, there are many negative jokes about Trump, which Trump brings on himself, without homophobia. The line was crossed this time.

  39. mary says:

Thank God for Colbert and other commedians who speak “truth to power.” I’m 74 and , have seen a lot of strange doings in the white house but this guy, Trump, caps all. Definitely, keep Colbert!

    • John Suni says:

“strange things” like not agreeing to the Paris Accords where America has to make quilt payments to third world nations for the innovation for our citizens we’ve created? Sign me up for those strange things!

  40. Vi Winston says:

Some people are assuming what he said, I heard a bleep and could not read his lips.I think people have dirty minds and think the worst. To me some of the things Donald Trump has said without a bleep are far worse. Like John McCain was not a war hero, or the comment he made on the bus, or Mexicans are criminals, women who get abortions should be punished should I go on?

    • John Suni says:

No: “Illegal aliens” are criminals is what he said. And he’s by definition right. If you break the law by entering the country you are ipso facto a criminal. This incremental slight-of-hand changing of trump quotes is what you get from watching TOO MUCH CBS.

If you actually look at trump quotes (without the colbert-style twisting) he is not anti-gay, racist, or anti-muslim.

  41. Jonathan says:

I find it curious that Right Wing Trump supporters who despise gays and would deny them basic rights are now so offended that a joke which, only with an extreme stretch, could be construed as “homophobic.”

    • John Suni says:

I actually find your charge to know the hearts of millions of people and claim they are hateful based on a difference of political opinion, FAR MORE OFFENSIVE than trump comments or colbert comments. By what metric do you claim to know that trump supporters are anti-gay? I have never seen trump make an anti-gay comment, nor have I seen anti-gay sentiment at his rallies. Have you? Can you quote it, or provide a link or evidence? Or are you just being hateful? I thought the left was the ideology of tolerance. You sound horribly INTOLERANT: imputing insidious agendas on millions of people with no evidence whatsoever.

NOW YOU KNOW why the flyover states have had ENOUGH of the left’s hypocrisy (we’re the team of tolerance, but disagree and we HATE on you!)

    • Dan Culp says:

I agree with you that it would be, at a minimum, an extreme stretch to call it homophobic (even if that term, as applied, weren’t a terrible word choice to begin with). But I don’t think the charge of homophobia is the main quarrel the average Trump supporter would have with the joke. It seems like Colbert is drawing fire from both left and right on this one, and I doubt the criticisms find much overlap between the two groups.

  42. Sita rogers says:

Colbert has one of the most brilliant comedic minds on air at this time. His late night show reveals and expresses more real news than any of the cable news networks. Bless the United States of America for freedom of speech. To fire him would be a major attack on our democracy and Constitution

  43. paul says:

    #Colbertwinner #ImpeachTrump #Americahasalwaysbeengreat

  44. jill says:

Keep Colbert, 1st amnendent right! Our president speaks with a filthy mouth, and is a hypocrit and an embarrassment . There is a difference between satire and governing.

  45. Louisa says:

Love you Colbert!! Don’t let them silence you!!! This is not a dictatorship…..yet. Thanks to courageous people like you! Trump is Hitler and all smart people see it. These hillbilly trump lovers are so stupid they break your heart.

  46. Deplorable says:

HA HA … Victim of his own BS. The leftists have turned on this idiot.

    • Sharkey says:

WTF are you drunk? Or typical uneducated trump supporter?

    • Michelle says:

You might want to use a dictionary and look up the word deplorable. Says a lot about you that you are proud of it- or by your comment about “leftists” you don’t comprehend much.

  47. William Fiime says:

William I use to like him . It seems to be personal it’s not joking anymore. Sad ,feel sorry for him.

    • Vernon says:

I only feel sad for you- for ignorant republicans who bought trumps con. It’s your fault we have a total embarrassment for a president.- You we’re selfish & thought trump would help you. Oh poor silent majority snowflakes– News flash assholes, the GOP is stripping you of your insurance, you are paying for the wall, while rich silver spooners like trump fill the swamp & their pockets. Deal with it until democrats & libruls bail you out.

      • Dan Culp says:

When accusing a stranger of ignorance, it is often helpful to demonstrate age-appropriate levels of proficiency in the areas of spelling, grammar, and mechanics.

  48. Sheri says:

Love the comment “the true Americans”, as in the Nazis were the only true Germans???? Only those you choose to include are “true”. Smells of McCarthyism…a vicious propaganda attack on our personal freedoms. Now we have gone to the other extreme by not rigorously investigating the Trump cabinet’s ties with Russia.

  49. Sheri says:

His comments were against Fascist Trump and weren’t in the least homophobic but you pick out what you want to hear.

  50. Sheri says:

OMG. That was a perfect comeback!!!
