The end of “Game of Thrones” is on the horizon, but creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have already mapped out their next plan at HBO for when they officially depart Westeros.

HBO has given a series order to “Confederate,” a new drama that hails from Benioff and Weiss, Variety has learned. The show has no ties to “Game of Thrones” and is not one of the many potential prequels in development at the network.

“Confederate” chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone – freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.

Production on “Confederate” will begin after the final season of “Game of Thrones.”

Season 7 of “Thrones” just began last weekend, premiering with record ratings. Season 8 is expected to debut in late 2018 or early 2019. Together, both seasons will span just 13 episodes.

Benioff and Weiss created “Confederate” and will serve showrunners, executive producers and writers, along with Nichelle Tramble Spellman (“Justified,” “The Good Wife”) and Malcolm Spellman (“Empire”), who will co-write the series and executive produce. “Game of Thrones” producers Carolyn Strauss and Bernadette Caulfield will also serve as executive producers.

‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoffs in the Works at HBO

“As the brilliant ‘Game of Thrones’ winds down to its final season, we are thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with Dan and David, knowing that any subject they take on will result in a unique and ambitious series,” said HBO programming president, Casey Bloys. “Their intelligent, wry and visually stunning approach to storytelling has a way of engaging an audience and taking them on an unforgettable journey. ‘Confederate’ promises to be no exception, and we are honored to be adding the talented team of Nichelle and Malcolm Spellman to the mix.”

“We have discussed ‘Confederate’ for years, originally as a concept for a feature film. But our experience on ‘Thrones’ has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO. There won’t be dragons or White Walkers in this series, but we are creating a world, and we couldn’t imagine better partners in world-building than Nichelle and Malcolm, who have impressed us for a long time with their wit, their imagination and their Scrabble-playing skills,” said Benioff and Weiss.

As for the “Game of Thrones” prequels that are in the works at HBO, Benioff and Weiss are not attached to any of the shows, so should any of those “Thrones” series get the greenlight, the duo’s focus will be on “Confederate.”

Benioff and Weiss are repped by CAA and Management 360.

Southern slavery is, of course, the economic
engine that powers the Yankee States of
America. Where would the computer industry be
without Southern slaves to hire in as lowly
tech contractors, then poison, drug and rape
them for their software and computer designs,
developments and ideas? Where would the YSA
music industry be without Southern slaves to
drug, poison and rob of their words and music?
Where would the YSA medical industry be without
Southern slaves to drug, poison and rob of
    their medical technology?

Of course Hollywood Has to disseminate
    anti-Southern propaganda to justify the
maintenance of a Southern slave caste in the
YSA, to continue the free ride enjoyed by
Yankees at the expense of the South. Who to
imagineer the horrors of free Southerners and
    a free South?

Who does Hollywood turn to for its anti-white,
    anti-Southern, anti-Christian Neo-Nazi vision
of Li’l Abner? Who else but David Benioff and
D.B. Weiss, whose homicidal, rape, misogyny,
torture and incest driven fantasies demonized
white medieval Europe in Game of Thrones? I
never tuned into GoT and I won’t be tuning into
their latest claptrap. It ain’t like Hollywood
has ever gotten rich catering to an intelligent

  2. mymetatrope says:

Haven’t we got enough troubles on our hands, without encouraging divisive thinking? Among his destructive endeavors, POTUS is stirring the pot for his supporters, the KKK is bobbing around: this is NOT the time. I understand that ART must provoke. Still, you cannot yell “fire” in a crowded theater and it is becoming hot and crowded in here. This material is over the top. The only saving grace is that most alt-right persons probably don’t watch much HBO. Unfortunately, they may make an exception for this.

  3. Dan Ybarra says:

For a really alternate storyline, check out “The Slave Players”. A book by a new author, Megan Allen, Coming out this October.
Megan Allen and ‘The Slave Players’ both have their roots in the USA.
‘The Slave Players’ is a novel exploring racial tensions.
There is violence across the nation, and one army colonel has a vision of restoring a terrible type of order. He wants to play a game. A game in which the pre-Civil War ‘glory days’ of slavery are reinstated with a crucial difference – this time white people will be serving black masters.
Megan Allen has long been active in fighting for human and animal rights, and ‘The Slave Players’ is a successor to her organisation of a high school walk-out to protest the display of the Confederate flag, which led to its removal from multiple California schools. She is currently living in London.

  4. Jess says:

I can’t believe that there are actually people who think that this show will glorify slavery. No, it will not. On the contrary, the show will present the evil of slavery if applied to a modern setting. Do you think Man in High Castle glorifies Nazism? Do you think the Handmaids Tale glorifies misogyny? SMH

  5. I’m sure we’ll have plenty of Uncle Toms and Tomettes lined up to be a part of this nonsense.

    • Rev says:

“Uncle Tom” meaning hard-working African Americans that don’t rely on victimization, have no issues sharing the values the rest of modern society live by, work hard to raise their families and support themselves, without the need to be coddled by the government or blaming everything on White People. Heaven forbid there are PoCs that can think for themselves without having to fall in line with the group think coming from the modern plantation that is black victimization.

    • Jax says:

I agree that creating such a show in the current climate is irresponsible unless done very well. I have never watched the Game of Thrones or Empire, so I cannot comment on how well the producers would do in creating this so-called timeline. But if anyone thinks this is a novel idea, then clearly they are clueless to real history. It’s called the “Lost Cause” scenario.

If you want to truly have a novel idea for a different timeline, then base the plot on there being a union, a confederacy and what was intended all along by Radical Republicans of relocating the freedmen. There is already a basis for this. Just ask what would have happened had Edward P. McCabe been successful?

  6. Keisha says:

If actors refuse to act in this series then it would not be made. Maybe that is the answer

  7. Eric Gutierrez says:

Please tell us this is satire. That hbo is actually going to make “Underground ” instead. That someone somewhere in a position of creative authority said, “maybe graphic depictions of black degradation are not the best way to make this point. By the way, what is the point again?”

And how many people of color were in the room when this was greenlighted? If their names were Tom or Mammy it doesn’t count.

  8. connie says:

As if ‘A Handmaids Tale’ isn’t depressing enough

  9. connie says:

This is all we need, as if the Trumpsters and the KKK didn’t fan enough flames down here in the south. I am really dreading this…

  10. J.Smith says:

Thanks for GOT but Confederate gets a big “No Thanks” for me.

  11. JimG says:

It’s interesting that all it says is that the South successfully seceded from the Union. It also says Third Civil War. Does this imply that there was a 2nd Civil War? Also it is very possible for the South to have seceded without a war. If it wasn’t for Lincoln’s insistence that the South should not exit the Grand Experiments of 1776 and 1787 over something like “the curious institution” there were plenty of people who were perfectly willing to appease the South and just simply allow them to become a new nation. Also while slavery might have become institutionalized it’s unlikely that it would have been as such in the North. And without the South’s inexplicable influence during and after the failed Reconstruction (which would make a great subject to cover although no happy ending [depending on your point of view I guess]) the USA might be much further along as far as race relations go. I assume though that none of this will be covered; a show from GoT showrunners is probably not going to be to concerned with those kinds of realistic scenarios. There be dragons!

  12. Steven says:

Ummm…this sounds like a very dull show. I’m sure they will frame it to be more exciting than it will be and throw in the whole I created “Game of Thrones” to try and entice fantasy viewers. The truth is there have been many shows like this including the recently canceled drama “Underground” that was also very good but still got canned. No, we don’t need another show about how awful slavery was, we need a show that won’t be afraid to tell it like it is in today’s world. Talk about today’s slavery. Debt, sex, and drugs, rich vs poor. Everything we need is here today not in the past. Just my Opinion. Let’s do a slave show for today, where the slaves aren’t all black but every color. Yet again just my opinion.

  13. Quianna says:

As a black woman I really want to see this show. I thought all the backlash would be from black people but I see a lot of white people commenting negative. I want to see this production happen. people always make up stories about the south and yada. im just wondering how they would pull off such and insane story line. what time period would it take place in *1960 or 2000 or even 2017* how would they run this slavery institute * would every house hold have a slave or would it be plantation style, or would it work like a prison system. in addition to who’s point of view would it stem from. im hoping they don’t go and just completely bash the south but make it subtle. make characters that you like but at the same time it tears you apart because of there beliefs. urgh I want this show it opens soo many doors

    • playfulpanthress says:

Underground got canceled because of that Sinclair group that is buying up stations and networks faster than people realized and their more insidious than Fox. Underground should be picked up, this stupid premise should die.

Tell HBO how you feel. Help kill this thing!!

  14. kurvaceouspeacocks says:

I love the Game of Thrones. If you do not enjoy it, or have the stomach to devour the distasteful disguising gross fighting torching eating of a animal heart profane language but, yet old English dialect and other possible yummy surprises, than the Game of Thrones is not for you. Simply don’t watch, but for the rest of us who loves this type of storytelling and it simply cast into a time warp in which perhaps we would love to have lived, don’t take away our glory and thunder of loving “THE GAME OF THRONES” What in Seven Hell’s is going on? It’s not for the faint of heart. I for one am a woman with a strong heart and wild spirit and imagination that allows me to escape to another century of time, to live out being one of the characters. Guess who? Her name starts with a “K”

  15. Wes says:

It’s just a TV SHOW! It’s intent will be entertainment and I’m sure the producers have no intention of glorifying slavery or white supremacy. Jesus people, get a grip! Why does EVERYTHING these days have to be made into a racial or political argument?

    • playfulpanthress says:

If you really think this show will wake some white people as to the past plight of blacks or be honest on what it would be like for slaves, you are LYING to yourself. This show will do no such thing.

But it will be interesting to see if people like you, who defend this show now, would still defend it if they switch the historical situations of people.

You want to see a groundbreaking show: SWITCH THE RACES ON CONFEDERATE.

Make it so the South wins, and then the slaves revolt successfully and make slaves out of their previous owners. If the show claims it has no agenda to glorify slavery and the oppressors there should be no problem switching the races. It isn’t accurate history anyway, so why not make the whites slaves? It is just entertainment without motivation, right?

    • kurvaceouspeacocks says:

I agree! We should be a lot further in humanity. Respect for one another, be able to agree and disagree laugh love who we want without any backlash of any sorts, yes Wes, I agree with you 100% enough is enough Planet Earth.

    • nerdrage says:

Amen. To delve into real history is a risk, because some people will get riled up. What’s the alternatvie, everything is dragons and superheroes? That’s the safe approach, just turn everything into fantasy. It’s also cowardly. I’d rather this show was about real history, not alt-history, but Underground tried that and got cancelled. Alt-history is better than out and out fantasy.

  16. Rocky D says:

Oh brother. Here comes another anti-White, anti-Southern Hollyweird crapudrama.

  17. Rosanna Marie says:

As a white person I can’t imagine a worse scenario..or a less entertaining one. And I’m sure all the whites will be depicted as monsters just as some of the comments suggest that this would be geared toward whites as some kind of entertainment. Not at all.. The least entertaining show I can imagine.. ………………It seems Hollywood is somehow hellbent on driving wedges between and polarizing the races. Maybe it’s time we stopped letting them manipulate us with crap like this. We’re the real people that live out here in the real world…If they really go through with this…and it’s not a joke..who in the world would be watching? Extremes of both races..That’s who..No one else will bother.

    • nerdrage says:

Breaking Bad was about meth, The Wire was about drugs and poverty, The Sopranos was about organized crime, GoT is rape and gore, Westworld is about brutality, Homeland is about paranoia, The Man in the High Castle is a hideous fantasy about the triumph of fascism and The Handmaid’s Tale is misogynist. Sounds like Confederate is right in the ballpark for premium TV. Maybe you should stick with something safe on CBS.

      • Rosanna Marie says:

If you’re talking to me I don’t watch network and I have watched all the shows that you refer to. I don’t need safe. I just don’t need idiotic. This is a divisive way to fuel an already heated way that some blacks already view whites. ..Fiction or non fiction..I can tell the difference but that’s not even the point. I see nothing favorable or positive coming from a show with that suggested scenario in the current environment..

  18. Reminds me of the books by Harry Turtledove. And in that series a southern victory did not turn out at all well for the South, ultimately. (For instance when World War I rolled around the USA sided with Germany and the Confederacy with Britain and France. In the books the South was destroyed, though remained independent and the USA annexed Canada.)

Beyond that, very odd how people in the twenty first century are such immature children when it comes to an inability to discern fiction from reality. Well, safe spaces for all and boring and tedious entertainment going forward it is likely to be, then. Hope you enjoy it.

  19. Melody says:

What an abominable show this will be. Pure 100% torture… HBO’s punishment for America for electing Trump I guess.

  20. rhornsburg says:

Surely this can’t be real, as tone-deaf as it is. This is just cover for the GoT spin-off, right? It seems stupid to put out details like this for a fake show just to cover-up the making of a different show, but it’s still not as stupid as making a “CSA won and slavery still exists” show in 2017.

  21. TV only a Trump supporter could love. “Underground” gets canned and this “project” gets greenlit. Typical tonedeaf Hollywood

  22. VforValmont says:

“The man in the Southern Castle”

    Been there, done that.

  23. Yvette says:

In this Trump environment I can’t believe HBO is going to put into production a story where the South wins???? I won’t be watching it! GoT…fans..wont be tuning in for this race dividing topic! The viewing numbers that HBO is enjoying will drop drastically! #FAIL!!!

    • Warren says:

You are expressing an opinion you don’t really have. You know this is a “What if” kind of scenario. Just like the Amazon Prime show “Man In The High Castle”. You know this so why are you making a troll post expressing an opinion you don’t hold? Just curious.

  24. Grantsmedallion says:

As any Civil War historian knows, slavery was going to end whether the South won or lost. It simply was no longer profitable in the industrial revolution; plantations had already begun switching to a paid laborer system with mostly Irish workers and out-producing the slave plantations when the first shots were fired at Ft. Sumpter. Slavery might have lasted longer as a household thing, but as an industrial institution slavery simple couldn’t compete with the day laborer system.

    • nerdrage says:

…unless slavery is extended more for social control than pure economics. Think Jim Crow on steroids. I could see it happening. Keep slavery going as the best way to maintain the racial power structure despite its economic drawbacks. At the very least, I’ll give these guys a chance to make a plausible case for this scenario. I’m interested to see how they handle it.

  25. This sounds Klantastic! In all serious, if they wanted to do alternate reality slave era entertainment. How about a world in which Reconstruction wasn’t abandoned? America would be so much further along.

    • Rocky D says:

      who said reconstruction ever ended?

      • nerdrage says:

        Err…the history books say so.

Sure it would be nice to see history played out minus Jim Crow. Civil rights take effect in the 1860s, not the 1960s. But who would this be for, people who want escapist pablum? I think this would be more racially offensive than a show that takes the opposite approach, let’s really amp up the terrors of racism and slavery for ya.

  26. 44forever says:

Well HBO can kiss my butt goodbye as soon as GoT ends. This is foul and the idea that all involved thinks that it’s okay just confirms the depths of decay and depravity this country has sunk to.

  27. Len says:

I will not be watching Confederate. Show is a bad idea. Show sounds like some white man’s wet dream, but black people’s worst nightmare

    • nerdrage says:

If they do it right, it will be everyone’s worst nightmare, assuming everyone has some common sense, heart and soul. Only knuckle-dragging idiots could interpret this scenario as a good thing. How many of them subscribe to HBO? I think of HBO as being more for the educated crowd. Could be wrong.

  28. BATFLECK says:

    Dear HBO,

I am tired. Of many things, but first, and foremost, I am tired of black bodies being commodified for the gains of white men and women who will never know the pain of existing in a world that treats you like a second class human being. I am tired of asking for representation for little black boys and girls and getting TV shows and movies where our stories aren’t even our own anymore, but the fantasies of rich white men whose sole goal is to get a few Emmy nominations off of the commodification of slavery.

I am tired, HBO, of waking up to the news of yet another black person being murdered in this country with no justice but now hearing that I’ll get to see it play out on TV every Sunday night does nothing but make me more exhausted.

Because to you, my life in modern slavery is nothing but a potential romance arc for your white knight who loves his slave too much to set her free. My pain is nothing in comparison to the money you may get from advertisers for their 30-second slots. My pain is nothing to you but season two highlights and a previously on reel.

I don’t care how many light skinned, curly haired actresses you fill these roles with. I don’t care if your white knights went to an HBCU and minored in African studies. I don’t care how many consultants share my skin color. I don’t care if the slaves overthrow their masters by the midseason finale. I don’t care if you wake up Morgan Freeman from his sunken place and have him throw his support behind this.

What I do care about is this being pulled from your schedule. Because I don’t need a “What if” story about slavery when the effects are still around. I grew up in slavery, Hbo, I exist in a system that supports slavery.

My life as a modern day slave will never mean as much as the show runners of this show. My voice will never mean as much, and that’s why this letter will be overlooked. And if it’s not I will be dismissed because my fears, my experience, my needs pale in comparison to the men in charge.

But just know, HBO, if I wanted a reality show, I’d head to Bravo.

Look forward to this being canceled.

    • Relaxitback says:

Hey bud, you should really take some relaxing breaths.

      • After you take your head out of your ass. Everything they’re saying is true. Just because you don’t get it, does not mean it isn’t accurate.

      • Grantsmedallion says:

Make your own shows then. If you want more “black representation” then pick up a camera and go make a movie, otherwise stop complaining about how other people spend their money.

  29. SHEL N says:

    • Mackie Messer says:

Batfleck is right and can say whatever he wants. If cement-headed clowns like Grantsmedallion and Relaxitback can’t handle it they need to get a clue and grow up. And for your information, Grantsmedallion, the money they are spending comes from the public that subsidizes HBO with subscriptions and that includes all races.

  30. Mac says:

I’d just like to clarify for everyone, this show is an alternate timeline story. Creating a show where the southern states won the civil war does not in any way correlate to supporting modern day slavery. Another show developed by Amazon, the Man in the High Castle, is a show about the axis powers winning World World II. I assure you none of the showrunners support nazism, they are just trying to tell an entertaining story. As far and Dave and Dan go, they are excellent storytellers who I am confident will have another successful show because eventually people will realize that it is just that. A show. Which, by the way, even mentions that the show focuses on characters on both sides of the spectrum. Just like in Game of Thrones, there will be many characters to show your support for. If you are uptight about an already declared fictional story, as the article above states there will be plenty of abolitionists you can side with. I long for a world where people don’t mistake storytelling for anything more than it is.

    • Whyaminotsurprised says:

I agree that Dave and Dan are fabulous storytellers, but I think people are upset because the events they’re seemingly going to depict are essentially events happening in real life America today. Man in the High Castle and Handmaids Tale are taking fascism and mysoginy to an extreme that isn’t easily viewable on YouTube and Facebook every day.

  31. mofoplz says:

Wow. Seriously? Guys this is your next ‘good’ idea? Making spank bank episodes for Confederate and KKK die hards who already think the South won? America’s still mired in racism and teetering on a dystopian reality now – how do we need a ‘fantasy’ series to help that move forward culturally? I will bet there wasn’t one African American at HBO that green lit this project. Sorry White Dudes – your idea about what qualifies for entertainment is way off. ((sigh))

  32. No thanks. My family fought too hard to get away from slavery and Jim Crow to watch something that shows what my life could have been like. I’ll pass.

  33. Whit says:

This seems dumb; apparently Benioff and Weiss are unfamiliar with our actual timeline, where the South may have lost the war, but quickly won the peace that followed. This resulted in Jim Crow, Sharecropping as a new form of slavery, and a disproportionate amount of political power nationally for decades….arguably even today.

    • Chase Hotti says:

Please clarify.. the democrats lost the war and the democrats started Jim crow. The democrats still support slavery today. They just call it welfare.

      • Nate says:

You do realize that the parties have switched in the last one hundred years? What you would call a democrat then would be a republican now and what is a reblican now you would call a democrat then? Also, welfare isn’t a new form of slavery. That’s just a talking point conservatives like to use to cover up their lack of compassion for helping the poor.

  34. DarkHawk says:

No you don’t get to come up with a series that glorifies slavery.

    • Relaxitback says:

How do you know that it will glorify slavery? If you’ve seen Game of Thrones, then you know these guys are smart. They will likely use that setup to show the exact opposite. Right now, there isn’t much to go on, so people need to calm down. I know that in this day and age, the cause-heads eat up a lot of the bandwidth in media, but if you are one of those types, you’d better find a way to get a thicker skin. Being a raging cause-head isn’t good for your blood pressure. You might just get so offended one day that you give yourself a heart attack.

  35. J.D. says:

Sounds like the perfect show for the far right. After all this is how they want the country. Definately a no watch for me. Good luck on your misadventures of Beniof & Weiss. You will have an avid watcher from trump.

  36. TheSouthWontRiseAgain says:

Who thought this was a good idea? Ummm Issa hell to the no no no for me

  37. DC says:

    Confederate sounds lame.
