Bill O’Reilly to Take Vacation in Midst of Sexual Harassment Controversy

Bill O’Reilly

Bill O’Reilly’s Fox News Channel presence in recent days has sparked social-media outrage and advertiser defections. If he goes off the air for a while, will calm return?

The popular Fox News Channel host raised that very question when he told viewers during the last few minutes of his “O’Reilly Factor” broadcast on Tuesday night that he would take a few days off as part of a pre-planned vacation even as controversy swirled around him.  He explained that he often takes vacation around the start of spring. “We all need R&R. Put it to good use,” he told viewers.  He is expected to return to the air April 24.

“The arrangements, including airline and hotel reservations, for this vacation were made last October. The vacation involves a group of people, and the timing coincides with the period Mr. O’Reilly often takes off in and around his children’s spring break,” said Mark Fabiani, a spokesman for O’Reilly, in an emailed statement. “Other than the vacation guest hosts, The Factor broadcast will remain unchanged until Mr. O’Reilly’s return post-vacation.”

Executives at Fox News will no doubt see whether the move gives the network some breathing room. O’Reilly has been under scrutiny since April 1, when the New York Times detailed the host’s settlements of harassment allegations with five women totaling at least $13 million. In a statement, O’Reilly denied wrongdoing and said his high profile in TV made him a “target for those who would harm me and my employer.”

Vacation or No, Fox News Still Sends Troubling Message by Standing by Bill O’Reilly

The fallout from the story has been swift, with calls being issued for O’Reilly to step down from the program he has hosted since 1996 and dozens of advertisers moving their commercials out of his show and into other Fox News programming. In the month prior to the Times report, “O’Reilly Factor” carried an average of 33 national ads totaling more than 14 minutes in an average broadcast, according to data from Kantar Media. On Friday, the show included just seven spots totaling 4 minutes and 40 seconds of air time. Fox News has been running the program in recent days with eight to 10 minutes of extra content.

Tuesday night’s broadcast appeared to contain at least 10 national commercials from smaller sponsors and direct-response advertisers, including Rosland Capital, TheraBreath, the Gotham Steel Crisper Tray and Gravely mowers.

Keeping O’Reilly on the air and as a viable personality has been critical for Fox News Channel. The anchor regularly attracts more than 3 million viewers to his 8 p.m. program, setting up an audience that is can be funneled throughout the cable-news outlet’s primetime lineup. Since the election, O’Reilly’s audience has soared. His “Factor” program attracted an average of more than 3.9 million viewers in the first quarter of 2017 — compared to an average of 3.3 million viewers for all of 2016.

The scandal hits as the network’s parent, 21st Century Fox, has tried to move its cable-news network to new heights. Ratings have generally increased since the election. Fox News is an integral part of the overall company and generates a significant chunk of the parent’s operating profit.

On Monday night’s broadcast, O’Reilly had hinted he might take a break. “I like to take some time off around Easter,” he said. “It’s calming.”

That may be so, but O’Reilly is an “operation mockingbird” CIA asset who backed fellow CIA operative Hillary Clinton during the campaign. O’Reilly will support Trump only so far as he does not step too firmly on the toes of the deep state and the big banks which are laundering profits from the illegal drug trade. His mission is to hold up the status quo so Republicans don’t go looking for alt-right news sites like Infowars that don’t support prohibition. (The CIA and the Pentagon have a near monopoly on the illegal drug trade and they are very afraid that the public is waking up to the fact that prohibition is a cruel hoax that was never intended to reduce crime or drug abuse.)

  5. The Truth says:

How pathetic that O’Reilly and Fox are bending over backwards to make it appear that everything is business as usual with O’Reilly’s “vacation.” Too much information about pre-planning, etc. A telltale sign of lying is embellishment of the story with a blizzard of details. The No Spin Zone is rotating faster than a gale force tornado.

And to those who cite the increase in O’Reilly’s ratings as evidence of popular support, people who would never watch his show are tuning in now to watch the worm squirm.

  6. So, if ur NOT GUILTY! Why did they PAID $13million!!! CAN U EXPLAIN THAT???

  7. 1stgeneration says:

You Libs only wish they will can him- not a chance

    • The Truth says:

Unfortunately, it’s probable that O’Reilly will skate on this scandal, just as other rich and powerful men like Trump, Clinton, and Limbaugh have avoided justice. We live in a society that values money over morality. The onus now is on the advertisers who expressed their disdain by declining to continue supporting The O’Reilly Factor in light of the serial sexual harassment claims. Will they stick to their guns and stand up for women? Or will they backslide and abandon the moral high ground?

  8. Cow Girl Diva says:

Please cover REAL news… the nuclear bomb threat from North Korea or other issues of REAL importance…!!! Bill O’Reilly being attacked by women who want some of his money is NOT news….!!! Many of these “sexual” harassment cases are simply because men perhaps flirted with women (boys will be boys) and the women labeled something it was NOT in order to get some $$$$….!!! It’s all about the money…!!! Period..!

    • The Truth says:

You’re absolutely delusional if you think O’Reilly and Fox would pay out $13 million to five women if he were innocent. Obviously, 60 advertisers don’t buy your “boys will be boys” bullshit. Wake up and join the 21st century. That kind of male chauvinist crap no longer cuts it.

  9. kern says:

The “Progressive Left” will never give up on its efforts to drive commentators who oppose their radical agenda which can only succeed as far as it is able to sow divisiveness between social classes, races, ethnic group and the sexes. O’Reilly has been convicted of nothing, and, accepting fully the charges enumerated in the New York Times, even the accusations against him are largely based on conjunctions.

As with previous efforts to drive leading conservative commentators off the air by pressuring advertisers (e.g., Rush Limbaugh on several occasions), this one (which already is failing in the light of the growth in O’Reilly’s viewing audience), will come to naught. The problem is that the haters who pressure advertisers are far smaller in number and influence than they, their Soros dollars, and the “progressive” media would have us believe. What emerges most strongly from this story is the desire of the “progressives ” to silent dissent by abrogating freedom of speech.

    • The Truth says:

The only ones trying to silence anyone in this situation are O’Reilly and Fox. They paid $13 million to keep O’Reilly’s scumbag behavior from being openly revealed in court. Whether or not greed prevails over justice in this situation — just as it did with gasbag Limbaugh — and O’Reilly survives, this is hardly a progressive crusade. If you think the 60 advertisers who have walked away from O’Reilly are lefties, you’re an idiot. They’re still advertising on Fox News, but they can’t countenance O’Reilly’s stench. Not all conservatives are as willfully ignorant as you are.

  10. geoffreycotter says:

don’t believe a word of it. nothing more than a cheap female pile on of liars who cant make it on their own talent lets see if fox crumbles to these low life if the do and don’t back O’reilly fox will suffer in the long run. I hate to type

    • The Truth says:

Oh sure. Blame the victims. If you really want to know the truth about what kind of man O’Reilly is — which you obviously don’t — read the court documents regarding his divorce. He verbally and physically abused his former wife in front of his children. Now he claims he was protecting them when he chose not to defend himself against charges he says are false. No one with a brain believes him.

  11. Timely Comment says:

Repeated press drumbeat of O’Reilly’s Sexual Assault allegations— so he escapes the heat to take a vacation?

Given O’Reilly’s history of sexual “misconduct”, it’s amazing that FOX News, Roger Ailes (who has allegations of his own), and President Trump continue to renew his contract and support him. And continue to place value to his reportage and pronouncements

News of Sexual Assault allegations— the Press reports, people will decide. And no ‘spin’ will remove the stench from sticking to him AND his employers…

How else will they tell me how incredible I am?”

    And hilarity ensues.
