International Newswire: MipTV, Cannes Series Create In Development

Project-based forum adds to the dual events’ battery of industry attractions for drama producers

No guessing what event happens next week in international. As the TV industry rounds the final bend before this weekend’s MipJunior and full-on Mipcom over Oct. 16-19, in today’s International Newswire, next April’s MipTV and CannesSeries announce In Development, a two-day project-based forum; “Missions,” a breakthrough 2017 French sci-fi series, adds more deals: and, having posted record export figures in 2016, French TV animation announces latest deals in the run-up to the Cannes trade fair.

MIPTV, CANNES SERIES ADD IN DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE

Sony Pictures Televison Networks’ Marie Jacobsen, Studiocanal TV’s Rola Bauer and RTL Television’s Philipp Steffens have been appointed ambassadors for In Development, a two-strand TV drama project forum which adds another building block to the dual MipTV-CannesSeries market and festival unspooling next April. To run April 10-11, alongside MipTV and CannesSeries at Cannes Gare Maritime, In Development sees pitching sessions before an industry audience of commissioning editors, distributors and talent agencies from both seasoned writers on “early-stage” drama projects and “programs in development,” which have advanced towards production. In Development will also host one-to-one matchmaking opportunities, panels and keynotes. MipTV has run an International Drama Co-production Summit since 2011. Bulwarking MipTV’s industry presence, both in terms of presenting companies and industry audience, In Development raises the ante in its length and range and crucially, places screenwriters at the center of its early stage focus when the battle for premium TV will be fought in large part by a battle for premium screenwriting talent.

Further ambassadors are Jimmy Desmarais at France’s Atlantique Productions; BBC Worldwide’s Ben Donald; Jane Gogan at Ireland’s RTE; Serge Hayat at Cinemage & Capucines Investment Funds; and screenwriter Claire Lemaréchal (“Desperate Parents”), Pinewood TV’s Christian Wikander and Anna Winger, creator of “Deutschland 83/86.”

RTL, DR JOIN BBC ON ‘MISSIONS’

One of the most noteworthy TV creative trends in France this year has been the build of sometimes low-fi, sci-fi/futuristic series, after Lagardère Studios scored last year with “Trepalium,” a not-too-distant-future dystopia thriller. Heading this year’s pack is “Missions,” an economically-told mission-to-Mars thriller which has been the making of its French producer, Empreinte Digitale, won a Critics Jury Prize at the MipDrama Screenings and has now, sold by France’s AB Group, been picked up by not only BBC Four but also Germany’s RTL Passion, RTL’s premium pay TV channel, which have second-window rights, and DR, which has tied down exclusive rights to Denmark.

DISNEY GIVES PAT THE DOG A SECOND HOME IN GERMANY

Up 42% on 2015 overseas revenues, animation helped drive all program type French exports to a record high of €336 million ($396 million), including co-production coin, in 2016. One of France’s biggest bona fide hits has been the warmly-colored and warm-hearted “Pat the Dog,” produced by SuperProd and Italy’s Animoka, and commissioned by Canal Plus and RAI. The Walt Disney Company in Germany has become one of the attester companies to give “Pat the Dog”a  home, securing it for free-to-air release on its Disney Channel. Turner’s Boomerang pay TV channel has the first TV window in Germany, after Turner acquired EMEA and Asia Pacific on the tale of a bug-eyed dog and its owner, based on the popular French mobile game “Spacedog.”

XILAM STRIKES 230-EPISODE DEAL WITH DE AGOSTINI

Pouring on the pre-Junior deal announcements for French animation companies, Marc du Pontavice’s Xilam, one of the French animation companies which has expanded fastest over the last few years, thanks in part to beneficial tax rebates, has closed a significant 230-episode volume deal with Italy’s De Agostini Editore. Linking two of Europe’s TV animation leaders, deal, Xilam’s first with De Agostini, gives De Agostini exclusive pay TV rights to segs of Xilam’s flagship “Oggy & the Cockroaches” (pictured below) “Zig & Sharks,” and “A Kind of Magic.” among other shows. Xilam runs studios in Paris, Lyon and Angouleme in France and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
