‘Marvel’s Runaways’ Stars Praise Series’ Diversity at Hulu Premiere

While celebrating the premiere of Hulu’s new series “Marvel’s Runaways” at the Regency Bruin Theatre, the cast was unanimous in their response to why the lesser-known Marvel property resonated with so many fans: Diversity.

“It’s not just the diverse cultures, but the diverse voices that each of the characters have,” Ariela Barer, who plays Gert, told Variety. “I think everyone can find their voice in these characters, and through their perspective, experience this story the way they want to.”

Runaways,” which is based on the comic series by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, follows a group of kids — who become friends thanks to their parents gathering once a year for a charity event — that discover their parents are part of a crime organization called the Pride. The six kids band together and, thanks to their newly blossoming abilities, work to take down the Pride.

“Brian K. Vaughan made an amazing comic series that is so diverse,” Rhenzy Feliz, who plays Alex Wilder, said. “It’s so diverse and tackles so many things. It gave teenagers a voice. If you’re young, you have a voice.”

The series, which was being toted as “The O.C.” with superpowers long before Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage signed on as the showrunners, also stars Gregg Sulkin, Virginia Gardner, Allegra Acosta, Lyrica Okano, and James Marsters. Other celebrities who attended the premiere included “The O.C.” alum Rachel Bilson.
