As the Sun Sets on the Summer of Love’s 50th Anniversary, Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick Gets Candid

Grace Slick has been sober for 20 years, but her reputation as one of San Francisco’s foremost Aquarius goddesses — who became the poster child for female-led flower power as the singer of Jefferson Airplane — remains as vibrant as ever, even as the Summer of Love winds down its 50th anniversary.

The summer of 1967 was a time of warmth and strife, drugs and war, poetry, visual art and mind-bending music, for which Airplane played a pivotal role, encouraging the growing hippie community to “feed your head,” as the band’s seminal “White Rabbit” espoused. Now 77,  Slick says there are some things she misses about that time and the years after — Quaaludes are, curiously, at the top of her list — but seems mostly content with her place in the current day, as she told Variety in a recent interview.

If LSD had a theme song, it would be “White Rabbit.” What was your best and worst acid trip?
Grace Slick: I didn’t have a worst. A lot of time with acid, you have to be in a good frame of mind and around things and people that you like, as I was fortunate to have, and I never had a freak out. Things got real strange [sometimes], and then it goes away in 12 hours or whatever. We had good acid, too — it wasn’t cut with anything and it was made well by chemists from the University of California Berkeley. We got lucky with it. And I got lucky in that it was a time in my life where I was not particularly hampered by any hideous mental existence.

There is the famous story of you wanting to dose Nixon when you got invited to the White House. What would you slip Trump to mellow him out?
Acid, because I don’t think he’d too well with that. It’s an ego-destroying thing where you are not in control. You’ve got to know what you’re doing with it. You’ve got to have somebody who is not high to make sure you don’t decide you’re a raven and fly off the roof. There are all kinds of things about it that are tricky. … We’ve got a president who is orange — everybody’s least favorite color. Bill Maher said never underestimate the stupidity of the American public, and, at this point in time, he is right. But I realized what a patriot I was when he got elected [because] it made me so sad thinking about how there were 12 or 15 guys who, now 240 years ago, started an entire country. Although they may not have practiced all their ideas — they had slaves and were talking about how all men were free — some in the Constitution are still used.  And they were wonderful ideas as far as how to treat each other and yourself. Then you get this nut-job goofball as our president, and it’s embarrassing. He shouldn’t be running a country. Guy is a mess.

Earlier this year, you used your voice to protest in a unique way, allowing Chick-Fil-A, which has previously funded organizations that are against same-sex marriage, permission to use Starship’s 1987 hit “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” in a commercial. You then gave your portion of the earnings to a LGBTQ organization. Should other artists also be exploring such nontraditional tactics?
I mostly paint now and I will encourage or not encourage people depending on who I am talking to. But also this is a period of time where I’m sitting back, which is fine. When you are older, generally, you’re a bit quieter. Rock and roll is a young expression — it’s strong, loud, and ironic. There are just things you do when you’re 25 you don’t do when you’re 70 because you look silly.

Does that suggest that it’s incumbent on millennials to do more?
My generation — and this isn’t bragging, it’s a fact — is the best public school-educated generation before or since. And I see kids saying things on television that are kind of stupid, because they aren’t getting educated. There are 95,000 kids in one class and they’re not paying attention [because] they’d rather be looking at Kim Kardashian’s latest outfit. It’s too bad because, environmentally, you can mold a fairly intelligent person. But if you don’t learn anything what are you gonna do? Look at pictures of Kim Kardashian all your life?

Many of your contemporaries, like the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, are still touring. Is there a stage show you’ve seen recently that’s impressed you?
One that I saw on TV that I thought was really well done was Madonna. I didn’t like her when she first came out, but I thought, “Man, somebody knows how to do a production.” It was fantastic! Dancing boys and explosions and shit — was all really well-staged and well-costumed. She’s not a great singer, but she’s a good performer and did a beautiful job. I also saw a program with Fleetwood Mac. They sounded good, but I couldn’t look at it because there’s all these old people singing.

Is there a drug you miss?
Quaaludes. They don’t make them anymore, and we’re lucky because we’d be off to the races with that. …  You can take Quaaludes and have a day of being silly, and you’re done. There’s no hangover, no six months of being a zombie. If Quaaludes came out again, I’d buy a big dark amber glass bottle and keep it in the refrigerator.

    Hip-hip, Hoo-Rorer 714″s!

  2. JamesG says:

In an interview with Ben Stein when he asked her which drug was the most difficult to quit Grace Slick answered “alcohol” whereupon Stein, apparently disappointed, had nothing to add.

    • Steve says:

I’ve heard an AA friend say many times that he’s used a lot of drugs, “but it was alcohol that brought me to my knees”. Oh, and I don’t know why so many people are slamming Slick for her drug use when the story says she’s been sober for twenty years.

  3. vinrand says:

Someone who is 77 years old, and on drugs for over 50 of them, including acid (real acid), says the president is a mess? Yeah, I’ll listen to your take on politics, or anything else for that matter. Why don’t you just go take a hit of acid, put a pair of headphones on and listen to the Beatles “Sgt Peppers” album backwards, and fade away. Oh yeah, and when you wake up. just take a couple ludes to get back to your baseline.
RIP Walter Becker. We’re going to miss you.

    • JR says:

      A) Because she’s right
      B) You’re a moron. Obviously being 77 did not result in intelligence or wisdom.

If you are an example of being drug-free, I have to start looking for a dealer so I don’t end up as ignorant as you.

  4. Gary Jaye says:

How nice to hear from Grace Slick. I love Grace and how beautifully she’s mellowed. I still listen to JA and JS from time to time and remain amazed at the clarity, range and power of her voice. She sang anthems like “Volunteers” that helped put Dick on that helicopter back to San Clemente. I wish we had artists doing similar work now. We need it as much as we did then. Bless you, Grace. Live long in peace.

  5. Eric says:

This is an Arts and Entertainment magazine, and why is there more political questions asked instead of musical ones? Grace and the Airplane created a lot of fine music during the period, and now is retired and does what she likes. Getting old is good fortune, and Grace made it through a wild ride.

    • Janice says:

Because Grace Slick dared say a negative word about Trump and one thing that is true of all blind cult followers is that they cannot tolerate any criticism of their Leader.

  6. Rick says:

Grace has always been cool. She has a great perspective of life and I can relate.

  7. Curly says:

Orange was Frank Sintra’s favorite color.

They make a lot of Qualudes in China these days. They trade some of those to South African fishermen for Abalone.

  8. Just another weirdo who has to put her uneducated points of view out there about the leader of this country…..BTW, he DOES lead this country…..And what gives you the right to speak for the entire country and everyone in it? He’s “orange”????? Are you still on something? Do you even know the man?

With orange, you are warm, optimistic, extroverted and often flamboyant. You are friendly, good-natured and a generally agreeable person.
You are assertive and determined rather than aggressive – having a personality color orange means you are more light-hearted and less intense than those who love red.
You thrive on human social contact and social gatherings, bringing all types together.
You get great satisfaction from helping others and they find you inspiring with your vitality and positive energy.

And last, he is way more successful than most….Does that bother you? If he is “orange”, that looks pretty darn good to me…..

    • Janice says:

      Trump is a man who’s:
      Mocked a man with disabilities.
Attacked the parents of a fallen American hero.
Belittled POWs and the war record of Sen. John McCain.
Lied about how much money he raised for veterans.
Called a former Miss Universe “disgusting” and fat, telling his Twitter followers to find her non-existent sex tape.
Accused an American-born federal judge of being unfit to do his job because of his Mexican heritage.
Likely avoided paying taxes for nearly two decades.
Called most Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals, even though that’s not remotely factual.
Lied about seeing “thousands and thousands” of Muslims celebrating in New Jersey on 9/11.
Lied about getting a letter from the NFL complaining about the debate schedule.
Tried to exploit the death of an African American woman in Chicago to say that’s why black voters will support him.
Found the “bright side” to tragedies because his poll numbers tend to go up.
Settled with the Department of Justice after his company was found guilty of racially discriminating against minorities.
Has cheated on at least one wife.
Was discovered on video admitting that he not only tried to cheat on his current wife, but he attempted to do so with another married woman.
Had his first wife publicly say that he did nothing when it came to raising their children until they were old enough to talk business.
Tweeted that women should have expected to be sexually assaulted when they mixed males and females together in the military.
Said he wants to target the families of terrorists.
Stated that he wants to ban an entire religion.
Praised a Russian president who obviously hates the U.S. and Americans.
Encouraged the Russian government to commit espionage against Americans.
Insinuated that another Republican’s wife was ugly.
Tried to implicate another Republican’s father in JFK’s assassination.
Sought out the help of former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes after he was fired following multiple allegations that he had sexually harassed women for years.
Made Breitbart’s Steve Bannon one of his top campaign people.
Had a former campaign manager abruptly resign after a report came out linking him to pro-Russian groups that were directly trying to undermine U.S. policy in eastern Europe.
      Called Carly Fiorina ugly.
Has said climate change was a hoax created by the Chinese — then denied saying it.
Was a leading conspiracy theorist when it came to the racist-driven birther conspiracies against President Obama.
Dismissed nearly eight years of accusing the president of not being an American with a less than 30 second statement where he didn’t apologize for any of it.
Tried to blame Hillary Clinton for his racism.
Re-tweeted anti-African American propaganda created by a white supremacy group.
Played dumb about knowing who former Grand Wizard of the KKK David Duke was.
Skipped a presidential debate because he was scared of a moderator.
Has, on several occasions, suggested he finds his daughter attractive.
Called a husband doing things like changing diapers and helping with the children, a man “trying to be the wife.”
Has said he wants more countries to have nuclear weapons.
Said he can’t release his tax returns because they’re currently being audited — even though the IRS said that’s a lie.
Feels he has the right to sexually assault women.
Lied, in the face of indisputable photographic evidence, about the size of his inauguration crowd.
Continues to push the unfounded conspiracy that “millions of people voted illegally” because his ego can’t handle the fact Clinton received 3 million more votes than he did.
Disgraced the CIA’s monument to fallen agents by talking about his electoral college victory.
After frequently criticizing President Obama for playing golf, has spent nearly half his weekends since being sworn into office playing golf at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
On pace to cost taxpayers more on “extracurricular” expenses during his first 365 days in office than we spent on Obama during his 2,921 days as president.
Settled a $25 million lawsuit accusing him of purposely creating a fake university to scam people out of money.
Has already broken most of his biggest campaign promises.
Fired the head of the FBI for apparently not “swearing loyalty” and doing what he wanted in regards to the on-going investigations looking into his campaign’s ties to Russians.
Then threatened the former head of the FBI just after firing him in an attempt to intimidate him from speaking out publicly.
Pushed an unfounded conspiracy against Barack Obama, accusing him of ordering unconstitutional wiretaps placed in Trump Tower — without providing a shred of evidence to back it up.
Seems to have been working with the head of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Devin Nunes, to undermine congressional investigations into his possible Russian connections.
Had said, despite promising to do so, he doesn’t plan to ever release his tax returns.
Said he didn’t know being “president” would be so hard.
Apparently needed the president of China to explain to him why dealing with North Korea is complicated.
Signed two travel bans against Muslims that were overturned as unconstitutional.
Allowed state-run Russian media to bring electronic and photographic equipment into the Oval Office — while denying entry to any U.S. press — at the request of Vladimir Putin.
Said his surrogates shouldn’t be held accountable for the dishonest or contradictory things they say.
Admitted Australia, which has universal health care, has better health care than we do, then doubled-down on those comments, yet still supports a bill that’s almost the complete opposite of their system.
Months after the election, continues to bring it up the electoral college, even hanging a large printout of it on a wall in the White House.
Didn’t mention the Jewish people once during his speech on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Blamed Democrats for the initial failure of the House of Representatives being able to pass Trumpcare — even though Republicans have a 44-seat majority.
Is now bragging about the very same jobs reports he called “fake” and “phony” prior to taking office.
Continues to call the talk about the investigations into his connections to Russia “FAKE NEWS!” even though the FBI has publicly admitted these investigations are, in fact, real.
Has the lowest approval rating for a president this early into their presidency — in history.
Admitted he lied when he publicly threatened that he might have recorded his conversations with the former head of the FBI he had just fired — in a clear attempt to intimidate James Comey into not speaking out about what the two men had discussed.
Apparently doesn’t understand what “collusion” or “obstruction” actually mean.
Called the very same health care plan he publicly celebrated and said he supports “mean.”
Launched a disgusting attack against “low I.Q” MSNBC’s Mika Brzeninski, accusing her of “bleeding badly from a face-lift” when he saw her back in January, while calling her co-host Joe Scarborough, and former U.S. congressman, “psycho.”
Has pushed us closer to WIII by using irresponsible language where he seemed to be threatening nuclear war against North Korea.
On a 17-day vacation told Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that the senator needed to get back to work.
Initially, when he spoke about violence and domestic terrorism that broke out in Charlottesville, Virginia — he refused to specifically condemn, by name, white supremacists, the KKK, or Nazis — instead saying “many sides” were to blame.
Took two days before he finally condemned these hate groups by name — only to, the very next day, walk back those comments, once again saying “both sides” were to blame. Comments that were praised by David Duke and other white supremacists who applauded Trump for also blaming the people who showed up to oppose Nazis, white nationalism, and the KKK as “part of the problem.”

BUT somehow Grace Slick is the jerk and Trump is “looks pretty good to you”. And he’s “more successful than most”. Oh yeah. So how’s that wall, Obamacare replacement, and Hillary Clinton’s jail term working out for you?

      • Ross Thorn says:

And, by the way, Serge Kovaleski – the man with disabilities – suffers from arthrogryposis, a condition which limits the movement of his joints…particularly his right arm and hand. Regardless, he is also a tenured reporter who has covered Trump for years and was trying to play “stump the chump” and got caught back-peddling.

Then Candidate Trump should not have mocked him. It was not prudent or proper. No argument there.

However, I could contend with you on many other items in your silly list adding context that would probably change the perception or debunk your claim altogether. Such as condemning him for the whole “birther” controversy. That was not a small issue. NEWS FLASH: We have a document called the Constitution which states: “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”

At the time the President takes office he must be: a natural born citizen, at least 35 years old and
an inhabitant of the United States for at least fourteen years.

My son cannot play Little League baseball without an original birth certificate (Is a certificate of live birth a birth certificate??? Not always, according to the State Department!)

So, in a society that values the Rule of Law, the debate and conversation… the request for a birth certificate… was totally justified and appropriate!

      • Ross Thorn says:

What a joke! Why is it that the formerly (or sometimes currently) drug-using, hippie, profane, promiscuous (and that is putting it mildly), liberal celebrities are now considered to be so sage? Age and popularity do not guarantee intelligence… certainly not wisdom. And, why are they who preach love, peace and tolerance simply allowed to be so hateful, rebellious and intolerant? I make no defense for President Trump – past or present – although I believe that the claims against him are greatly exaggerated or taken out of context or without consideration of context. (Text w/o context is pre-text.) But, to go along with the assertion of some that he is a fake and a fraud and a racist… I would say that people like Grace Slick are HYPOCRITES! They who live in places like Mill Valley, California and the Hamptons – some of the most affluent counties in America – are no better than Donald and Ivanka Trump. They seclude themselves in their circles of fame and fortune protected by bodyguards. I’ll stop there. I could go on for days. Grace may be Slick, but a saint she is not! And, she certainly has no right to cast stones. Instead, she ought to come to the Savior and simply pray for herself and our President.

      • gailstorm0 says:

Leaders require followers. With a few exceptions like yourself, he isn’t exceeding on that level. Further, he doesn’t seem very successful at all to me. He seems miserable, mean and for most of his life people laughed at him.

    • “just another weirdo who has to put her uneducated points of view ….” – then you launch into a rant with no evidence of education, morality, soul, tasteful aesthetic – absolutely NOTHING. Silliest of all is that you imagine that anyone will change their mind for your bull crap!

      • More successful than most? What drugs are you on? Businessman? 5 Bankruptcies. Most Presidents? Which are the ones who are most he is better than. I don’t think you are in any position to discuss Grace Slicks “Failures”.

    • Dunstan says:

Donald Drumpf (his real name) is a fraud. He is so over-extended financially in his business that he is deep in debt and unable to secure financing anywhere but overseas.

He is a racist. A friend worked on every cycle of “The Apprentice” at the highest level and confirmed this to me over a year ago. Who else but a racist would become obsessed with “birtherism” which Drumpf claimed to be able to prove but like most things he claims, was total b.s.?

He has zero comprehension of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the three branches of government or much of anything else outside his real estate bubble.

He has repeatedly cheated workers who’ve built properties for him, was found guilty of fraud in connection with “Trump University” and cheated numerous potential condo owners out of their savings on various projects in the U.S. and in Mexico.

He claims to want to put America first yet much of his clothing merchandise and that of his daughter, Marie Antoinette, is made in China or other locations. So he’s a lying hypocrite, too.

He is a narcissist, a bully (he was sent to military school for punching out a teacher), claims he attended Wharton when he all did was attend SOME courses there as an undergrad and is a serial sexual abuser.

He will never get Mexico to pay for a wall, no matter how many times he says so and Congress won’t authorize the funds for it either.

Why have so many of his appointments been forced to quit and/or been implemented in illegal acts? He claims to only pick the best people. Pretty pathetic record he has there.

There will be no repeal of replace of the Affordable Care Act because any Republican plan would put tens of millions off of any healthcare plan at all.

No president in modern history has been embroiled is so many legal actions and the Russia investigation, when completed, will see him leave office in disgrace, all the while claiming it’s the fault of “fake news.”

He’s obsessed with his popularity which is decreasing daily. He has no negotiating skills, ignores science, global warming and just about anything else that makes sense.

Trolling on and on about what traits the color orange carries with it shows how hopelessly ignorant and ill-informed you really are.

      • Janice says:

Drumpf has never been his name, true. His ancestors changed it from Drumpf to Trump back in the 1600s. But I certainly don’t object to it, and I use it sometimes myself. Payback for “Obummer” “0bama”, “Obammy”, and “Barry Soetero.” Soetero was Obama’s stepfather’s name, and he did use it for a while as a child, but had stopped doing so by age 10. So big deal. It doesn’t even make sense to use it to imply ridicule, as there’s nothing even comical about Soetero, as there is about Drumpf. But I don’t think Trump followers have a sense of humor anyway.

      • Lumpy says:

Drumpf is NOT now, or was it ever his name. One of his ancestors bore that name generations ago–since you’re an obvious fan of Hillary Clinton, I’m sure you’ll believe Snopes, and that is where the truth in this case will be found. Not MUCH truth can be found there, but this, at least is true. Where is your proof of his financial instability? Racist? Name your friend who made this claim.
There was no legal finding of guilt in the Trump U case, it was settled out of court–much like the Obama campaign’s defamation suit filed against Larry Sinclair when he wrote a book about him and Obama.
Practically ALL clothing is presently made in China. You’d have to open a factory here to have clothing made in the US. With Trump in the whitehouse, that may happen.
“…serial sexual abuser….”? Got proof? Maybe YOU could be sued for defamation of character.
Can you name any of his appointments that have been “…implemented in illegal acts…(sic)”? Can you cite the statutes that were broken?
There is no “science” behind “global warming”. Just cooked books and lies.
Economics–not science–are behind “global warming”. Govt wants more of your money, but elected officials fear not being re-elected if they jack up taxes, so they had to fabricate a story that would fool taxpayers into believing energy MUST be taxed, and it’s the taxpayers own fault. Ditto cow farts.

      • You know so much ……….blah blah blah, but then for some ignorance is bliss.

  9. Love Grace. Bright witty intellect. Courageous and says exactly what’s on her mind. She and the Airplane left so much gooooood music! Wish she would consider coming out and doing a few of the (mellower?) tunes live. Lots of fans still alive!

  10. Show me says:

Someone mentioned that Grace Slick didn’t hurt anyone. Well, her “influence” on stage and others from the sixties DID maybe unknowingly, by promoting drug use, were responsible for many deaths and bad trips by their encouragements of using drugs. They sure were not out there singing about NOT using drugs.

    • Please do your research. During the Summer of Love marijuana and LSD were the drugs of choice. Neither is addictive and neither causes overdose or harm is used in the right mindset and setting. Currently, there are many studies now showing that psychedelics can be powerfully healing tools for psychologists and mental health professionals. Might want to check the statistics on alcohol. Last I heard 90 thousand deaths a year directly related to the poisoning effects of alcohol on the nervous systems. How many 911’s is that per year?

  11. Paul Wright says:

    Spot on.
I’m ignoring the small-minded, ill-educated, outdated comments on here. They only confirm what she says.
It seems the US was more progressive 50 years ago.

  12. Steven palm says:

I was lucky enough to be at gracies

final concert before her child was born. She asked at the end for a request. 3 of us in the front shouted chauffeur blues.and she sang it.high point for a 17 year old

  13. I am 69 and turning 70 on Dec.26th I still and always will love Grace and the Airplane . I love her artwork and Jack and Jorma are awesome with their Hot Tuna , who still commit to a demanding tour schedule. I am also very impressed with the Fur Peace Ranch

  14. Janice says:

I know and like only two Jefferson Airplane songs. I don’t care about celebrities. I just happened on here out of boredom. I have always believed that it’s ridiculous to think one can either like or dislike anybody one doesn’t personally know, and one doesn’t personally know a celebrity. So I have no special liking for nor interest in Grace Slick.

That said, I’m appalled at the comments here about her appearance. It’s nasty ageism at its best. Also, to everyone who has their panties in a wad because she criticized their Dear Leader, The Trumpfenfuher: Come now, people. You are doing nothing but make it more and more obvious that you are held in thrall to a cult. Yes, that’s what it is. Nothing else can explain this continued slavish devotion to a con man who cares about nothing but himself. Trump has shown every day for the past seven months that he is supremely unqualified to run this country. He’s made it more obvious than it was before his election that he is mentally ill and incompetent. Everyone with a brain saw that before the election, and now he is confirming it. He appealed to the basest and the worst in Americans to eke out an Electoral College win.

Hell, I started typing up a list of all the ways he is a disaster, but that was going to turn into something the length of “War and Peace”. I’ll just finish by saying he was NEVER the choice of the majority of Americans, and his approval ratings certainly reflect that. I hope our country comes out of this nightmare intact. I fear for it, I truly do. And I can never forgive those, who for whatever reason, voted this monstrosity into office.

Grace Slick is a woman who, whatever her faults, and we all have them, has never done anything to hurt another person. Even if you want to believe the worst you can about her, she has hurt only herself. Trump is in the process of hurting millions. I’ll treat your petty complaints about Grace Slick seriously when she runs for President. And I don’t intent on coming back here, so save your breath.

    • Jamie says:

Funny. You say that it’s ridiculous to think one can either like or dislike anybody one doesn’t personally know…..So do you know the POTUS?

      • Janice says:

I don’t dislike Trump as a person. I dislike him as a politician. It’s the same as saying, “I don’t like Jefferson Airplane’s music” rather than personally criticizing Grace Slick.

    • Jacen says:

Yes, indeed, Janice–especially your point about the Cult of Trump. It’s very similar to China under Mao: a red banner; an obese womanizer with bad hair; the people blindingly worshipping him (literally worshipping, with prayers to him morning and night) despite all the incompetent things he did to harm their country and culture; people destroyed for disagreeing with or criticizing the leader; the leader benefitting financially from his abuse of power; various simple, insane, ignorant, or flat-out stupid sayings collected for the people to memorize and recite; and more. For years, I’ve thought that the US was heading toward becoming China. Though they nominally are Communist, it’s really more that they are Authoritarian Capitalist. And with Chairman Trump leading the way, we could be joining an oppressive axis made up of China, Russia, and ourselves.

  15. Harry Elliott says:

What is the difference between someone slipping LSD to someone without their
knowledge, even someone as unlikeable as Richard Nixon and Donald Trump
and slipping a date rape drug to a woman and then having your way with her?

I am getting so tired of Liberal/Progressives trying to claim the high ground
on moral, intellectual and cultural issues, when they are too delusional to realize
    that they’ve lost it.

    • Lumpy says:

Whoa, Janice! “…eke out an Electoral College win…”? The individual voters NEVER elected the prez, only the states themselves, through the votes of “electors” who vote according to the election results of their states. Trump won 39 states, Hillary Clinton won 11. That’s hardly “eking out” a victory.

      • Janice says:

Leaving aside the fact that The Electoral College itself is an outdated dinosaur, if 78,000 people, spread out between Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, had voted for Clinton instead of Trump, Clinton would have won. That is, indeed, eking out an Electoral College win.

  16. ASHLEY says:

So ancient drug addicts are against Trump. Why are we supposed to care?

  17. Barbara Tripp says:

    Mark 8:36

For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?

  18. Apeon LastnmUnkn says:

A bad acid trip is in Fact–Reality—it is BAD——That makes Trump a Reality.

  19. Velocitor says:

Grace Slick thinks orange is everybody’s least favorite color?

  20. Therapy says:

    Grace,

Continue your mushroom therapy. Do not engage in politics during “treatment”.

    Lather, rinse, repeat.

    Love,

    Charles

  21. Dave Samson says:

Now there’s someone we can believe a f****** acid drug bunny.where do you Democrats dig up these brilliant spokespeople that can’t remember their own name.

  22. The Truth from Ruth says:

Amazing to read the amount of organized hate posted by alt-right Trumpsters upset by Grace Slick’s views. Their attack dog mentality can’t silence one of the most interesting and vibrant women of the last 50 years. And talented. Her “White Rabbit” summed up the sixties and is still popular half a century later; will anybody be reading “The Art of the Deal” 20 years from now? And Grace Slick made her money honestly: she wrote songs and gave concerts and the public paid for them. She didn’t open phony “universities” and then have to give the millions back to the people she swindled. Viva Grace! You’ve faced down greater dragons than these teeny Trumpies who are nipping at your heels.

    • Barbara Tripp says:

Grace Slick is a sinner like everyone else … she’s nothing special in that regard. She will stand before God one day just like the rest of us either under the blood of Christ {sins forgiven} or still in her sins due to rejection of the salvation He offered her.

Born again believers aren’t impressed by the fleeting fame she enjoyed decades ago, praised by the spiritually blind in a dying world. The only thing that really matters now is where Grace spends eternity. Christians will be praying that the scales drop from her eyes before it’s too late.

      • Janice says:

This is why I’m not a Christian. In fact, it’s one (but only one of several) reasons that I’m an atheist. Grace Slick has done nothing sinful and nothing that merits any time in hell. It’s all “Live by these arbitrary man-made rules, and if you don’t, we’ll threaten you with eternal torture.” If there were a hell, I am quite sure that Donald Trump would be going straight there.

    • PrinceCharles says:

      Ruth,

You can’t separate the substance of your life from whatever bull squat you’re currently spewing. And I’m not saying that Grace is doing that…but you also can’t dismiss the fact that Grace is a “drug offender”, thereby a “criminal”.

Who are you to tell me how I interpret the data stream? Facts are not yours to manipulate. Grace is free to think what she does, and God bless her…but I am free to question her beliefs and hold them suspect against the facts.

Grace Slick allowed herself to become a Commie dupe. Please forgive me if I demure from jumping after her into Carl Marx’s nightmare.

      • The Truth from Ruth says:

Dear “Prince Charles”….As Grace Slick famously sang in a song that is still played all over the world today (Somebody to Love) “When the truth is found to be lies.” This became a clarion call for the 60s when so many things — segregation, Vietnam, sexual mores — were called into question. Now we have a President who LIES and LIES and LIES to the American public. And Grace’s words seem more appropriate than ever. She is no “commie dupe,” she is a freedom fighter and an American patriot. And one hell of a great singer!

      • Lumpy says:

Well, Janice, if Trump DOES go to hell, tell him we all said “Hi!”…

    • Janice says:

I agree. Thank you. I’m appalled at some of these comments. Trumpism is truly a cult. You can tell by the rabid way that the cult followers react when their Dear Leader is criticized. Grace Slick has more value in her little finger than Dump has in his entire body.

      • Jamie says:

“it’s ridiculous to think one can either like or dislike anybody one doesn’t personally know,”

      • PrinceCharles says:

Well, at least she’s on record as recommending less frequent sex as being more fulfilling. I guess playing the whore got old (not so) quick.

You get what you pay for. What have YOU been buying?

  23. BWAWAWA. Moonbats can’t face reality in any decade

  24. This coming from someone who needs help picking her initials out of a set of alphabet blocks.

  25. Pinky Lee says:

Well, if nothing else sister slick’s acid fried brain knows a lot about bad trips!!

  26. Frank says:

You cannot wrap your head around a liberal, especially a celebrity liberal. If you are a celebrity you are a business. Anyone with business experience knows the key to success is attracting customers not turning them away. Why would anyone turn away a customer. Liberals are simply deranged.

    • Janice says:

Actually, I live in South Carolina, but I am proud to originally be from The New York Metropolitan Area, AKA The Place Where People Have Brains. And I threatened no violence. I just am amused at the way people will say things online that they don’t have the guts to say in person.

    • Janice says:

I’m a liberal. So is everyone I know. Care to repeat that in person?

  27. Lhayes says:

Another washed up “entertainer” who thinks their opinion maters. I will say this, if anyone knows what a acid trip is like, it would be grace.

  28. Barbara Tripp says:

Old hippies never die … they just sink slowly into dementia while imagining they’re still relevant. Not a pretty picture. Embarrassing, in fact.

  29. richard felterflapp says:

    grace…you are a has been.
your thoughts, opinion, etc. mean nothing.

    • Janice says:

Honestly. This is appalling. Not just you, but many others. She was an entertainer. Variety deals with entertainment. So they interviewed her. No doubt they asked her for the interview and not the other way around. It must be Variety who thinks that people care about her thoughts and opinions. If you don’t care, then don’t read it. I am appalled at the hatred being shown to this woman in these comments. She has done nothing wrong and hurt nobody in her life. What is everyone’s problem? And further, the comments on her appearance are highly offensive and ageist. She is 77 years old. She looks no worse than my grandparents did at 77. What does her appearance matter anyway? No matter what she looks like, she is still the same person she was when she looked great.

  30. vanityofvanitys says:

    Ok,grace,cool.
I’m also guessing you must have had a bad acid trip when you guys fell for “We Built this City…” ?

  31. Buzz says:

I have a friend who owned a recording studio in LA for a number of years. He recorded all of the top musicians and entertainers from the 1950s-1980’s. Grace Slick was one of them. He is now retired and in his living room is a couch that was in the recording studio. Slick overdosed on that couch. How pathetic.

  32. Dan Luke says:

Slick is a drugged out old bag. She now looks like 40 miles of bad road.

  33. Steve says:

You kinda think the acid trips have affected her judgement?

  34. Stephen Giorgis says:

Good Lord, why don’t any of these “Interviewers” follow up with specific questions to strengthen the person’s view point?
It’s a cheap, drive by shot at a person when you state an opinion, and don’t explain why.

  35. Lumpy says:

Why did you not show a current photo? Her past affection for acid likely explains her current appearance, hence her 1967 glam shot from a concert appears here. I’m glad she’s of our generation, and represents “…the best public school-educated generation before or since. And I see kids saying things on television that are kind of stupid..” and then proves her educational superiority by observing of the nation’s founding fathers: “…Although they may not have practiced all their ideas — they had slaves and were talking about how all men were free — some in the Constitution are still used…”. Still used.

  36. she has always been a miserable soul. Seems like all the people against trump were never good people to begin with. None of them are thinking with there brains just there emotions. sick liberals

    • Janice says:

Stuff your hatred. There’s nothing “sick” about Grace Slick or liberals. There’s plenty sick about conservatism, as current events are showing.

  37. Grace Slick is still alive? Good for her.

  38. John C says:

Sounds to me like she is still on something. She is talking nonsense.

  39. Linda says:

All I want is a comment from someone whose life is surrounded by drugs and alcohol. I prefer a person who doesn’t do drugs, alcohol or tobacco. Oh, wait! could that be DJT?

    • Janice says:

If DJT is an example, then I prefer people who do drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. I also prefer people who are not uptight judgmental prudes.

      • dee says:

        Good one, Janice.

Trump sexually assaulting women, paying $25 mill to victims of Trump “University”, Trump complimenting the white supremacists, Trump lying so many times & the evidence is him on video – none of that means anything to Trumpers. Of course, if a Democrat had done anything Trump has done, that Democratic President would be facing impeachment.

  40. Travln Texan says:

but…if President Trump were just Donald J Trump private citizen…old Grace would be in there rubbing elbows and drinking his champagne.

  41. gkn says:

    Fun interview. Great story!

  42. Pat MaGroyn says:

The ’60’s…The decade that ruined America

  43. Jerry Brickley says:

I would not have expected so many pro-Trump comments from a VARIETY audience…looks like a shoo-in for 2020.

    • Janice says:

Ha ha right. At the rate he’s going, there will be no country in 2020. He’s not going to make it through his first term anyway. Did you see how he’s “depressed” because this “wasn’t what he signed up for?” LOL.

  44. Jerry Brickley says:

If you want a realy bad acid trip, post a current picture of Grace Slick…yech!

  45. Always source mental patients opinions. This is why you are losers.

  46. wookie says:

How much more of a worthless opinion is there ?

  47. LillyD says:

Nice old picture of Grace- she’s been looking like a bad trip for a while now. Orange would be an improvement.

  48. William Thomason says:

    Grace would certainly know.

  49. Doc Mac says:

A bad acid trip is when things that are not real and completely from your imagination scare you into until you are irrational. Yeah, she pegged it; that’s pretty much what is happen to the Left with Trump.
