Goldenvoice Parts Ways With FYF Fest’s Sean Carlson

Goldenvoice has parted company with FYF Fest founder Sean Carlson, according to an internal email obtained by Variety. No reason for the departure is indicated in the email.

“Effective immediately, Goldenvoice has ended its relationship with Sean Carlson,” the email from Goldenvoice CEO Paul Tollett reads.  “We’re evaluating our path forward as it relates to FYF Fest.  Please have your agents direct all matters regarding Coachella booking directly to me.”

AEG, Goldenvoice and Carlson either had not responded to Variety’s request for comment or had not commented at press time.

The festival, which is produced in partnership with Coachella founder Goldenvoice and AEG, has grown from small beginnings to become of major concert event with highly in-demand performers: The 2017 edition featured Frank Ocean, Missy Elliott, Bjork, Nine Inch Nails, A Tribe Called Quest and Solange, among dozens, with a surprise appearance from Brad Pitt.

FYF Fest began in 2004 — when Carlson was just 18 years old — as a group of concerts in several Echo Park venues featuring 2-3 dozen punk-leaning bands and several comedians; for the past three years it has been held , it has grown into a formidable event, held in the city’s sprawling Exposition Park.

Carlson grew up in Torrance, Calif., outside of Los Angeles and worked as a summer intern at punk-leaning label Epitaph Records during high school. After graduation he founded a fanzine and followed some friends’ bands on tour, and began organizing concerts on his return. He launched the first FYF (then known as the “F— Yeah Fest”) at the Echo in Los Angeles.

Variety will have more on this situation as it develops.
