Dynamo and Spiral Co-Producing ‘Falco,’ Re-versioning Germany’s ‘The Last Cop’

Red Arrow Int’l Sold Remake Rights; Ernesto Contreras directs

German high-concept crime series “The Last Cop” (“Der Letzte Bulle”) is getting a Spanish-language version. Re-titled “Falco,” the new series kicked off principal photography in Mexico on Monday, Nov 20. Mexican helmer-scribe Ernesto Contreras, renowned for his Sundance Film Fest award-winning films “I Dream in Another Language” and “Blue Eyelids,” will direct and showrun the series.

Red Arrow Int’l, a ProSiebenSat 1Media company, licensed the remake rights to Latin American powerhouse shingle Dynamo and Miami-based content distribution company, Spiral Int’l.

“Falco” begins in the year 1994 where Detective Alex Falco, happily married with a newborn child, is shot in the head while out in the field. He ends up in a coma only to regain consciousness in 2018, opening his eyes to a vastly unfamiliar world.

Red Arrow International has sold the scripted format of “The Last Cop” around the world. Winner of Best Scripted Format at the 2017 International Format Awards at MipTV, the series has been adapted by TF1 in France where it aired five seasons; Russia, the Czech Republic, Estonia as well as Japan’s Nippon TV and Hulu, which co-produced two seasons and a theatrical spinoff version.

The 15-hour Spanish-language adaptation will launch with a feature-length pilot. Red Arrow Int’l will distribute the Latin American production of “Falco” worldwide.

“‘Falco’ is a powerful and poignant story about a detective’s determination to hunt down his assailant, find his family, and get his life back on track,” said Henrik Pabst, at Red Arrow International.

He added: “Ernesto Contreras is a master filmmaker and we could not be more thrilled to be working with Dynamo and Spiral International to see ‘Falco’ brought to life in Spanish.”

Diego Ramírez Schrempp, a partner at Dynamo, commented: “When adapting the scripts, we were careful in keeping the unique strength of the original series, while adding a rich Latin American context and texture to the story and characters. I have no doubt that ‘Falco’ will be another powerful Dynamo product, very much in line with our international premium content strategy.”

“’Falco’ will be an exciting cinematic experience across 15 episodes, where we will establish an expressive and stylized language, including the nostalgic element of the nineties (when Falco practically ceases to exist), and where the primary objective will be to create a special visual, audio and emotional universe to tell our story,” said Contreras who has a total of 19 festival wins, nine nominations, and is represented by Valor Entertainment and The Paradigm Agency.

Dynamo recently opened an office in Mexico City in a bid to further expand its operations, which it has consolidated in its home base in Colombia as well as in Spain and New York. Company formed a joint venture in early November with Mexican producer Juan Uruchurtu who runs the Dynamo Mexico office. He has line-produced or produced such projects as the Story House-Netflix series “El Chapo,” of which Contreras directed some episodes, comedy “El Acorazado,” HBO’s “Sr Avila,” and Clarovideo’s “La Hermandad.”

Based out of Bogotá, Dynamo has produced such movie hits as “The Hidden Face” and “Undertow” and provided production services to such high-profile projects as Netflix’s “Narcos” and Tom Cruise-starrer “American Made.”

Led by Zasha Robles, Spiral Int’l is a content distribution company that focuses on distribution and brand development within the Americas. Spiral is a subsidiary of Etcetera Group with regional offices in the U.S., Portugal, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Venezuela, and Brazil. With offices in Munich, London, New York and Hong Kong, Red Arrow International distributes scripted, factual and formatted shows to over 200 territories worldwide. Recent international highlights include: “Bosch” (Amazon) and “Married at First Sight” (A&E/FYI).
