Busan: ‘Taxi Driver’ Hailed as Best Film at Bu-il Awards

Jang Hoon’s “A Taxi Driver” won the best film prize at the 26th Bu-il Film Awards, a local film awards held annually during the Busan Film Festival. The historical drama also earned lead actor Song Kang-ho (“Snowpiercer”) the best actor award. Having earned $84.75 million from 12.2 million admissions during its theatrical run, “Taxi Driver” is currently the year’s top-grossing movie in Korea.

Kim Sung-soo won best director for his hardboiled crime action drama “Asura: The City of Madness.”

Veteran actress Youn Yuh-jung (“Hill of Freedom”) took the best actress prize for “The Bacchus Lady.” Youn won the best new actress prize for her debut performance in “Woman of Fire” in 1971.

Lee Joon-ik (“The Throne”), who won best director last year for black-and-white period drama “Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet,” saw his latest, “Anarchist From Colony,” take home several trophies including best screenplay for Hwang Seong-gu, and best new actress for Choi Hee-seo.

Best supporting actor awards went to Kim Hee-won for “The Merciless,” and to Kim Su-an for “The Battleship Island.” “Island” also won best production design for Lee Hoo-kyoung.

Queer dramas “Our Love Story” and “Jane” took trophies home. “Our Love Story” director Lee Hyun-ju won the best new director award, while “Jane” won best new actor for Koo Kyo-hwan and best music direction.

Cannes’ Midnight Screening entry “The Villainess” won best cinematography for Park Jeong-hoon.

The Yu Hyun-mok award, a special prize named after the legendary Korean filmmaker, was dedicated to the late BIFF executive programmer Kim Ji-seok. BIFF chairman Kim Dong-ho received the award on Kim’s behalf.

“Thank you very much for presenting such a meaningful prize to the deceased,” said Kim. “We all feel that no one can fill the void that he left.”
