Germany’s Constantin Film to produce, as on original six-movie franchise

The “Resident Evil” movie franchise has not ended after all.

Details such as the reboot director, stars, and how the reboot would fit into the franchise narrative are being kept under wraps. But Martin Moszkowicz, chairman of the board at Constantin Film, did confirm to Variety at the Cannes Film Festival that a reboot is in development at the giant German production company, which owns rights to the franchise and has produced all of its installments.

‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’ Trailer: Milla Jovovich Makes Her Last Stand

The franchise was set to end with this year’s “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,” which grossed $312 million worldwide after its January release, including an eye-popping $160 million in China alone.  Sony helped sow the seeds of success by securing a release for “Resident Evil: Afterlife” and “Resident Evil: Extinction” in China.

Based on the Capcom video game, the series launched in 2002 with Paul W.S. Anderson directing, and Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, Bernd Eichinger, and Samuel Hadida producing the first of a six-movie series. The “Resident Evil” movie franchise has earned $1.2 billion worldwide to date, making it Europe’s most successful independent horror-genre movie franchise in history and the highest-grossing film series to be based on a video game.

“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,” was again directed by Anderson and produced by Bolt with Hadida and Constantin’s Robert Kluizer, and exec produced by Moszkowicz.

Distributed by Screen Gems in the U.S., all six “Resident Evils” have starred Milla Jovovich. Anderson has written all six of the installments and directed four. His involvement on a reboot is open to question, however, as he prepares “Monster Hunter,” again inspired by a video game from Japan’s Capcom, which is set to be brought to the market in late 2017 or early 2018.

Well it couldn’t be worse than the Paul WS Anderson series. Maybe the reboot will actually resemble the games in some form…

  2. RE lover says:

So true what many have said about the RE movies. They for the most part are very loosely based on the games, however I for one have really enjoyed all of them and am looking forward to a possible reboot. It would be killer to see one that’s more mirror image to the games, the games are fantastic and i for one was an avid gamer in 1994 when i was standing outside of Hastings all night long just waiting for the release of RE-1. And then scscaring the hell out of my self as i played hour after hour in the dark, and developing one hell of a case of carpel tunnel syndrome and a massive addiction to caffeine. So all in all the movies do not follow the games very closely but its an awesome story in its own. But id still love to see a reboot that follows the games hit for hit. I look forward to that if they truly do a reboot. So all you nay sayers chill out, its a killer story line in its own right its just not the game.

Good grief i hate autocorrect that’s supposed to be *1996 and scaring the hell out of myself. Trying too do comments on a cell phone can be a pain in the butt. LMAO

  3. Void says:

First off! If they are rebooting The Resident Evil Live Action Movie Series, i do not want Paul Anderson,Mila Jovovich or any other actor from the previous Irrelevant Non-Canon Disaster of Paul Andersons Shitty Resident Evil Movies!! We need a fresh Reboot! A Clean Slate!! And this Reboot needs to follow the exact canon story of every game in the Resident Evil Video Game Timeline! No more Fucking Alice! Only Original Characters from the actual game series plot as well as the 3 Canon Resident Evil CG Animated Movies Degeneration,Damnation,& Vendetta!
We also need to see all the Creatures(B.O.W.S)and their stories and how they were created.
I Also Noticed in The Shitty Paul Anderson Movie Series, That He Knew absolutely Nothing about all the Different Viruses and Parasites in the Actual Game Series Plot! All he ever Talked about was the T-Virus & Briefly the Las Plagas, but he Misinterpreted everything from the games! The Reboot series needs to Cover everything! Progenitor Virus, T-Virus, G-Virus, T-Veronica Virus,T+G Virus, NE-a Type Parasite(Nemesis Parasite), Las Plagas, Type-2 Plagas, Uroboros Virus, T-Abyss Virus, T-Phobos & Mutamycete(as well as its Cellular Waste “Mold”). We also need to have every single Corporation & Organization from the original Game Series Plot, Umbrella, Neo Umbrella, Tricell, Wil-Pharma, Tentsu, H.C.F. “Hive-Host Capture Force (Wesker’s organization), “Los Illuminados” (Cult from RE4) “The Family” (Fraternity from RE6), As well as all the important Families, The Spencers (Pre RE0), The Trevors (Pre RE0), The Marcus Family (Pre RE0), The Ashfords (Pre RE0), The Wesker Children “Project W” (Pre RE0), The Saddlers (Pre RE0), The Salazars (Pre RE0), The Simmons (Pre RE0-RE6), The Baker Family (Pre RE7), and don’t forget all the Hero organizations from the canon Video Game Timeline, S.T.A.R.S (Special Tactics And Rescue Squad), BSAA(Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) & TerraSave! This Resident Evil Movie Reboot needs to be made by true fans of the the Resident Evil Video Games, who know every single detail about the entire story, and be made for fans that play the games and know about the entires game series plot!
If they are gonna Reboot this Live Action just to fuck it all up again then i urge them not to even bother! This is a perfect opportunity for the fans of the games to demand a proper adaption to the Big Screen! They better learn from their mistakes this time!

  4. Mr. Ryan says:

My recommendation (like anyone really gives a crap, but whatever) would be to first, let the initial 6 ridiculously awful RE movies fade away and be completely forgotten. Let’s make a collective effort at rounding up all copies of each movie and launching them into space. Second, focus on the script and follow along with the vibe of the original games (RE 1-3). Not super high flying, cheap action, but more mystery and horror. Third, make sure you get GOOD actors, not super models who fly around on wires with guns. The direction the latest RE game (RE7) took is same direction the movie series should have taken in the first place, but of course Hollywood got in the way and it ended up being garbage barely suited for the SciFi channel. Just…do it the right way this time around, please.

    • Tyler says:

i actually respect andersons desision for the badass actresses i wish that (not only this movie but all other video game movies in general) it kept its ties too the games and not just a movie

  5. RE Fan Forever says:

Resident Evil movies with Milla Jovovich are going to be really hard to reboot because she nailed it and Anderson nailed the story line. It makes me sad that the franchise is over because I never wanted it to end because they were so good but they couldn’t have ended it any better than they did. I think instead of a reboot, Anderson should do a side story with either Chris Redfield, Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, or Jill Valentine because it shows them briefly in the movies but I think it would really work if one of them became the main character and had their own movie franchise.

    • Mr. Ryan says:

What is wrong with you lol? Have you ever played any of the original RE games (1-3)? I would equate the entire RE movie series to hot garbage that should have been released straight to the Sci-Fi TV channel or a train wreck that just kept on going for 15 years. It’s absolutely incredible that it has made as much money as it has. In fact, I would say that the RE series has set the record for being the most successful cinema blunder/miracle child. I have never seen or heard of anything like it. It’s so unfathomable that it almost makes you want to second guess your humanity.

      • RE Fan Forever says:

I have played all the resident evil video games and if the movies had closely followed them, they would have been confusing and certainly true garbage. What Anderson did was take a video game that has way too much going on to follow and simplified it to make sense. If he had closely followed the games then the movies would have not been a success and because he didn’t, they were which the numbers clearly show and on top of that any movie that has been based on a video game has failed horribly and resident evil is the only one to ever do well and there’s a reason for it. To each their own but the franchise went on for as long as it did for a reason and that’s because there were really good and clearly I’m not the only one who thought so because they made six parts and a whole lot of money.

  6. Dr_Hyde says:

If it’s going to closely follow the games and be a pure horror-action film (note the “horror” element preceding “action” there), then I’m all for it, because these movies became intolerable after Apocalypse – it’s truly a miracle they squeezed out FOUR more films after that. If it’s going to be the same old shindig then, like an average zombie, these movies need to be shot in the head and put down for good.

  7. Red Man says:

At least give us time to WANT a reboot (not that anyone really wanted this film franchise in the first place). What’s a reboot gonna do without the nostalgia factor? I can only imagine what transpired at the final day of shooting for “The Final Chapter”:

“Alright, that’s a wrap. Good job everyone. Come back Monday bright and early so we can start on the reboot.”

Rebooting it so soon kinda spits in the face of the current franchise before it even finishes.

    • After Apocalypse eh? I assumed they would all be terrible after the first one and haven’t watched any of the movies since. I’m not really into horror/action anyway, but I DO love me some Milla! Maybe I’ll watch the second one and see if I can stand it.

As for the reboot, yes, it’s going to be hard to follow Milla’s portrayal, I’m guessing they will put in a male lead this time and add some busty co-stars for sex appeal. Most of the RE games have guys as the main, right?

      • Mr. Ryan says:

WARNING: Do not watch any of the RE movies past the first one. That’s 1-2 hours of your life just wasted. I would argue that watching Sharknado would be time better spent.

I wouldn’t say “most” of the RE games had males as the main character. There has been a pretty even split between main character gender. Jill Valentine was one of the main characters for a while. Her and Lara Croft were created around the same time. That was the age of gender equality in gaming.

  8. Benedictus says:

Only if it hooks into the actual games, like the CG movies. Otherwise, F NO!

  9. Billy says:

I enjoyed some of these movies. But I’d love to see a Reboot. Follow the the original cast from the games

  10. 17tauri says:

These films weren’t actually based on the games. M.Jo had a self-serving, self-inserted character, Anderson pandered to her needs, because they’re married. GOOD, main characters were used as fodder, and background noise, and neither one of them were concerned about doing anything for the fans. These particular Resident Evil films are garbage. It’s just too bad that Capcom allowed it to continue for as long as they did.

  11. John Shutt says:

Never was a fan of these movies so I could a give a damn

  12. Kurt says:

“Based on the Capcom video game, the series launched in 2002”

LOOSELY based on the Capcom video game

  13. Frank says:

I’m not against it at the moment. If they want to milk the brand at least give me something like the games.

ACTUALLY make it like the (first) games this time around. Present an entirely different product – horror set in tight spaces instead of globe-trotting CGI action fest. It will catch a market these movies missed.

  14. Kim says:

Good, this series needed a reboot years ago. Hopefully it will be rebooted with a talanted director/writer and starring other people than his wife.

Wesker, Leon, Ada and Jill were the only acceptable characters over the span of 6 films.

  15. Bowtothesystemslave says:

    MILK IT! MILK IT MOARRRR!

  16. Leon says:

Hris redfield is the star not some chick whose married to the director. Better be R and male lead. Or whats the darn point

    • ket says:

      Actually….
      RE1: Chris and Jill
      RE2: Leon and Claire
      RE3: Jill
      RE4: Leon
      RE5: Chris and Sheva
RE6: Leon Helena, Chris, Piers, Jacob, Sherry, Ada
      RE7: Ethan

So like, Chris is a lead in only 3 out of 7 numbered games, and 5 games have a female lead or co-lead. Heck, he doesn’t even have his own game. He’s in no way the “star” of the series, and in no way does it have to be a male lead.

      • Never wanted to know says:

Yes Kim youre right. I would like to see a proper Chris red field leading Resident Evil then some self serving Anderson and jovvivch flick that pretty much killed all the stars team in the 2nd movie as a joke cause they wanted to “not be like the video game” which for me killed the movie. Alice is a very ok Heroine but her presence as the lead in these films was extremely frustrating. As Someone who played the very original on the day it was released all I have to say is yes CHRIS REDFIELD iS THE MAIN Guy. Hands down. They want to do it right they use that first game as their bible.

      • Kim says:

I belive he ment he would rather see a RE movie with Chrid Redfield, not “Alice” who isn’t in the games and who is played by a chick married to the director. Less nepotism and more connection to the games please.

      • Turtle says:

There is no one main character of the series, however Chris is the most reoccurring hero in the series. He also is one of the main leads in both Code Veronica (which was supposed to Resident Evil 3 but it couldn’t be because of a deal with Sony) as well as Revelations. Chris also makes an appearance in Resident Evil 7, and is the representative of the series in both Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as well as Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. He also was the poster boy in the 3DS spin-off The Mercenaries 3D. He is also the only one of the main heroes who Albert Wesker (the main villain) considers a threat to him. There is no one lead character, but if you’re going to say there’s a “star”, it would be Chris Redfield.

Also, to be fair, Resident Evil 5 is by all means Chris’s game, Sheva was just tacked on in the partner role to avoid racism allegations.

  17. Alex Meyer says:

All the movies have been despised; I doubt this reboot will make things better.

  18. Jim says:

LOL…so the last one, called “The Final Chapter” just came out 4 months ago and they are already talking about rebooting it? Pathetic. Unfortunately, thanks to the overseas market, we get stuck with rebooted garbage like this. The most recent one grossed a paltry $26.8 million domestically, but grossed decent overseas. Can they just give it an overseas release and spare the wasting of movie screen in the U.S.? Haha.

    • jjit says:

thanks to piracy, because many years ago, chinese people do not have money to go to the movie theaters
and piracy is the only choice to watch movie and these franchises are deeply rooted in young chinese now
just like Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle), because piracy, Stephen Chow’s old movies are deeply rooted in young chinese
especially one of his old movies “A Chinese Odyssey” make him a household name in china
so when the movie “A Chinese Odyssey” re-released in movie theaters, it make a huge box office, even for a very old movie that first released in 1994
a lot of chinese people said that in the past, they do not have the money, now it re-released, it’s time to repay the gratitude to Stephen Chow

    • Dr. Greenthumb says:

Your right that the non-US markets have been responsible for propping up garbage series like this and XXX in recent times, but you’ve got to imagine it’s some form of revenge for the endless stream of Adam Sandler/Kevin James/Melissa McCarthy type ‘comedy’ garbage inflicted on our screens over the years because they’ve been propped up almost exclusively by the US market. Eye for an eye and all that….

  19. cadavra says:

Amy Pascal may be gone, but the “rebooting” of still-current franchises goes on. How pathetic.
