Venice: William Friedkin on Shooting a Real Exorcism: ‘It Was Terrifying!’

When William Friedkin shot “The Exorcist” in 1973, he had never seen an exorcism, though even at the time he believed in the power of this rite. Decades later, the U.S. director came full circle when he was able to film one close up — involving violent thrashing, foaming at the mouth and screaming — thanks to Father Gabriele Amorth, who performed exorcisms for the Vatican’s Rome Diocese. The result is documentary “The Devil and Father Amorth,” which screened at the Venice Film Festival. Friedkin spoke to Variety about the experience.

How did you and Father Amorth connect?

I was familiar with his books, four or five of which are translated into English. And I knew that he was kindly disposed towards “The Exorcist” movie, even though he had said the special effects were over the top. He felt that it helped people to understand his work. I had never tried to meet him; I never thought I could. But I was in Lucca [Italy] a year or so ago…and someone casually mentioned that Lucca was about a half-hour drive to Pisa…where there was an airport where I could catch a one-hour flight to Rome. Something clicked, and through a friend I was able to write Father Amorth. Two days later he wrote me back, and said he would meet me.

So it was your idea?

Yes. This idea just popped onto my head. I call it providential. I had an inner voice that said to me, “I wonder if I could meet Father Amorth?”

It’s a known fact that Amorth was a fan of “The Exorcist.” It’s really so wonderful that in that film you had been able to capture something that resonated for him, even without doing that much research into the specifics of what he did.

There is no research; the only research is his books. In the United States in the 20th century, there were two reported cases of possession, as far as Mr. Blatty [who wrote the novel “The Exorcist”] and I could tell. There were only two cases that had any substantial writing about them in the United States….The church doesn’t say a lot about this. They don’t try to publicize it at all. They are not promoting it. I doubt that they will even have a position about my film [this latest one]. They never comment about these things. I doubt that they would have given me permission to do what I did. He gave me permission, and he operated quite independently from church procedure and was openly critical of the Vatican.

The amazing thing is that you were able to get access to a real exorcism so easily.

I was shocked. I had no idea that I would ever be able to even meet with him. I did know how busy he was. He was doing exorcisms all day every day right up until he went into the hospital and then died [in September 2016].

Why do you think you got the access?

I think I came along at a time when he wanted people to become aware of this work because he wanted the Vatican to train more exorcists. He believed that I had enough cachet to take his story…that I would be able to bring it to the public by way of a film.

Tell me about the shoot.

I had to shoot it alone, obviously. The conditions were that I come along with no crew and no lights. So I used a Sony still camera that shot high-definition video. I had only that camera running and I was about two feet away from them, probably even closer.

What was the experience of witnessing a real exorcism so close up like?

It was terrifying. I went from being afraid of what could happen to feeling a great deal of empathy with this woman’s pain and suffering, which is obvious in the film.

As I understand it, Amorth had been doing exorcisms on her for some time.

The one that I filmed was her ninth, and she was having one a month.

You have subsequently consulted with scientists in the U.S. about what you witnessed and filmed. What did they say?

I consulted with neurologists, brain surgeons, some of the best in the United States. The brain surgeons had no idea what her affliction was and none of them would recommend an operation. They believe that everything originates in the brain but — and they say this in the film — they have never seen anything quite like these symptoms….Then the psychiatrists…all described how psychiatry now recognizes demonic possession. It’s called dissociative identity disorder/demonic possession. And if a patient comes in and says they are possessed by a demon or a devil, they don’t tell them that they are not….They do whatever psychiatric treatment they think is necessary, including medication. And they bring an exorcist in.

We Catholics do not worship Mary, human beings or food imaged like God, Jesus or Mary. We pray to ask them to advocate for us. It’s like asking your mother to talk to your father about what you need. We merely ask someone who is closer to Him than we are, including our saints. We don’t worship them. We only worship God. We believe that through our holy sacraments, we ask for forgiveness from God. I don’t understand the hate for a religion that Jesus Christ Himself established when He said to Peter, the first pope, “Upon this rock (Peter) I build my church”. That’s all I need as proof. Those were Jesus Christ’s words. And before you get your vitriol on, yes there are bad priests as there are bad people everywhere. Don’t forget that Satan’s greatest victories are the corruption of the most holy. Not all succumb to those sins. Just as we can’t vilify all of any religion of being evil doers, we can’t condemn all Catholic priests. One more thing about the silly talk about statues…they are like photographs we have at home reminding us of those we love. We don’t worship them either. Unlike Mormons who consider the crucifix and stained glass windows to be highly offensive, Christians do not. Don’t pick and choose. Learn the entire truth before you make your assumptions. And for the person taking about Baptism, all Christian religions perform baptisms. St. John the Baptist baptized Jesus. Just as in real life, you have to be open to learn all sides before you can make a real decision that’s truthful

Boy, this article brought out every kook on the planet. People still believe this hokum in the 21st century.

    • Dude says:

How did your consciousness get into your brain? Are you a materialist of the 20th century…because in the 21st, materialism is losing its foothold as we learn more about reality. This person may be mentally ill, or their consciousness signal is being manipulated. What of people waking from comas speaking another language? What of brain dead NDEs? What of remote viewing? Some of it is hokum…some of it is in need of study and not armchair declarations used as a psychological crutch to simplify a complex reality.

Believe me The Devil is Real…

I was was relocated to Jakarta to work on a huge I.T. Bank Project. The company I work for hires an Australian Professor for a Weeks Seminar! Basically it’s about the Do’s and Don’ts living in Indonesia. They paid him $30K USD. During the week He Brought this issue to our Attention. I crack a Joke about the Spooks and the devil, everyone was laughing but He wasn’t and said to us, Before any of you leave this Country you will have an experience. That Project was 2 years long.

To Practice the Black Arts in the largest Muslim county or any other Muslim County is Death, There is no Court for this, Men show up at your home and take you out on the street and remove your head. Then they leave you in the Street as a Warning to all. That’s how serious this issue is.

The Team consisted of 5 Americans with wives and Kids. Everyone had a Totally Unbelievable experiences. Me and my Singapore Airline girl friend Experienced one of them together. At the time I didn’t think she aware of what was happening. When she was finally turned loose, she raised up in Bed, pointed her finger at me and said in that English accent, You been F-N another woman..!!!! I assured her that happened long before I met her. Next day she went through my Apartment looking for the Mojo Bags they place when they come to you home, or have your servants to do this.. All were removed. I learned never give a business card and when your out take your empty glass to the bar, put it with the others and shuffle your glass around with the others. All they need is Something you touch or Something you own and never Ever give them a Picture.

Looking back at the Seminar, the statement the learned Professor issued, I must admit, The Man was right on and I don’t crack Jokes anymore about this.

The devil is Alive and Well and so is The Almighty God..!! If you don’t think so it’s only because you’ve not Met Lucifer…. YET….!!!

  14. Steve says:

Marshall mcluhan would refer to much of this kind of junk media coverage as tribal. It is a former of reality television. And it is tribal not only in the fact it is the opposite of print media but also in its primal and superstitious content.

It is a gift for right wing news who seem to be addicted to pseudo spiritual and pseudo religious garbage like this. I have great respect for Friedkin as an artist and seeker of truth. Matt Drudge and others like him who use such stories to further an agenda and make money off of ignorance -not so much.

The kooks seem obsessed with pseudo science, the supernatural and with exorcisms in particular.

    God help us all.

  15. Donna Hill says:

I witnessed 2 exorcisms on a Thursday afternoon where nearly 300 people gathered for a routine weekly church meeting in a large city in East Africa in 2006. The minister was a converted “Imam” to Christian and was the most powerful preacher I’d ever heard. He asked for people who needed help to come forward and maybe 50 went up there. I was able to sneak up on the side, unseen, and watch. He was working on one demon which was screaming, and then another one. Because of the crowd, I could not see much, but it was not necessary in order to hear the horrific sounds. Possession seems more common in these areas where communicating with dead ancestors and certain rituals are common.

      • Donna Hill says:

I get you. I’m all for that, but it was my anecdote. I was there and certainly nothing to be gained by anyone participating. I’ve been threatened when drawing blood from psych patients strapped down x4 and told how I was going to be cut open and my guts spread all over the street. I’ve seen mental illness and possession . BTW, I was 18 when that guy snarled at me. I matured many years ago.

  16. sosrcountry says:

Being Catholic I asked.our Priest if he had been trained to perform an exorcism, he said yes. I then asked had he ever performed one.

He said no and he never wanted to be called on to perform one! To me he sounded very fearful of the prospect of having to do one in the future.

  17. justme says:

  18. arp2169 says:

I wonder how long it will be until we start seeing anti-exorcism demonstrations in the streets.

  19. Andrew says:

The people in this comment section are insane. It use to be that before a priest would even consider a exorcism all other possibilities must be ruled out. That would include mental illness diagnosis and prognosis. Exorcism, at least before society lost it’s mind, would be a extreme last resort. Reading the comments though, it sounds like everybody is possessed and every one needs an exorcism.

    • L Sotka says:

Maybe so, Andrew. But what you are calling extreme is actually not. If I was casting out a demon (and I have successfully before) I would speak to the demon, not the person, and demand that it leaves in the Name of Jesus. Why should this be the last, and not the first plan of action. What is there to be afraid of? As I see it, looking foolish if it’s not a demon. I also speak from experience when I say that kept me from speaking Jesus’s Name in faith for many years. Also, demons squeal like a stuck pig at the Name of Jesus and don’t, or can’t hang around for more.

    • Donna Hill says:

I have researched demon possession as long ago as 1972 and then again in 2009 because of an illness of a friend in Africa. I’m no priest, M.D., or PhD, but I believed my friend to have either schizoaffective disorder or sequels from multiple bouts of malaria. Nevertheless, I felt there was really good advice online on how to differentiate between demonic activity and mental/neurologic disorders. It definitely needs careful diagnosis.

  20. Dissociative Identity Disorder has nothing, zero, nada, to do with demonic possession. DID is a coping defense against severe abuse and is easily treated. Demonic possession is when a nonhuman entity, a spiritual parasite moves in (the body) with a person. You can not treat DID with an exorcism nor can you exercise a demon with therapy. Maybe before you write an article you should understand what you are talking about first.

  21. Keter Malkut says:

A true deliverance from demons does not keep recurring each month! The LORD Jesus rules over demons and He is not a temporary fix – demons are terrified of Him and anyone in His Name who identify as being ONE with Him, which is NOT acceptable in roman catholicism.

Read Walter Veith’s testimony on youtube for an experience of someone who was catholic and got an “exorcism” for his son. It returned with vehemence because it was a deception.

  22. saa5of5 says:

I don’t really believe what this guy is saying. Anyway, a good exorcist would not 1) seek to be “understood” and 2) work with anyone on medication. Demonic possession is not in the brain! Some scientists believe “religion” is something “bad” they would like to identify so that they can remove in the brain. But we are fascinated, aren’t we? On the other side of this very real evil oppression and sometimes possession is a God who permits it who happens to love us more than we love ourselves.

  23. Josaphat Watch says:

Nice to see something relevant come from Hollywood.

I think this is a VERY common affliction today.

    • Keter Malkut says:

It has been around forever in terms of human existence – that is why The LORD told us to cast out demons as part of His Instructions – see Mark, chapter 16, verse 17 in the Bible.

  24. “Anti-racists” say there’s a RACE problem. They say it’ll be solved when non-Whites pour into ALL & ONLY White nations and “assimilate” to get a brown mixture.

  29. Ted B. says:

What Hollywood and the world call exorcism, is just a game that evil spirits pretend to play. Real exorcism is a one off event, and the exorcist does not die in the end.

  30. The sad truth is there are thousands of patients in state institutions that if filmed would appear completely possessed by evil forces. I am not talking about those classified as “mentally disabled” who can appear to be possessed. I am referring to those officially diagnosed as “developmentally disabled” in the category that used to be called, “severely or profoundly retarded.” Not all patients in that category appear possessed, but a small percentage of them have behaviors that make exorcisms in movies or sensationalized documentaries, look tame. Because of confidentiality rules, these people cannot be exposed, but anyone working in those environments eventually, that evil forces do inhabit and torture these sad people.

In fact no average person could arrive at any other conclusion. This is based in the worst karma of all. It is the effect of sin, (bad karmic causes) from past existences.

  31. George Bell says:

This article makes much ado about how Fr. Amroth and Friedkin did things independently of the Vatican. What needs to be understood is that the process for having official permission for such is a little looser is Rome. If there is a cardinal or two who gets what Fr. Amroth is doing and is fine with it, then Amroth knows he can operate with a certain level of liberty.

  32. Ken Valley says:

How dull that liberals and the anti-Christ always want to document Satan’s activities, than Christ’s miracles? We the people see miracles every day, but it always take Hollywood to be the mouthpiece for the Devil and his wickedness! This is why people are rejecting Hollywood and the hypocrisy of the elitist clowns!

  33. Ngallendou Dièye says:

Quiet exorcisms done in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ work every time.
Catholics calling on their fake saints, Moslems on their jinn, Hinduists on their deities, Buddhists on their spirits, Chinese on their ancestors, et cetera, Atheists on thier psychtropics, take a long time, cause a lot of grief and prove short lived.

    • Keter Malkut says:

Absolutely true. catholicism is a worse deception as it claims to honor the LORD Jesus but is a pagan concoction. See Bill Schnoebelen on youtube who was a former catholic priest, mormon priest, mason and witchdoc

Catholics cast out demons by the power of Christ, educate yourself before you speak your nonsense.

      • Keter Malkut says:

Read the Words of Jesus in Matthew 23:8-10, then seek The LORD to show you the Truth. I was raised catholic – it is a deep deception with pagan rituals that make it unclean. I was profoundly astounded when the LORD showed me that 2Corinthians 6 – touch not the unclean thing applied to everything connected with the catholic church, papal festivals etc.

      • Ted B. says:

I was raised Catholic, and now, as a born again Christian, all I can say is that JESUS never used Catholic rituals to cast out demons, nor did Paul the Apostle. When I watched the Exorcist, all I could say was “that’s not how it is done”.

    • Michael Pax says:

Fake saints? Which of these are fake? Peter, James, John, Andrew, Bartholomew, James, Thaddeus, Matthew, Philip, Simon, and Thomas. If you don’t believe in the communion of saints, you’re not Christian – did you know that?

      • sosrcountry says:

Anonymous, how wrong you are! Mary & Joseph are given a place of honor in the church because they raised Jesus as his parents.

That’s it, to honor them, the Catholic church is a New Testament church, hence they place Jesus as the Son of God like all Christian churches do!

      • Keter Malkut says:

Anonymous – the scripture that says that satan has blinded their eyes – is relevant. Pray for that blindness to be destroyed from the root so that they and all of us will see and hear The TRUTH of The LORD.

      • Keter Malkut says:

The Bible calls every believer a saint and it does NOT require the pope to confirm it:)

Do a search and you will find how Paul referred to the saints at Corinth etc. We are all saints as we honor the LORD.

      • Anonymous says:

Michael. Funny how your response is exactly the opposite of the truth as it’s Catholics that don’t follow God’s word as the don’t worship Jesus they worship humans (Mary), and Saints, who their leaders have elevated to deity. They believe humans forgive sin (Confession) when God is the only way to Salvation and forgiveness. They worship man made idols, and food shaped like Mary and Jesus also. Did you ever hear of anyone baptizing babies in the Bible. Have you ever read the Bible? Does it say anywhere you can’t be saved if you’re not baptized either?

That’s right! A real ‘Burning Man’. Probably stoned out of his mind. The words “pharmacy” and “pharmaceutical” are derived from the Greek word, pharmakeia (Strong’s G5331). This word is found in the Bible in the following passages of scripture.
19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery (pharmakeia), enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
      Galatians 5:19-21
and the light of a lamp will not shine in you (the great city Babylon) any longer; and the voice of the bridegroom and bride will not be heard in you any longer; for your merchants were the great men of the earth, because all the nations (ethnos) were deceived by your sorcery (pharmakeia).

  38. In a world where the very existence of God is often dismissed as superstition, the idea of possibly being influenced by some evil being for some is a laughing matter, but the reality is a Spiritual world does exist. The term possessed is more dramatic than the norm but millions are influenced by these Spiritual beings with some greatly so.

In a secular collage Sociology class we had a project on alternative treatments and my group included the removal of evil spirits as a part of the project. I had a video of a girl levitating while being addressed in a church service, she barked like a dog, and threw up a white substance after having the evil spirit being ordered to leave her. A more interesting part of this was watching unbelieving young students as they watched the video, the teacher being the daughter of an Bishop of a denomination that didn’t accept the existence of evil personified in this way. I got an A for the effort with the debate continuing if the video was real, it was.

If space allowed I could tell you many stories about accounts with these evil Spirits, they are more present than most could accept.

Hate by the way attracts them the most so make being kind to others a planned part of your life and if you desire more protection ask Holy Spirit to help you find that protection you desire with his in dwelling the best protection?

    • Donna Hill says:

Appreciate your post. I did a study of demonology in high school several decades ago. I found it was not a subject you want to delve into, can be very frightening. We live in a spiritual world with a power who seeks to destroy lives. Drugs and addiction are big tools used to destroy.

  39. To read how a secular skeptic ultimately has to confront the realty of miraculous medical cures, short-term prophecies fulfilled, and demonic possession, check the 2002 book “The Miracle Detective,” in which 22 miraculous phenomena are reviewed, focusing on the apparitions, prophecies, and miracle cures to 6 teen visionaries at Medjugorje, Bosnia, from 1981 to today. The author was given months of access to the Vatican archives, including the original audio tapes from the 1947 Exorcist case. Dozens of online references to the miracle cure of Rita Klauss are astounding.

  43. Exorcism won’t do it. And Priests don’t work. No, really. They are panhandlers in robes.

What works is slapping the victim in the face with a dead fish. Several times if necessary. The demon will beg you to use week-old sushi, but don’t give in!

You might consider reading the bible, where Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ commands his apostles to “cast out demons” in His name.

    • That’s hogwash, as demonstrated in the possession of Anna Ecklund, not to mention the possession of many Catholic nuns at Loudon, Aix, Laon, Louviers, in the 1500s and 1600s, with supernatural displays in public exorcisms that converted 1000s of Lutherans and Calvinists back to the One True Church.

      • TyW says:

Rituals don’t save you from evil or God’s judgement on sin. Only ACCEPTING that Jesus paid for your sin by dying for you, to redeem you back to God by satisfying God’s anger over your sin can God’s just judgement on you be averted. If we humble ourselves, admit our sins, ask for forgiveness, and accept His provision through Jesus to be saved from His fierce judgement; then He will forgive us, wipe our slate clean, and give us His Holy Spirit to live in us as a counselor and protector. Later when we die, we will live forever with Him in a new world free of all evil and sin. God never forces you to accept. Because He loves you, He gave you free will. We’re not robots. But we are responsible for our choice of either accepting His way of salvation or rejecting it. If we reject it, then our sins remain on our own heads and we will pay the just punishment for our sins by being thrown into an everlasting place of torment, separated forever from our loving Creator. Hell is a REAL place that was prepared for Satan and the angels that followed him in disobedience against God before this world began.

MANY people trust in rituals, were baptized as babies into a church, go to a church as if it’s a club and APPEAR to be Christians. But, they have not accepted JESUS as their saviour. Some put their faith in church leaders or Mary. Some talk about God with their mouths, but their hearts are far from Him. Many have been deceived by “pleasures” which in the end show up only as miseries. Many don’t seek truth or God with their whole hearts or they would find Him; for He is always longing to be found. He waits to see who wants Him, then He is ready to start a relationship. Again, He never forces HImself on anyone – He would not be a great God if He did.

If you get a copy of the Bible in a modern translation (the original languages were Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek) – the NIV (New International Version) is a pretty good one (anyone who knows more than 1 language knows that every language is rich and multiple translations and even going back to the original languages word by word can help in grasping the full meaning)…if you read the new testament(which is just the new agreement God made between Him and his creation/us) you can learn about demon possession.

If someone has accepted Jesus and so has His Holy Spirit in their life, they can not be possessed by a demon. Jesus talks about it as a house being filled or empty (Luke 11:24-26). If the house is empty, then God’s Spirit is not there, and evil spirits can enter. They enter through the doorway of sin. Sin is rebellion against God and His goodness and love. If someone loves lying, stealing, being selfish or arrogant, being unfaithful to one’s spouse or filling one’s mind with sexual perversions, hating and hurting others, etc that is right up a demon’s ally – the welcome mat is out and the vacancy sign is on.

True Christians can be oppressed ie attacked from the outside, but not taken over by an evil spirit who for example makes someone committ suicide.

  45. John Roberts says:

I’m uncertain why a person would need multiple exorcisms. An exorcism, at most, requires fasting, prayer and commanding the spirits in the name of Jesus Christ to leave the person. If that doesn’t work, one should consider another exorcist or the possibility that the problem is deeply psychological and proceed accordingly. If a person requires more exorcisms than one or two, something’s wrong. Either the afflicted person is engaged in sinful activities that allow spirits to reenter her, or she is feeding off being the center of attention. As Jesus said to those he administered to, “Go thy way and sin no more.”

    • L Sotka says:

John Roberts, there is one other thing that’s very important that might be the cause of why someone would need more than one exorcism. Remember Acts 19, where the town exorcists was trying to cast out demons “in the name of the Lord Jesus who Paul preaches”? The demons said to the men, “Jesus we know, and Paul we know, but who are you?” And the the demons beat up the men.

I was one of those who saw The Exorcist and wondered why the Priest never just cast out the demon in Jesus’s Name. Then later, I came across Acts 19.

    • Bob Abbott says:

Jesus himself addressed the problem of having demons removed and then allowing them back in.

    • Juan Oskar says:

I used to think the same thing. An enormous amount of piety and prayer is needed.

    • Such periodic “cleansings” are not full-blown exorcisms. Father Nonni in Rome exorcised a Catholic nun weekly, as observed by Time editor Tracy Wilkerson, a process he’d been doing for years with the nun. Then the nun would collapse, and leave with her mother. “Cleansings” are for those who are AFFLICTED, or “obsessed,” not fully possessed.

  46. D3F1ANT says:

What’s the next article in the series? Hunting for unicorns? Capturing Leprechauns? LOL! I mean…COME ON.

  47. John Trapp says:

Sometimes people aren’t possessed they are just the devil like Hillary Clinton. Who can deny that she is truly the one and only satan?

  48. For obvious reasons the Liberals cannot tolerate the idea of damnation, Hell, and the Devil. Better to trot out fey examples of dime store psychology from the Professoriate. Imagine all those psych patients with supernatural strength, knowledge of hidden objects and future events, speaking foreign languages and dialects fluently, able to move things telepathically, since most demonic possessions begin with poltergeist activity (see Pat Reading incidents, Litchfield, CT). Unclean spirits announcing their presence, working up to the main event a little bit at a time.

  49. p wilson says:

From some of the hostile comments here, you can see the devil is alive and well. Study the Shroud of Turin and all the decades long tests confirming its authenticity. Christ walked on earth and cast out demons. It is not a trick of the mind. The devil is very real, folks.

  50. What the Hell? If no one else will say it, I will. She has PMS! Yeah. Once a month. My ex-wife did the same thing. Eyes went black, the bed shook, she crawled across the ceiling, and her head spun around backwards. And went I asked if I could do anything to make her feel better, she would shoot me in the face with projectile vomiting.

    Exorcism doesn’t work. Only divorce!
