Chloe Grace Moretz became one of the loudest — and youngest — public supporters of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign when she spoke at the Democratic National Convention, joining the likes of Meryl Streep, Lena Dunham and Katy Perry.

One year later, even though her candidate did not win, Moretz is not quieting down. In fact, the 20-year-old actress using her voice to motivate her young fans to become politically active during the Trump presidency, which she describes as a “mockery of our system.”

Chloe Grace Moretz on Growing Up, Hillary Clinton and Hollywood Sexism

In an interview with Variety for this week’s Power of Young Hollywood issue, Moretz talked about some of her favorite female role models including Clinton, Julianne Moore, Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Watson and her best friend, fellow actress Zoey Deutch.

Two women who didn’t make the cut on Moretz’s list? Melania and Ivanka Trump.

When asked about her feelings toward the Trumps as role models for young women, Moretz paused and took a moment to think. “This is a difficult one to word,” she said with some hesitation.

“I think some people are in a bubble and it’s a very sad bubble,” Moretz said. “I hate to see any woman not speaking up for themselves and what they believe in. I wish they were more aware of their surroundings and I wish they were more aware of what their husband and father are doing. It pains me to see people who are just speaking through this veiled curtain of privilege and they have no compass of what is real.”

Moretz noted that she’s never met either Melania or Ivanka Trump. “I’m not them. I don’t know them,” she admitted. “I can only speak on what I see and it saddens me.”

“I think that young women deserve better role models,” she continued. “And I hate to see the way that Melania is treated — I think that she is treated really badly, and I hate to see a woman who is not respected by her own husband, and a daughter who doesn’t see that she is disrespected by her father. I think that’s really sad. I think they’re also products of mental manipulation. You can’t see the forest through the trees when you’re that deep.”

Asked what worries her the most as a young woman living in the Trump administration, Moretz replies: “It’s the concerns we all have. It feels like years and years of marching and protesting is being striped from beneath us.”

2016 was the first year Moretz voted in a presidential election. Looking ahead, the actress plans to campaign once again in 2020 for the candidate of her choice.

“I’ll support whoever is the best candidate and support whoever I really connect to and who will be perfect for our presidency,” she says. “In my dream of dreams, I’m still like, ‘Hillary, maybe you’ll run again!'”

  1. Carl Baggins says:

What a dumb, ignorant stupid little child. She has no idea what a role model is. Sit your DUMB ass down.

  2. Max says:

What could that teenager actress possibly know?

Adolescents seldom know much, and haven’t lived and experienced enough of life. I think they’re ridiculous when they shoot off their inexperienced mouths to impress who knows; especially super young actresses who don’t live in the real world. Maybe They can influence kids their own age, but older people won’t listen to them. So I wish they’d shut up and continue learning, because they have a lot to learn.
They can talk and sound smart, but I never listen to them.
They often know nothing. Every thing that comes out of their mouths is an echo.
    Annoying.

    • Sam says:

She’s never even had a real job. Haha.
Yet burdens us with a demand that she somehow knows everything.
Maybe it’s just the female trait of protectionism out of fear for their physical vulnerability. Defense.
The males that she costarred with complaining about fat shaming sound as though they were just being defensive to that demand.

  3. Jason K says:

“I think some people are in a bubble and it’s a very sad bubble,”

“It pains me to see people who are just speaking through this veiled curtain of privilege and they have no compass of what is real.”

Could someone please explain the concept of irony to her.?

  4. Tim West says:

So Chloe’s got a hard one for Hillary, who’s husband cheated on her in front of the nation and still does. And the same woman who tried to destroy those her husband abused. I don’t remember Donald Trump actually raping someone, just talking dirty. Liberals, like Chloe, live life with blinders on.

    • Tracy says:

I’m going to have to agree with the male posters. Her arrogance can be excused in part, due to her youth. Unlike many others in the entertainment industry. They certainly have the right to their opinion, just as the rest of us do. The problem occurs when they believe their opinion holds more weight. It doesn’t. And being an entertainer does not make them more intelligent or insightful. They need to recognize this.

  5. Kanye East says:

So does Chloe think she is a role model? Someone who with her mom and creepy “protective” brother’s support and approval promoted her career by being a sexualized child and now that that gig ran its course has to seek attention by being a psuedo serious womans-issues advocate?

  6. Allan Falk says:

what exactly is trump doing that are so bad for these hollywood millionaires?

  7. Sharon says:

Another blonde Hollywood bimbo with her nose in politics. Just another Hollywood elite. I no longer go to the movies with all the junk that comes out of Hollywood it’s not worth the money.

  8. Danny says:

Great another hate article. We’ll be hating her next movies.

  9. Shirl721 says:

Very good article. Intelligent young lady.

  10. sqeakyfrom says:

This child idiot is attempting to converse with adults? She best wait until she grows up to make judgements about the two beautiful first women.

  11. Peppy says:

A stupid liberal says something stupid. I’m shocked. And on top of that, she’s just made herself box office poison.

    • Burbank says:

Totally agree. I won’t be seeing anything she’s in after reading her ridiculous statements. What a stupid, young fool.

  12. Sad says:

    Creepy. Yeeech.

  13. SelSit says:

Melania declares that she’s anti-bullying (aren’t we all?) yet is married to the biggest bully of all.

Ivanka says she’s a feminist yet keeps her mouth shut when her father makes outrageously misogynistic remarks.

Personally, I don’t classify that as “classy”.

I also don’t understand why people think that celebrities shouldn’t be able to have an opinion. They have the unique position of having a public platform and are trying to use it to make a difference. It isn’t easy to put yourself out there like that. I say good for you, Chloe!

    • Burbank says:

Well, we as audience members are in the unique position to not watch any of her upcoming feature films. Let her voice anything she wants much to the dismay of the production companies that cast her.

  14. Mary Shearer says:

This has to be one of the stupidest articles I’ve ever read! What a joke!

  15. Kiernan1230 says:

America doesn’t need to keep hearing from entitled, bratty, Hollywood types on what America needs or doesn’t need! Hollywood “thinks” they allegedly understand the American people. Nothing could be further from the truth!

  16. Sam Steffen says:

Yet she approved the way the Hilary and Chelsea were disrespected by bill?

  17. Sharon says:

Perhaps she would approve of the Kardashian sisters. This young girl has not lived long enough to have a serious opinion.

  18. Christina Lemieux says:

I do not think Melania or ivanka are role models for my girls. Melania came to the USA to walk around in her underwear. She sold herself to the high$$$$$ bidder and that was Trump. He saw her and attacked her like a b!+¢π. Funny how the trolls say media elite words don’t matter and yet say billionaire daughter ivanka will help regular moms like me. She has nannies, maids, drivers, cooks, and someone to wipe her butt. She and Melania are the celebrity elites. They don’t represent real working women. Just pampered, spoiled, little rich girls. I am the real American woman.

    • D2 says:

Christina lemoeux… i dont make opinis about people i dont know, and neither should you… but after reading your comment it makes me wonder about “real american women”… which i doubt you are.. save your hate for yourself because you sound like spoiled little hater…

  19. Kathy Penna says:

You are truly living in a bubble if you can’t see what the Clinton’s are about. Do your research before you speak on the behalf of women!

  20. Marco says:

I despise Trump, but I think Moretz is being a big presumptuous and patronising about Melania and Ivanka, who are both capable of making their own choices, good and bad.

Also, whilst I agree that both Melania and Ivanka are privileged and out-of-touch with ordinary people, I’m not sure a Hollywood movie star who is only capable of citing other Hollywood movie stars, many of whom have traded on sex appeal in order to build their careers, rather than female scientists, female civil rights leaders and female writers and artists, as positive role models, is much better placed to advocate for ordinary women than either Melania and Ivanka.

My apologies in advance to all the sycophants at Variety who believe the Hollywood industry can do no wrong…

  21. Cynthia Leopard says:

What a stupid idiot. Who are you anyway. Not very imp for sure. You talk loke Bill was good to Hillary. What a joke you are. Grow up and get some education.

  22. Nicole Butler says:

And who cares what liberal hollywood thinks…you talk about bubble your in one yourselve dumbasses

  23. David Healy says:

The newest of the hollywood geniuses. You will never have the class or intelligence of these 2 women. You don’t know anything about them but like your fellow make believe friends you make assertions like you do.

    • Christina L says:

You say their opinion matters. So does that mean yours doesn’t either? You are a lemming. Keep running! Taking you clothes off for men to ogle is not class. It’s called getting naked for money.

  24. krista ebersole says:

Wat is her career in the tank does she think this is going to get her noticed by belittling 2 very classy wonderful mom’s who work hard and love there families I think before u talk unkind of other women remember that a role model starts with finding good in all women

    • Julie says:

      Classy? LOL

You know what’s classy? Being honest in business dealings; not selling your body to the highest bidder.

      • Marco says:

Who is selling their body to the highest bidder? Sounds like a rather sexist and judgemental comment to me.

Oh well. I guess it’s just as well there is no sexual exploitation in Hollywood, right?

  25. David says:

Chloe, you knew, of course, there is a prerequisite for supporting Melania and Ivanka. It’s the attribute of intelligence. So, naturally, you took the only option available to you. Someday, hopefully not too far from today, you will actually hone your skill sets and develop a talent. It will be only then that you will achieve the ability to discern talent, skills, knowledge, experience and substance. Try listening to a couple of Elvis songs: Walk A Mile in My Shoes and Clean Up Your Own Backyard.

  26. Bonnie Stafford says:

Wow! Movie stars used in the same sentence with good role models??? Guess this young gal is brain dead at such a young age!

  27. Kathy says:

Chloe is a snowflake! Clueless! If she really believes lying Hillary is a roll model. Omg! She is lost!

  28. Andrea Carter says:

Chloe’s in a bubble, too. She publicly criticized Ivanka and Melania as two figurines of regression when she herself rattled off a list of Female Influencers–who all of them White, strike similar obscene irony of the definitions of Fake Progressives trying to frame self-cred in being woke and ethically radically.

No one is saying Chloe has to absolutely have at least one “Black Friend” to trot out to validate that she is morally sound and exemplary but she rattled off a long list of names of supposed female Influencers who all are Whitebread gals. Not one “of Color” friend or Influencer? Not impressed to know and befriend any woman of color? Not Amanda Stenberg or Jendayi or Gina Rodriquez?

This keeps happening with White starlets? They can’t see who they really are? She needs to be schooled by Shailene Woodley who I haven’t yet seen hang out with Hollywood People of Color but she went farther than superficial comforts to fight for the American Indigenous (Standing Rock), the ignored marginalized people in our country’s narrative.

Chloe hurts me. I thought she was growing up differently but she is turning out to be more of the same textbook White Liberal Elite.

(Forgive me for probably messing up the spelling off mentioned names in my comments.)

    • Marco says:

      Well said.

The rich white Hollywood faux-liberal Hillary supporting elite are hardly much better than the right-wingers. They still live in gated communities, send their kids to all-white private schools, favour lower taxes than genuinely left-wing leaders, and ignore the real problems faced by the poor and BAME communities.

  29. Terri says:

I find it interesting that she speaks about how Ivanka and Melania are treated. Is she not concerned with how Old Bill treated Hillary?

  30. Kaboom! says:

Chloe Moretz is just another arrogant and ignorant actress. She barely achieved a high school education, and only succeeds at being overpaid (she is worth $12 million at 20 years old). Why Variety has to post multiple stories about her today is suspect.

  31. Truthsayer says:

So her heroes are all actresses that don’t really change things and really don’t do anything.. but then chastises Ivanka and Melania, ok. Lets all look up to fake people and then bash other fake people because you don’t like who they’re related to. Next time vote for better candidates.

  32. silvereyes1945 says:

This isn’t about her acting ability. This is about the fact that she is right concerning Ivanka, Melania, and Trump. Apparently, you can’t see the forest through the trees either.

    • Sandy says:

Sorry but standing in front of a camera reading other people’s written work does not qualify anyone to be an intellectual evaluator.
The people mentioned are high achievers through academia and initiating executive decisions for work product and business successes, as everyone knows.

Must be out of new movie roles. Smells like a publicity stunt, you know like when a pr agent calls the paps everytime their supposedly divorcing client leaves the house because the client is out of high profile roles. Ouch.

  33. Sam says:

Ugggggg stay out of the movie biz you’re not an actor. No talent.
Neighbors 2 could have done much better with a hotter talented unknown star.
    Sorry, just my opinion.

    • Sandy says:

I was completely annoyed that she was supposedly a sorority girl in neighbors 2. It wrecked the sorority theme story line but the rest of the movie was great fun.

    • John says:

I thought she was even more brilliant in “The Fifth Wave”. She deserves to be nominated for the next Golden Raspberry Awards.

  34. Blair says:

    Did she insult you?

  35. Toni says:

Apparently her agent hasn’t told her she’s in the movie biz ….. selling tickets to everyone…. not insulting them.
