A newly redesigned version of Variety.com launched Tuesday along with a new editorial initiative, Variety500, which indexes the 500 most influential individuals working in the global entertainment business.
The new Variety.com offers a more immersive experience for Hollywood loyalists, one that is both mobile-friendly and easier to navigate. Having just notched a record 28 million unique visitors for the month of August, Variety is poised for the next phase of growth.
The re-imagined website highlights Variety’s award-winning coverage, bringing new prominence to video, music, newsletters and politics while maintaining the visibility of the traditional areas of film, television and digital where the publication remains strong.
Politics is of particular importance to Variety, spotlighted by the work of senior political editor Ted Johnson, who recently moved to Washington D.C. to cover the Trump administration. Reviews are also a focal point of the redesign, enhancing this critical piece of the editorial strategy by layering in Critics’ Picks to provide a deeper, more curated, user experience.
Another major addition to the new website is Variety500, the culmination of nearly a year of exhaustive research intended to focus on the biggest movers and shakers in media working in Hollywood and globally. The 500 people on this unranked list have distinguished themselves across a wide range of industry sectors from film and TV to music and gaming, in jobs from CEOs and directors to agents and actors.
There was considerable internal debate over whom to include among the thousands of individuals working across all facets of the business; the choices are sure to spark even more conversation. Variety500 is available as both a highly interactive digital destination, at Variety500.com, and as a beautifully designed stand-alone print edition. Sponsored by Verizon Digital Media Services, Variety500 will be an annual feature already scheduled to return in 2018.
