NBC and Sony Pictures TV are turning “The Blacklist” into a franchise vehicle, with the Peacock giving the greenlight to a spinoff series to be titled “The Blacklist: Redemption,” toplined by Famke Janssen and Ryan Eggold.
The planted spinoff aired on Thursday as an episode of “Blacklist.” Janssen plays the mother of Eggold who has been a series regular on “Blacklist” since its 2013 debut. Janssen’s character (Susan “Scottie” Hargrave) first appeared in the May 5 episode of “Blacklist.”
The premise revolves around Eggold’s character, Tom Keen, being recruited into a secret “private military organization” called Grey Matters that takes on ultra-cover assignments. Keen discovers that his long-lost mother (Janssen) is the unit’s mysterious leader, which sends him on a mission to uncover the truth about her motives and his past.
The cast also includes Edi Gathegi and Tawny Cypress.
Thursday’s episode of “The Blacklist” which introduced the spinoff characters saw a week-to-week increase in the same-day ratings (1.3/4 in 18-49, 6.4 million viewers overall), matching the show’s best results in five weeks.
“Blacklist” creators Jon Bokenkamp and John Eisendrath serve as writers and executive producers; John Fox and John Davis also executive produce. Michael Dinner directed the episode.
