A move off its traditional Sunday night to Monday resulted in a slight overnight ratings decline for the Grammy Awards on CBS, as this year’s show honoring the best in music appears to have joined other kudocasts this television season in posting year-over-year losses.
In the metered-market overnights, last night’s show averaged a 16.1 household rating, down a little from last year’s 16.6, which translated into a six-year low in both total viewers (24.82 million) and adults 18-49 (8.3 rating/23 share). Despite last year’s falloffs — down 16% in the demo and nearly 4 million total viewers lighter than 2014 — the Grammys remain comfortably entrenched as TV’s No. 2-rated awards show, behind only the Oscars.
The “fast affiliate” ratings released at 8 a.m. PT won’t accurately reflect viewership for the awards show, as it was seen live in the West for the first time. CBS is expected to issue time zone-adjusted estimates later today.
The 58th Annual Grammy Awards, hosted by LL Cool J from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, handed out top prizes to Taylor Swift (album of the year for “1989”), Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars (record of the year for “Uptown Funk”) and Ed Sheeran (song of the year for “Thinking Out Loud”). Rapper Kendrick Lamar was another big winner, picking up five statuettes.
