Ratings: ABC’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season Finale Tops Night, Up From Last Year

ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” capped a strong season 12 by standing as Thursday’s top-rated series in key demos and outperforming its year-ago finale. It wasn’t all smiles at the Alphabet, though, as “The Catch” didn’t have much to show for its two-hour finale on a night that also saw the closers of NBC’s “The Blacklist,” CBS’ “Mom” and the CW dramas.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “Grey’s Anatomy” averaged a 2.3 rating/9 share in adults 18-49 and 8.1 million viewers overall from 8 to 9 p.m., winning its time period among the broadcasters in key demos. It was up 0.2 week to week in 18-49 to a 14-week high (since its midseason premiere), and also rose a tick from its 2015 season finale (2.2).

From 9 to 11 p.m., the first-season finale of “The Catch” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall) placed third in its timeslot, down a tick from last week’s hourlong episode. The show, which has been renewed for a second season, did a 0.9 for its first two half-hours but then fell to a 0.8 at 10 and 10:30.

ABC and CBS tied for the night’s 18-49 lead, with the Alphabet winning in 18-34 and the Eye in adults 25-54 as well as total viewers. CBS won all four Thursdays in the sweep in same-day 18-49, though ABC moved ahead the first three Thursdays in Live+3.

At CBS, a repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” (1.7/7 in 18-49, 8.4 million viewers overall) was followed by “The Odd Couple” (1.5/6 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall), which came within a tenth of its week-ago score behind an original “Big Bang.” “Mom” also held up well at 9 (1.7/6 in 18-49, 8.0 million viewers overall), down a tenth from last week but growing 0.2 from its lead-in and winning among the broadcasters in most categories. A special second original “Odd Couple” at 9:30 p.m. (1.4/5 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall) won its timeslot among the Big Four in 18-49 (but down 0.3 from last week’s “2 Broke Girls”), and “Rush Hour” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall) held steady at 10.

NBC’s “Strong” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 2.5 million viewers overall) remains a weak start to the night, down a tenth from last week. “The Blacklist” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 6.7 million viewers overall) more than doubled its lead-in in most categories and held steady for its season finale, and “Game of Silence” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall) also held even in the demo while edging up again in total viewers.

Also holding steady were Fox’s “Bones” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall) and “American Grit” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 2.0 million viewers overall). And CW’s finale of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” also held at last week’s number (0.7/3 in 18-49, 1.9 million viewers overall), while the closer of “The 100” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 1.3 million viewers overall) was up a tick, at least in the prelims.
