Peabody Awards to Launch Media Center for Scholarly Research, Digital Production

The Peabody Awards will branch out into scholarly research and digital media production through the creation of The Media Center at Peabody.

Peabody executive director Jeffrey Jones announced the launch of the new center at an event in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, which also marked the 75th anniversary of the awards and celebrated the lifetime achievements of Norman Lear, a Peabody Award honoree. The event featured a conversation between the iconic “All in the Family” creator and producer Judd Apatow.

Jones said that the media center will provide “a platform for elevating the currency, conversation around, and impact of each year’s best stories in television, radio and digital media.”

“It furthers our goal of becoming a year-round organization that demonstrates how and why Peabody-winning stories are influencing the national dialogue about pressing social issues,” he added.

The Media Center will have three areas of focus: Peabody Programs, which aim to engage with the changing media industry landscape; the Peabody Archive,  the third largest archive of audiovisual materials in the United States; and the Peabody Academy, which helps connect Peabody winners with future award-winning storytellers. Jones will direct The Media Center’s work and will be joined by a distinguished group of television and media studies scholars from across the country.

This year’s Peabody honorees included David Letterman, Jon Stewart and the showrunners of “Mr. Robot,” “Unreal,” “Transparent,” “Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” who accepted their awards at the ceremony in New York in May. The Media Center at Peabody is based at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
