Bouncing off the success of Spike’s record-breaking series “Lip Sync Battle,” a kids-themed spin-off “Lip Sync Battle Jr.” is being developed at Spike and sister net Nickelodeon, Variety has learned. A special, serving as a precursor to a possible series, will air on both Viacom-owned cablers this year.
“Lip Sync Battle Jr.” is the first special edition project for “Lip Sync Battle,” as more event specials will be developed across the Viacom portfolio.
“Lip Sync Battle Jr.” will celebrate kids’ love of music and comedy, featuring similar lip sync battles to that in the flagship show, but with new variety elements designed to let young-ins shine. The special and the potential series hail from “Lip Sync Battle” producers Casey Patterson Entertainment and Matador with exec producers Casey Patterson and Jay Peterson.
“On the long list of wonderful surprises about ‘Lip Sync Battle’ is our family co-viewing,” the two producers said in a joint statement. “‘Lip Sync Battle’s’ multigenerational appeal is our favorite part of the show and the whole ‘Lip Sync Battle’ family is very excited about developing a new music based, comedy variety format to showcase how much our ‘Lip Sync Battle’ kids rock! It’s all the fun of ‘Lip Sync Battle,’ only smaller.”
“Lip Sync Battle” has put Spike on the map, ranking as its most-watched show in history, bringing in more than 4 million viewers per week, and garnering over a half billion online views. The social-savvy show was recently renewed for Season 3.
