Country music star Blake Shelton set out to “save the Kids’ Choice Awards,” held Saturday at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. – but not until his famous pals Pharrell, Adam Levine and Selena Gomez paid him a visit, offering words of encouragement.
Shelton sat in front of his dressing room mirror staring at himself as “Star Wars” stormtroopers marched onstage to take over the Nickelodeon show. The host grabbed his blaster and exchanged fire with the troopers – interrupted by last year’s host Nick Jonas shouting “keep it down” — before driving on the KCA stage in a chair modeled after his seating on “The Voice.”
“You all know why this show is so cool?” “The Voice” judge asked, greeting the crowd. “Because you control everything.”
The audience was given more control over this year’s show than any other year. They voted for the winners, the set design for the stage and which viral Internet star would be slimed – Bethany Mota or Cameron Dallas.
Ellen DeGeneres presented the first award of the night, favorite animated movie, to Adam Sandler for “Hotel Transylvania 2.” “I want to dedicate this award to my big brother Scott. He was the best roommate growing up,” said Sandler. Mimicking his character Dracula from the film, he said, “And remember, I don’t say bla bla bla.”
DeGeneres did not miss her shot at scoring a viral moment while onstage. “We’re going to create the biggest Snapchat,” said the “Ellen” host. “I’ll Snapchat you (the audience) while you Snapchat me.”
Some of the night’s other big winners included Zendaya, who won for “K.C. Undercover”; Amy Poehler, who won for “Inside Out”; Jennifer Lawrence, for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2”; “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” for favorite movie; and “The Voice” for favorite talent competition.
“I just want you to know that doing and making positive programming for young people is so important to me and I will keep doing it,” said Zendaya as she received her orange blimp. “And to all of the parents out there, thank you for letting me be a role model for your children. I really do not take that for granted.”
KCA nominee Meghan Trainor and “The Flash’s” Grant Gustin presented the blimp for favorite TV show; and Rob Gronkowski and Dove Cameron presented the blimp for favorite music group. John Stamos and Keke Palmer presented the blimp for favorite movie after showering fans with boxes of popcorn.
The show had no shortage of upcoming blockbuster previews either. Will Arnett hit the KCA stage to show the trailer for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” and Jason Sudeikis and Josh Gad previewed “Angry Birds.” Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. showed the latest trailer for “Captain America: Civil War,” after engaging in an all-out thumb fight battle.
Throughout the show Shelton kept the energy and laughter high with some comedic surprises – including coming out onstage dressed as a unicorn.
“Recently, I became a victim of throwback Thursday,” said Shelton showing a dorky picture of himself. “But, I’m not the only one.”
Photos of Trainor holding a cat, Buddy Valastro in front of a cake and Stamos with rock star hair flashed across the screen, showing the stars in their younger days.
Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth performed their hit “See You Again,” and DNCE performed “Cake by the Ocean” with floating sea animals, while Silento got everyone out of their seats with his signature song “Whip/Nae Nae.”
It wouldn’t be a Kids’ Choice Awards without slime – and there was a lot of it. While Internet stars Mota and Dallas were able to anticipate who would be the lucky victim of the green goo – it was ultimately Dallas — everyone else was taken by surprise.
Girl group Fifth Harmony was slimed at the podium after accepting the orange blimp for favorite music group, Sudeikis and Gad got the green goo while attempting an “Angry Bird” sling shot and “Henry Danger’s” Jace Norman sneaked Stamos from behind and doused the “Fuller House” star in slime.
Not to be left out, Shelton gave himself a green bath but not before letting the audience have its share of slime for the night.
