‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Finale: A Wedding, Baby & Secret Marriage (SPOILERS)

Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you have not watched the “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12 finale, Episode 24, titled “Family Affair.” To refresh your memory on where we left off, read last week’s “Grey’s Anatomy” recap.

Wedding bells were ringing on the Season 12 finale of “Grey’s Anatomy” for Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) who tied the knot after Amelia popped the question last week.

Throughout the episode, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) was uneasy about the wedding, causing Amelia to second-guess whether she should go through with the marriage, but after quickly leaving the church, she decided to bite the bullet. Amelia’s bridesmaids were Mer and Maggie (Kelly McCreary), who were both caught smiling at Nathan during the wedding. (In case you forgot, Mer hooked up with Dr. McKiwi in the car last week.)

After weeks of turmoil for Ben (Jason George) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson), the longstanding couple appear to be back on the mend, with Ben getting his redemption in the most dramatic and symbolic way possible — by delivering April’s (Sarah Drew) baby at home.

To jog our readers’ memories, Ben was suspended from the hospital a few episodes back because he unsafely delivered a baby, causing the death of both baby and mother.

In tonight’s episode, when April — a.k.a. Owen’s best man — started unexpectedly having contractions, Ben was put back into the same situation that landed him in hot water, since they couldn’t get to the hospital safely due to a terrible storm, plus the baby was breech and needed to be delivered quickly. Having determined that April needed to have an emergency C-section, Ben called Bailey, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) who were all at the hospital to ask for their help. Everyone agreed that Ben did in fact need to deliver the baby and so he did with no meds from home.

There was more mending on the couples’ front, as Arizona came around to Callie (Sara Ramirez). After the recent, heartbreaking custody verdict that left Sofia with Arizona and prompted Callie to breakup with Penny (Samantha Sloyan), at the end of tonight’s episode, Arizona brought Sofia to Callie and told her that she can temporarily take her to New York with Penny, and wants to work with her to figure out some sort of joint custody arrangement because they both deserve to be happy. (ICYMI: Ramirez announced she’s departing “Grey’s Anatomy,” so Callie moving to New York writes the actress off the show — but also leaves room for her to come back.)

The most shocking moment came courtesy of Jo’s (Camilla Luddington) big secret. Viewers finally learned why she turned down Alex’s (Justin Chambers) proposals — not because she doesn’t love him, but because she is married to someone else.

With Alex pissed that Jo rejected him again, Jo escaped to the bar with Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) and Andrew (Giacomo Gianniotti) and drunkenly revealed to her friends that she’s been married to someone else all this time and has been using a fake name as a secret identity (even Alex does not know her real name). Overcome with emotion, Andrew brings Jo home safely after the bar, and she reveals that her husband was abusive so she had to flee, but if she tries to divorce him, he’ll find her. In true Karev fashion, seeing Jo together with Andrew prompts him to believe that she rejected his proposal because she’s been with Andrew romantically — so he punches him.

Below, Luddington and Scorsone talk to Variety about the finale, Shonda Rhimes taking on domestic violence, and what’s to come in Season 13. (Luddington and Scorsone spoke to Variety in separate interviews.)

I know the writers don’t tell the cast a lot, but how much do you know about Jo’s secret identity?

Luddington: I just know that I ran. The reason she says no [to Alex’s proposal] is that she has basically gone into hiding to get away from [her husband] and escape him. She thinks that if she files divorce papers, he will find her.

Do you know if will we find out to whom Jo is married?

Luddington: It’s obviously someone that she thinks is extremely dangerous, and it’s not someone who would only affect her but would also affect Alex. I would assume that we have to explore that. I think it’s a big enough story and issue that you can’t touch on it and then pretend that it’s in the background. At some point, all of those details will have to come out.

Does Jo really want to marry Alex?

Luddington: Yeah. I think she’s absolutely in love with Alex and she absolutely wants to have a family with him. I think she would have had that ring on her finger several episodes ago, but it’s this one massive thing that has prevented her from marrying him. I think it’s heartbreaking for Alex and also heartbreaking for her.

If Jo comes clean to Alex, could this could actually bring them closer because he’ll want to protect her?

Scorsone: Of course. I think, especially considering his history, if anything, my fear would be that he’d be too supportive — vigilante style.

Luddington: I think there are so many elements to it that now it’s super complicated. I do think he would have understood if she told him upfront. I think now the issue is, why did she wait? If you’re in love with somebody and you trust that person, you do tell them extremely important information like that. Maybe he’ll understand, especially after she explains that she kept that information because she was worried he would go do something that was dangerous, but now that she’s put herself into a compromising situation, it will complicate things for sure. There’s a lot to discuss there.

Alex and Jo’s storyline deals with domestic violence. This is another instance of Shonda Rhimes incorporating important topics into her shows. Would you like to see that story continue so that the conversation keeps on going?

Scorsone: I think it would be fantastic if Shonda decided to tackle a delicate subject like that one. Domestic violence is so complicated due, in part, to all the mixed up emotions surrounding fear and bonding. It’s a topic that requires nuance and sensitivity and Shonda is masterful with both of those things. I don’t know what next season will be, but I trust Shonda to handle any heavy or tricky topic deftly.

How will things change now that Amelia and Owen are married?

Scorsone: I think, up until now, their default setting when they’ve gotten scared has been to run. Now that they’re a family I hope they’ll try talking about things a little more before hightailing. They both seem like people who fight hard for family.

Right. They can’t be so on-and-off, now that they’re married. Do you think their future will be a happy road, or will it still be rocky?

Scorsone: In Shondaland all roads are rocky! I’m sure there will be some bumps in the road. They are pretty complicated souls. But hopefully the bumps will happen in the same room now instead of on opposite sides of the hospital. And they might have a little more uninterrupted romance time. I swear those pagers are out to get them!

Meredith has a strong reaction to Amelia marrying Owen. What do you think Amelia’s reaction will be to Mer hooking up with Riggs?

Scorsone: Amelia doesn’t yet know about the hookup, so I don’t know how she’ll react. I think she’s probably ready for something more than a random backseat adventure.

Are Mer, Riggs and Maggie heading into love triangle territory next season?

Scorsone: I know nothing — really. But it sure looks like it.

How will Owen react to hearing about Riggs and Mer’s hookup? The two guys don’t exactly have the best history.

Scorsone: He might have some opinions on the subject. She felt pretty comfortable sharing her reservations about his love life. He might gently remind her of that.

What was it like to get married? (On TV at the very least, but still fun!)

Scorsone: It was so much less stressful than getting real-life married — all the storybook fun and froth and romance without having to do any of the planning!
