Produced by Tandem, and a Canal Plus Original Series, “Spotless” also underscores globalization of high-end series talent
Recently airing on NBC Universal’s Esquire Network, the Studiocanal-sold crime dramedy “Spotless,” a Canal Plus original series produced by Tandem Productions, has been licensed to Brazilian TV giant Globo’s pay TV service Globosat, the biggest cable-satellite operator in the country.
“Spotless” is Tandem’s first production for Canal Plus after it was purchased in January 2012, by Studiocanal, owned in turn by Vivendi’s Canal Plus Group – an early example of synergies within Vivendi companies. “Spotless” also marks a new step in Canal Plus’ international production of original content, as Fabrice de la Patelliere, director of French drama and co-productions at Canal Plus, said when “Spotless” was announced at 2014’s Mip TV in April 2014.
With Vivendi looking to broaden dramatically its talent base and boost a show’s lure far outside its native France, that international drive is instanced by cast – star Marc-Andre Grondin (“C.R.A.Z.Y.”) is Canadian, Denis Menochet (“Inglourious Basterds”) is French; setting – season one was shot on location in London; and the show’s totally English-language dialogue and Anglophone showrunner-producers.
“Spotless” was co-created by U.K./U.S.-educated Ed McCardie, who wrote the original British “Shameless,” and Academy Award-winning writer-producer Corinne Marrinan, whose credits include “CSI” and “Crossing Lines.” Tandem (“Pillars of the Earth,” “Crossing Lines”), however, is based out of Germany.
“Spotless” will air on Globosat’s premium pay TV service + Globosat Channel, which has traditionally offered upscale HD technology, while cherry-picking series from beyond Brazil and the U.S., targeting deeper-pocketed and more cosmopolitan Brazilian audiences. As Globo pushes its new Globo Play video streaming service, Globosat has also acquired SVOD rights on a non-exclusive basis.
“Our sale of ‘Spotless’ to Globosat is a further example of how our rich and diverse content portfolio is able to travel far and wide,” said Katrina Neylon, Studiocanal executive vice president, sales and marketing.
“With a delicious mix of high drama that is very dark and intense, while at the same time charming, sexy and peppered with black humor, we are sure that ‘Spotless’ will charm viewers throughout Brazil,” she added.
Co-starring the British-Irish Brendan Coyle, the long-suffering butler John Bates in “Downton Abbey” who plays against “Downton” type as a fastidiously elegant if murderous mob boss, the darkly humored “Spotless” stars Grondin as a man seeking a quiet life who runs a nice sideline in crime scene cleaning. His life is blown to pieces when his outlaw brother resurfaces, plunging both into a nightmarish world of organized crime and past shared traumas. With his wife (Miranda Raison, “24,” “Live Another Day”), Jean battles, seemingly in vain, to get his life back on track.
The Globosat deal adds to early sales on “Spotless” outside the U.S., taking in DirecTV Latin America (in a licensing pact that carved out Brazil), SBS Australia and South Africa’s M-Net.
