TV Ratings: DNC Beats RNC by Nearly 5 Million Viewers in Night 2 Final Numbers

Democratic National Convention Ratings: DNC Beats

The final TV ratings are in for the second night of the Democratic National Convention, and once again the DNC attracted a larger audience than its Republican counterparts did last week.

From 10-11:15 p.m. — a timeframe that included headline speaker Bill Clinton’s nearly 50-minute speech extolling the virtues of official Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton — NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and Fox Business Network drew an average audience of 24.7 million.

That number is slightly below the total for Night 2 of 2012’s DNC, which drew 25.12 million across those networks, minus Fox Business, but plus PBS and Current TV. It is, however, nearly 5 million more pairs of eyeballs than Night 2 of the 2016 RNC drew last Tuesday (19.75 million).

CNN, which garnered the biggest convention audience of the night, was once again up sharply from 2012’s draw, with 5.93 million total viewers from 10-11:15, and 2.05 million in the important-to-cable-news demographic of 25-54. In 2012, CNN drew 4.13 million total viewers from 10-11 p.m. and 1.54 million in the 25-54 demo.

MSNBC slipped behind second-place NBC with 3.83 million viewers and 1.17 million in the 25-54 demo, but remained ahead of ABC, CBS, and Fox News.

Fox News slipped to a not-unexpected last place in terms of DNC coverage, with 2.85 million total viewers and 634,000 in the 25-54 demo.

Again, it’s worth recalling that in 2012, the DNC occurred over only three days. On the second night, Sept. 5, 2012, NBC carried the NFL season opener (New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys) rather than any convention coverage.

  1. pickles says:

This “article” is old news. People were all interested in the Sanders drama anyway. More drama more viewers. The headline reads like the “writer” is kissing Clintons butt.

  2. matthew rogers says:

So what? Obama Sanders and Bill Clinton drew the views.

  3. Judy Wilson says:

I don’t know who’s counting, but I watched the roll call on Direct TV 349 so I did not have to listen to commentators.

  4. Mindy Cameron says:

Important to note, many HRC supporters skipped networks and watched C-Span due to over reporting of the Bernie protesters and hyperbolic editorializing.

  5. Chris Konkol says:

If one takes into account social media and not just TV the RNC convention blew the DNC convention out of the water. Even during the DNC convention more twitter activity about Trump than DNC.

    • Ellicott VA says:

Republicans are far less technically saavy than the educated Democrats. Trump voters are typically HS level or below. Otherwise how can you explain Trump’s popularity?

      • Shane says:

How funny. You’re clearly of the same mind as Trump….that all press is good press. Most of the twitter activity for the RNC was mocking and negative.

  6. YUCK says:

Bill Clinton chose other woman over Hillary. You should too.

  7. REAL Americans like myself, a USN veteran would rather hear and watch about POSITIVES for America than the gopeepee teaser for American Horror Story babbled by those who are like listening to the racist, bigoted, misogynistic, narcissistic deranged chump and its braindead FOOLowers and other anal birthed buttplugs just like hearing the audible drip of a leaking colostomy bag.

  8. nancy says:

Lol i tuned in cause everyone said they were booing and the convention was chaos. I didn’t watch all the gop convention but it didn’t seem that bad. Not being partisan completely independent in case that was worded badly.

    • Big Bubba 1988 says:

The DNC has been better produced, with a much more varied, and experienced, cast of speakers. You’re definitely not being unbiased.

      Scott Baio ROFL

    • norma wolvington says:

Did you count the ones on ATT U-Verse and Direct TV?

  9. kwgrid says:

The DNC showed the true spirit of America, not that nasty stuff from the RNC. mho

    • YUCK says:

DNC showed the people you don’t want to live next door to. Sure, use them for votes but they are the reason for skyrocketing home prices.

      • mr.underbocky says:

if your here and wondering why your neighbor or friend or spouse is a drumph follower, i know its difficult to understand. your answer i know is inside you but being the polite positive friend you are you disconnect and tell yourself its not true…. but it is, these people are sick, full of fear and rotting from hate inside that they have suppressed(some more than others), i give you permission to expose them and force it into the light or just walk away, these are mentally ill people who are so twisted by fear that no amount of truth or fact or reason will turn them into patriots and not birthers, we can only be there for them when or if they crack

  10. Aie says:

That’s why they are psst off. You see all different types of robo blasts in every article from trump supporters showing their hate as they’re “scared”. Imagine that.

  11. Suz says:

I guess people started watching TV live again…

  12. james ginn says:

    DNC auditorium was half empty.

  13. So you’re saying a convention headlined by FLOTUS, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Alicia Keys performance, and Bill Clinton got higher ratings than Scott Baio, some old underwear model, an angry cop and Trumps kids? You’re kidding.

  14. GT says:

3/4 of the program is Hollywood entertainment.

  15. One in VA says:

It is because we were all waiting for Bernie to do something good. Once we realized he was going to give in to the machine, we all turned it off. :)

  16. Cecil B Da Mill says:

And presto. Slick Willy is reborn, and has fond memories of that young girl of 27 when she got fired for lying during the Watergate mess, and now no longer a young girl, that same lovely woman has grown into a helper to all man and woman kind and lays awake at night trying to make the world a better place. Just this year she received the FBI”S highest accolade “Gross negligence’ beyond the call of duty. She’s a friend to cats, dogs and small forest creatures, and says if elected she will swear on a stack of Bibles when her term is finished, she will not loot and pillage the White House.

    • Avattoir says:

Did someone happen to see our Village idiot? He’s been missi- Oh THERE YOU ARE, CEC! Come along now, we playing parcheesi and serving frozen fruit poppers tonight at the home!

  17. Carol Ottinger says:

Most people I know watched convention on C-Span 1.

  18. BillUSA says:

That the ratings were higher for the Dems just underscores the fact that they ignored the Reps who themselves tuned in to the spectacle of the lying leftist bra-burner for some dark comedy.

    • Suz says:

Uhm, yeah, she was a right wing conservative with short hair and a headband in the bra burning days. Not a long haired “give peace a chance” hippie.

  19. Nanny Mo says:

It’s all the Republicans watching too. Don’t let that fool you. I know Repubs who had house parties to watch, wise-crack and gloat over the boo-ing. They served lemons and sauerkraut. This is going to be one of the craziness elections in memory.

    • Shane says:

OHHH those Republicans sure know how to party LMAO!!

btw, there wasn’t nearly as much booing as there was cheering….at the RNC there was crickets most of the time.

  20. Bob says:

Interesting that the ratings for the DNC was so much bigger than the ratings for the Republican National Clownvention. Maybe Trumpo the Clown isn’t as popular as he likes us to believe.
