BMX bike superstar Dave Mirra, who also hosted MTV’s “Real World/Road Rules” challenge, has died of an apparent suicide.

The 41 year-old was found dead in his truck in North Carolina on Thursday with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to law enforcement officials.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Mirra hosted “The Challenge” on MTV from 2004 to 2005 as well as being the subject of the “Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX” video game series. Mirra also guest starred on an episode the “George Lopez” show in 2004.

The decorated athlete medaled in the X Games every year from its inception in 1995 to 2008, holding a total of 24 medals, which was the record at one point.

“I just wish he would have called me,” fellow BMX pro T.J. Lavin told TMZ. “I would have jumped on a plane in a second. There’s always another way. If anyone needs help, just please get it. I feel sick about this.”

  1. So sad to hear, but this is a good example where our society is sadly going, we are not what we do or how famous or rich we are, those things are fleeting. Suicides are way up, at the same time, as having a higher power (something outside ourselves) or a God is declining. Cause and effect maybe not, but is worth looking into. I call it the Kardashian effect, good luck millennials, you should really reconsider who and what you idolize, it is not working!

I would hope his family would consent to a brain exam (slicing) … there’s little study done on the effects of x-games head injuries.. nothing close to that of boxers, hockey & football players .. all whom have a high rate of violent crimes, drug abuse(self medication) and suicide rate(above average in all studied populations per capita)

.. this shit is fucking tragic … I’ve ridden with mirra .. both ramp and dirt .. he was a god-like figure to me.. what he could do on a bike was just stooped .. and he hands-on helped me land my first tailwhip.. .showing me instantly what I was doing wrong (mechanics & centre of mass) with patients and a smile on his face .. he was an awesomely amazing person from my interactions with him so so so many years ago.. it’s a shame

  3. Well in my book ‘apparent’ doesn’t exclude the possibility of murder !-(
His apparent death should be investigated … no, I mean, his certain death should be investigated.
    Sad as a mofo ….

Correction needed:MTV’s “Real World/Road Rules” challenge

The word Challenge is part of the title, it should say “Real World/Road Rules Challenge”

  5. chris says:

sounds like a steroid inflicted depressen got the better of him or he led a secret double life where maybe an illness arose from and he could not take the thought of the world knowing it. there aren’t THAT many things that make a man commit suicide.

  6. Rania says:

I truly feel it was not suicide

  13. Jaqen H'Ghar says:

Man f**k concussions! I mean it’s assuming but given his profession I”m sure he had multiple concussions so I would bet money CTE is the reason. I’ve had ten myself and it’s amazing how effed up your head gets. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
