Danny Pino is joining “Scandal” in a recurring role, Variety has learned exclusively.

The “Law & Order: SVU” and “Cold Case” alum will appear in an arc during the current fifth season. Per Shondaland’s typical spoiler lockdown strategy, there’s no word on Pino’s character description nor how many episodes he will appear in or when they will all air. However, since he will be recurring, he’ll be playing a role that’s more than case-of-the-week territory.

While ABC has not made any character details available upon Variety‘s request, just for fun, one point of speculation falls under the umbrella of potential love interest for Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), as her relationship with Jake (Scott Foley) is quite complicated and she has split from the president (Tony Goldwyn), who’s enjoying a new flame in the series’ recent storyline — if Fitz has a new lady, it only seems fair Ms. Pope should enjoy some new romance, too. (But, for the record, Pino could be portraying any sort of character, love interest or not.)

Pino starred on “SVU” from 2011 until departing in 2015. Prior to that, he starred on “Cold Case” on CBS, and he’ll return to the network this summer, as a series regular on “BrainDead,” from “The Good Wife” creators Robert and Michelle King.

As for other new additions to “Scandal,” Joe Morton, aka Papa Pope, was upped to a series regular this season.

Pino is repped by ICM.

  1. Joanne says:

I quit watching Scandal this season because the writing and situations had gotten completely mundane and ridiculous. Hopefully Danny Pino becoming part of the cast and given a decent story line that doesn’t involve his being a “play toy” for Olivia Pope, Scandal could be rejuvenated. Right now, it STINKS. Perhaps Shonda should stop spreading herself so thin with too many projects or she should be replaced.

  2. krak says:

he is the new spy boy that daddypope sent to be inside of her daughter

  3. Carly says:

He could be coming on as part of Cyrus’ protégé’s team.

Scandal just got an early renewal for the 2016-2017 season.

I wish the show went back to OPA resolving client problems.

  4. carmablue says:

So, does that mean everything isn’t roses between Olivia and Jake? Why does she have to have a man in her life at all, this strong, independent woman. She’s played Fitz and Jake against each other constantly and now you possible will bring in another love interest for her. And one last question, why does Shonda seem to have a problem showing Black love? Is there a reason why Olivia can’t have a mature, committed, non-dysfunctional relationship with a black man who’s good to her and for her? Does everything have to be drama and angst? At this point, Olivia doesn’t deserve to have anyone until she can get herself together. They’ve made her so OOC—flighty, uncaring, unstable and needy–they’re turning the fans against her. This show has gone off the rails and I’m taking a sabbatical from it

  5. Tracy says:

Unless he is playing therapist, I say no.

  6. Mookie Glenn says:

The PR for this show is terrible. They haven’t put out any casting news or info that makes you want to start tuning in again. It feels as if they’re trying to kill this show or something.

  7. Nina says:

Because this is exactly what this sinking show really needs, adding yet another cast member to the already BLOATED cast. When will it end?

  8. Tracy says:

ABC needs to get this train wreck straigten out before adding more players.

  9. singsongsoy says:

Oh, here we go again. Is Liv & Pino going to have sex in first or second episode? Classless! Shonda, how about writing compelling story lines. And Olitz belongs together; not Liv humping endless numbers of other men. We’re not in high school. Write a loving ADULT relationship for Olivia and Fitz. Nothing else will do.

    • carmablue says:

So true! Fans watch for the bread and butter of the show (Olivia and Fitz) even though it is an illicit relationship. I’m not sure why the showrunners/writers can’t portray a relationship with a couple who talk with each other like mature adults to solve their problems. Enough angst already. And agree – they’ve turned Olivia in a classless, spineless Jezebel–which is the nicest thing I can say. Yes, she and Fitz should be together but I don’t want that now after what she’s done. The story has been ruined and I don’t think they can get it back on track.

  10. Does anyone care about this show any more? Olitz is what made the show a success. They need to go back to that winning formula. Enough of ‘Olake/Jalivia’ and which other gigolo Shonda and her silly crew have lined up for Olivia Pope. This show will be lucky to be renewed for the 2016 – 2017 season.

  11. Dunstan says:

More boring nighttime soap opera crap. Snore.
