VENICE, Italy — Emma Stone won the Venice Film Festival’s best actress prize Saturday for her role as Mia, an aspiring actress and playwright who’s deep into the magic of the old movie stars, in Damien Chazelle’s musical “La La Land.”

In a recent interview with Variety at the Telluride Film Festival where the film saw its North American debut, Stone talked about identifying with the character of Mia.

“I definitely understood the feeling of moving to Los Angeles and having a dream to be an actor in films and to get to be a part of things that I loved and inspire people in some way,” she said. “It’s pretty insane that we’re talking about this movie and it’s something that I’m so proud and excited to be a part of, when that is the goal of the character, is to be a part of something like this.”

Recent winners of the Coppa Volpi that have gone on to receive Oscar acting nominations include Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman (“The Master”), Colin Firth (“A Single Man”), Cate Blanchett (“I’m Not There”), Helen Mirren (“The Queen”), David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck.”), Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”), Julianne Moore (“Far from Heaven”) and Javier Bardem (“Before Night Falls”).

I’m so so happy for her. Emma Stone has always been a terrific actress and I’m among those who argue that her performance in Easy A was so incredible that it deserved to land her her first Oscar nomination. I’m glad she achieved this with her ferocious turn in Birdman and after a long list of box office hits proved herself to be so much more than a fantastic comedienne. She’s simply a phenomenal actress and watching her working with real auteurs now like Chazelle and Lanthimos is fnatastic. Can’t wait to see La La Land and I hope she’ll make it to the Oscars again as a lead this time around.

I’m overjoyed for Emma Stone! So glad to see her receiving this prize. She looks fantastic in this film, my most anticipated. Would’ve loved to see Damien Chazelle win the Golden Lion, but if this helps Stone’s chances at the Oscars, at least a nom, that’s worth it. Perhaps La La Land will win the big TIFF award, a la Slumdog Millionaire. We shall see!

  3. Emma Stone is an amazing actress so I’m sure she is good in this film. But she will never be as hot as she was in Easy A
