Kristen Stewart, Lena Dunham, Kate Beckinsale, Paul Dano, Daniel Radcliffe and Spike Lee were among the actors and actresses that paid a visit to the Variety Shutterstock portrait studio over the course of 2016’s Sundance Film Festival.
Variety‘s chief photographer Michael Buckner strayed from a generic backdrop for this year’s studio, instead fashioning a rustic, industrial set that featured a stained pallet floor.
“Every event has its own pressures, even though it seems like it’s the same kind of product,” said Buckner of his inaugural experience shooting the Variety Studio.
“Actors and actresses know what they’re doing and that’s a big help, so they kind of do 20-30% of your job for you,” he admitted. “When an actor wants to do something, you don’t stop them because that one thing that they want to give you will always lead into something else. Once people start having fun with it, it just skyrockets from there.”
“We love to see the artist, not the celebrity,” Buckner concluded
Celebrities including Lily-Rose Depp, Nick Jonas, Chelsea Handler, Ellen Page, Anderson Cooper, John Krasinski, Kathryn Hahn, Chloe Sevigny and Don Cheadle also visited Buckner in the studio.
