Robert De Niro compared Donald Trump to Travis Bickle, the mentally disturbed character he played in the 1976 movie “Taxi Driver.”

“What he has been saying is totally crazy, ridiculous, stuff that shouldn’t be even… he is totally nuts,” De Niro said.

His comments came during a Q&A at the Sarajevo Film Festival on Friday, according to the AP.

Elaborating on the character which earned the actor an Oscar nomination, De Niro said, “One of the things to me was just the irony at the end, [Bickle] is back driving a cab, celebrated, which is kind of relevant in some way today too.”

He then drew a comparison to the current presidential candidate for the Republican party: “People like Donald Trump who shouldn’t be where he is so… God help us.” The AP reports that De Niro’s comments were met with applause.

De Niro added during the Q&A that he thinks the media has focused too much attention on Donald Trump. But he has seen a shift in tone that now resembles, “Come on Donald, this is ridiculous, this is nuts, this is insane.”

The actor was attending the film festival, now in its 22nd year, to receive its first ever lifetime achievement award.

  1. Colleen Chittick says:

Want to see Taxi Driver again. What and where is it scheduled in the Greater Cleveland, Ohio market?

  2. Killary Shillton says:

If Donald had a sweet mohawk he’d get more votes.

  3. Alex says:

So old Bob played a nut in a movie (granted one of the greatest films ever made) so now that makes him an expert on mental illness? He should stick to what he’s been doing lately, making movies that suck.

  4. Sonny Skyhawk says:

Bobby DeNiro is right on. I have never in my lifetime, experienced a more caustic, ignorant and racist bigot than Donald Trump. To have the total film-flam run of the press and television cater to him , is beyond my imagination and comprehension. Thank someone’s God that he doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning because it would be a catastrophic administration.

    • Eric says:

what’s interesting is now I’ve seen a couple of articles in newspapers or online where some members of the media are stepping up and saying, “Oops, we created this. We didn’t think anything would come of it and we played along. And now here we are.”

  5. EricJ says:

Actually, I’d always used Travis Bickle as the perfect metaphor for the Trump -supporter-:
The low-rent guy with anger issues who just wants to take a gun to EVERYTHING in Our Troubled Society that frustrates him and “see the rain wipe it all away”, even if he has to take a gun to the opposition candidate to do it.

Trump only thought he was “joking” with the 2nd Amendment/Clinton comment…

  6. there more fiction in the campaign of Donald Trump, than a motion picture won Oscar for VFX

  7. BillUSA says:

Yeah Bob, you make a career out of portraying social deviants and have the audacity to criticize someone else on their sanity?

    Screw you lefty.

  8. jona says:

Hmm.. worked for you though didn’t it Bob?

  9. Alex says:

Really, Bob? Trump may be offensive to some people but at least he is honest unlike Crooked Hillary.

    • Have you visited Politifact and other sites that fact-check politicians? Trump makes Clinton look like a saint by comparison. He lies almost all the time, and he’ll even lie when people catch him out in a lie (say, swearing that the “Obama started ISIS” lie was just sarcasm, when he actively dismissed claims that he was joking). Instead of simply parroting the Trump campaign message, please think for yourself.

    • Marcos says:

      You’re being *sarcastic*, right?

  10. Deion Pinder says:

Travis Bickle might have been crazy but in the end he saved the girl and killed a few abusive pedophiles in the process.

The moral of the story? Trump might be crazy, but what if he saves the day at the end?

    • Marcos says:

That would have made for an interesting follow up question. Bickle does have some redeeming qualities. I’m not sure we can say the same for candidate Trump.

  11. Hyperbolic, but not without some merit: Trump is extremely thin-skinned and prone to encouraging violence. The sad bit? Travis Bickle probably has more empathy than Trump does.
