‘Pacific Rim 2’ Starring John Boyega Gets Release Date

'Pacific Rim 2' With John Boyega

Pacific Rim 2,” starring John Boyega of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” fame, has gotten a new release date. The sequel hits theaters on Feb. 23, 2018; it’s the first film slotted for that date.

The movie is the follow-up to 2013’s sci-fi actioner, which grossed more than $410 million at the worldwide box office on a $190 million budget. Steven S. DeKnight (“Daredevil”) will direct with Thomas Tull, Guillermo del Toro and Mary Parent returning to produce. Boyega and his manager Femi Oguns will also produce.

Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba’s character from the original film. The first “Pacific Rim,” directed by del Toro, also starred Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Robert Kazinsky.

“Pacific Rim” was set in the near future with Earth at war with the Kaiju, monsters that emerged from an interdimensional portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

Boyega is currently shooting “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” in which he reprises his role as stormtrooper Finn.

The Legendary Pictures film will be distributed by Universal Pictures around the world, with the exception of China.

They really gave this movie to a Daredevil guy? And not even Drew Goddard? That first season ended up being such a letdown after an incredible first half that I’m still furious about it. Add that to their only being one or two good moments from season 2 and you’ve created a compelling reason for me to be nervous that this is going to be a completely unoriginal crap pile that doesn’t do del Toro’s work justice in any way. I don’t want Marvel getting their dull dickprints all over anything else, they’ve already made Star Wars less interesting than the prequels. All that being said, I actually really liked Boyega and I’m excited to see him in something other than that wholly disappointing Star Wars ripoff.

  2. Bob says:

Meh, he was bad enough in Starwars, I don’t fancy watching him bumbling through Pacific Rim 2…

  3. EricJ says:

And for those who ask “Huh? Didn’t the first one flop?”, well, yes it did.
But that was before every studio now wanted to be Marvel, so the Jaegers can now fight Godzilla and Kong of Skull Island in Warner’s “Linked monster universe”.

(The moral of 2016: Just make ONE movie at a time. You’ll end up regretting it if you don’t.
It’s better to lose on one number at the roulette wheel than to lose on four or five.)

    • Renee Hogg says:

      $410 – $190 = $220 profit! Only flop is your comment.

      • Richard says:

The movie wasn’t great success. The marketing budget alone was over $100M so added to its production budget….

    • Kaiju This! says:

It didn’t flop. It made money and has a huge fan base out there hungry for more adventures. Just because a film doesn’t make 1 billion globally does not mean it’s a flop.

    Pacific Rim 2? Yay!!!
