Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in the upcoming horror-thriller “Mom and Dad” with production set to start in July.

Brian Taylor, who directed Cage in “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” will direct from his own script. The story follows a teenage girl and her little brother who must survive a wild 24 hours during which a mass hysteria of unknown origins causes parents to turn violently on their own kids.

The film will be produced by Tim Zajaros and Christopher Lemole, with Cassian Elwes and Jere Hausfater executive producing. This will be the second film for Armory and Elwes and their newly minted Zeal Media, following “Billionaire Boys Club.”

The Zeal Media announcement came on Tuesday, just before the Berlin Film Festival launched. XYZ Films will handle worldwide sales on “Mom and Dad” at Berlin.

“This is the kind of role Nick was put here to play,” Taylor said. “Human, funny, scary – somehow grounded while at the same time completely off the rails. For a filmmaker there is nothing quite like the experience of Nick Cage bringing a character you’ve written to life.”

Cage is repped by CAA, Mike Nilon at Link, and Jake Bloom and Patrick Knapp at Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal La Violette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman, LLP.
