‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Named Best Film at Australian Academy Int’l Awards

Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Carol” led the AACTA International Awards Friday night, both nabbing two awards from the Australian Academy.

The fifth Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts International awards event, which was held at Avalon Hollywood, honored George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” with the awards for best film and best direction. The post-apocalyptic epic also had an outstanding run at the AACTA’s domestic awards show in December, where the film received a total of eight awards.

“This year marks the first time we’ve seen an Australian film, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ win at our domestic awards in Sydney and then again at our International Awards in L.A., and we’re delighted to see our U.S. and British counterparts also recognize this excellence with Oscar and BAFTA nominations,” said AACTA and AFI CEO Damian Trewhella.

Also winning big, Todd Haynes’ lesbian romance “Carol” picked up the awards for best lead actress (Cate Blanchett) and best supporting actress (Rooney Mara).  The best lead actress win marks Oz native Blanchett’s seventh honor from the Australian Film Institute.

The best lead actor award was presented to Leonardo DiCaprio, who received the same honor in 2014 for his performance in “The Great Gatsby.”

The awards show will be broadcast exclusively in Australia on Foxtel on Jan. 30.
