Kate Winslet is in negotiations to star opposite Idris Elba in the romantic drama “The Mountain Between Us.”

Hany Abu-Assad is directing the film for Fox 2000, while Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping are producing through Fox-based Chernin Entertainment.

The movie is based on Charles Martin’s 2010 bestselling novel about a surgeon and woman who fall in love after being stranded following a plane crash. They must figure out how to escape the mountain wilderness, where the temperature drops to the teens at night, while suffering broken ribs and a leg fracture.

Elba has been attached to “The Mountain Between Us” since February.

“Star Wars: Rogue One” writer Chris Weitz penned the most recent draft of the screenplay, and J. Mills Goodloe and Scott Frank wrote earlier versions of the script.

Winslet has received seven Academy Award nominations, most recently for “Steve Jobs,” and won the Oscar in 2009 for “The Reader.” She starred in “Triple 9” and will appear with Will Smith in New Line’s drama “Collateral Beauty.”

Winslet is repped by CAA and United Agents.

  1. S. Arnold says:

I have enjoyed all of Charles Martin books and this was my favorite so happy there will be a movie. I hope a movie of Long Way Home will follow.

  2. Robert Penrod says:

Disgusting surrender to political correctness. There is nothing in the book to suggest Ben is black, nor a hint of any interracial romance. No problem with either, but I’d like the movie to be as pure as the book.

    • SK says:

pure is certainly a loaded word, and pure to what, your assumptions?

      • Hein says:

Well you see he might be or rather likely is a racist. Since he mentions himself that there is nothing to suggest in the book the skin color of any of the characters, Ben can be a black man and Ashley a white woman.. In this day and age nobody cares interracial relationships or couples other than racists, which is what Robert is. He is a white supremacist that does not like race mixing. So in this context his “pure” refers to not having a black man and a white woman as the main characters because is goes against his racist nature and his racist view of the world.

  3. Mary Ann says:

when will the movie come out..what date?

  4. I read the Mountain Between us, was a very good story, drama persona. If they can make the movie to as good as the movie it’ll be a winner
