“Star Trek Beyond” helmer Justin Lin has closed a deal to direct Legendary’s “Hot Wheels” based on the car toyline from Mattel.

He will also develop and produce the property through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner. Lin and Perfect Storm will also have an option to co-finance the movie.

Plot details are unknown at this time. Since the film still needs to find a writer, it’s not expected to be Lin’s next project.

Legendary’s Alex Garcia will oversee the movie for the company, while Universal will distribute the pic.

Hot Wheels is one of the world’s biggest toy brands, with Mattel claiming that it’s the best-selling toy in the world, with more than 5 billion tiny cars produced since 1968. According to Mattel, the company creates nine million cars every week and sells 10 every second.

Lin, who is repped by CAA and Cinetic Media, helped reboot the “The Fast and the Furious” franchise, beginning with “Tokyo Drift.” “Fast & Furious 6” was the last film he directed in the series. Following the success of those films, Lin went to produce and direct “Star Trek Beyond,” which has gone on to gross almost $336.5 million worldwide.

One more film for those too dim witted to follow any film made before the age of CGI.

Hopefully this doesn’t become like Transformers.

I love Justin Lin’s movies, good call on “Hot Wheels”, he’s back to familiar territory with race cars. “Tokyo Drift” is still my favorite of the “Fast” series, I know a lot of people don’t rate it that high. Lin’s always very good at mixing hip hop culture with his movies, it will be interesting to see what style Legendary goes with on “Hot Wheels”.
