Jeremy Irons and Matthias Schoenaerts have joined Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton in Fox’s spy thriller “Red Sparrow.”

Francis Lawrence, who helmed the final three films in the “Hunger Games” franchise, is re-teaming with Jennifer Lawrence for his latest directional effort. Fox has already dated “Red Sparrow” for Nov. 10, 2017.

The film is based on Jason Matthews’ novel of the same name. Justin Haythe re-wrote the script, originally by Eric Warren Singer. Chernin Entertainment is producing.

The book is set in modern-day Russia in the intelligence bureaucracy with a young woman drafted against her will to become a “sparrow,” a trained seductress assigned to operate against a first-tour CIA officer who handles the agency’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers fall into a spiral of attraction and deception that results in her leading life as a double agent.

Irons will next star in “Assassin’s Creed” and reprise his role as Alfred in Warner Bros.’ “Justice League.”

Schoenaerts’ recent credits include Tom Hooper’s “The Danish Girl” and “A Bigger Splash.” He’s also in Netflix’s upcoming movie “Our Souls at Night” with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.

Irons is repped by CAA. Schoenaets is repped by CAA and UBBA in Paris.

I’m looking forward to the film. I love the work Francis Lawrence does. I would love to see him get a lot more directing gigs now that he’s finish with The Hunger Games.

Yeah I’d think Matthias would be playing the love interest, no offense to Joel

  3. DougW says:

Edgerton is 42 – not exactly young, especially compared to Jen. He’s a terrific actor but not a “star.” Wish they’d gone with Ryan Gosling or someone else younger with true star quality. Sydney Pollack was great at casting these kinds of films. It’s a good book, first of a trilogy.
