Han Solo Film: Tessa Thompson and Zoe Kravitz Among Those Testing for Female Lead (EXCLUSIVE)

Han Solo

Though testing for Alden Ehrenreich’s co-stars for the upcoming Han Solo spin-off  has been slow and steady, the “Star Wars” anthology pic may be getting closer to adding another lead.

Sources tell Variety that “Selma” and “Creed” star Tessa Thompson, “Power Rangers” Naomi Scott, and Zoe Kravitz tested in London this week for the female lead in the yet-untitled project.

With production not starting till early 2017, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have taken their time in meeting with talent for the mystery female character as well as the role of Lando Calrissian. This would mark the second round of tests; a previous round took place earlier this summer. While it seems like a decision is on the horizon, sources it could still be a couple weeks till one is made.

As for the role of Calrissian, reports had surfaced that “Atlanta” star and creator Donald Glover was high on the list, but Disney and Lucasfilm still wanted a second round of tests to be certain on their decision. Solo’s friend was played by Billy Dee Williams in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”

The film is not only one of the more highly anticipated upcoming pics but also one of the more closely guarded projects in town. The casting of Solo was one of the largest and longest processes since Universal’s search for Christian Grey in “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Ehrenreich eventually won the part that Harrison Ford originated.

The pic is set to bow in theaters on May 25, 2018.

  1. Alex Meyer says:

    These look like good choices

  2. Movie stars, once upon a time, had something called “charisma”. These cookie-cutter “stars” today are at best interchangeable and worse– forgettable.

Chocolate -and -vanilla casting is not diversity as much as a self-conscious choice. And painfully obvious. Perception-wise, we are all racists, so let’s get over this.

“Hans Solo” as a movie is anticipated (curiosity) but will be a disappointment without a true movie star…like a young Harrison Ford or a young Mel Gibson. Whatever color his leading lady, it’s moot.

  3. TruFan says:

These are all extremely weak choices. Get someone else.

  4. Cherri Hart says:

“The film is not only one of the more highly anticipated upcoming pics” it WAS until Alden was cast

  5. jedi77 says:

Wasn’t there some stupid story line in a comic recently where it turned out Solo was married to a dark skinned girl?
And wasn’t tthat storyline supposed to canon?

Just the idea of it is wrong, and so unlike the character. It certainly makes no sense when his behaviour in the original trilogy is taken into account.

I hope that is not where they are going with this.

  6. IT--II--IT says:

INTEL RUN Hollywood BORING US with yet another franchise slum add on.

  7. loco73 says:

    A list of mediocrity.

  8. anonymous says:

Zoe Kravitz has never impressed me or been memorable in anything she’s been in. Not a good actress.

  9. Lara Q says:

Zoe`s a pretty mediocre actress.Tessa is already in that Thor movie and maybe a little too old,so give the other girl a go, whoever she is.

  10. Boba Phat says:

Why do all these old film franchises throwing whatever black actor or actress and slapping them to projects in the name of hollywood? Its stupid. Focus on Star Wars and Han Solo, enough with the nonsense. And Im not racist by a longshot…im mexican american..and Star Wars has always predominantly been white..So I wouls expect a white actress…Come on ppl.

    • maribel says:

The role could be San Solo, who’s dark-skinned in the comics.

    • Well seems like your issue with diversity isn’t making you seem like you aren’t racist. Also you can be ANY colour, any race and be racist against one, some or or all other colours / races mate.

Sana Solo, a woman who was his “scam wife” seems likely to be who she’s playing.

    • JK says:

@Boba Phat, of course you are a racist, who’s throwing black actors?, do you know that in the original Star Wars Han Solo best friend was a wokkie a giant dog?, and his second best friend was a black guy?, so if you can’t picture an african american actress in that picture, you have a problem, not Hollywood

    • Karl Reich says:

Mexican-American who looks at the world through European eyes. You of all people should be celebrating diversity, but you see it the opposite way. Being M.A. doesn’t mean you’re not racist, I’ve met racist Mexicans

  11. It’s going to be Power Rangers girl. She’s 23 and Alden is 26. They always cast younger actress. They’ll say they had the best chemistry or something. Just wait.

  12. Lionel says:

Please universe let it be Zoe Kravitz I’ve been wanting to see more of her since Mad Max Fury Road

  13. maya says:

    Zoe can’t act. Tessa can.
