‘Doctor Strange’ Outselling ‘Ant-Man,’ ‘Thor’ in Weekend Pre-Sales

Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” is dominating ticket pre-sales as it barrels toward what is shaping up to be a potent opening weekend.

The superhero adventure is the top seller on Fandango, with the ticketer reporting that it is out-pacing “Ant-Man” and the first “Thor” movie at the same point in their sales cycle. “Doctor Strange” is also the top-selling film on MovieTickets.com’s website. “Doctor Strange,” which centers on a brilliant surgeon (Benedict Cumberbatch) who turns to mysticism after an accident robs him of the use of his hands, is expected to dominate the box office, kicking off to roughly $70 million domestically. That would easily top the openings of “Ant-Man” ($57.2 million) and “Thor” ($65.7 million), though it would trial the kick-offs of other Marvel blockbusters such as “Guardians of the Galaxy” ($94.3 million) or “Captain America: Civil War” ($179.1 million).

The second top-selling film on Fandango is DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls,” which is projected to open to roughly $38 million. Early signs are positive for the animated film, which is outpacing “Home,” another DreamWorks hit that debuted to $51.2 million in 2015. War drama “Hacksaw Ridge” is the third-highest selling film on the service.

Fandango surveyed more than 1,000 “Doctor Strange” ticket-buyers and found that 97% said they were fans of the Marvel cinematic universe, 85% were interested in a darker superhero movie, and 82% were Cumberbatch fans.
