Producers from South Africa, Canada, the Netherlands, Poland and Mexico also receive spotlights

Angelo Defanti’s “Wind” and Lina Al-Abed’s “Ibrahim” feature among projects to be presented at the Cannes Film Market’s 2016 Producers Network, as its throws a spotlight on Brazil and Palestine via a link-up with Films from Rio and Palestine’s Future Logic.

Projects will be presented at two of the Producers Network’s networking breakfasts, which on other days, will focus on events with producers from South Africa, Canada, the Netherlands, Poland and Mexico.

A thriller, “Southwest Wind” is the first fiction feature from TV/docu producer Angelo Defanti, backed by Bárbara Defanti’s Sobretudo Produção, about a pacific young man faces a prediction that he will end up turning into a murderer.

In docu “Ibrahim,” Lina Al-Abed’s presents a portrait of her own father, a secret member of the Palestinian Militant Organization “Revolutionary Council” (Abu-Nidal), a notorious intelligence service. In 1987, Ibrahim left his home in Syria on a regular mission, never to return. The film sets out to determine what happened to him. Sak A Do produces.

Films from Rio and new Palestine initiative Future Logic will unveil six and seven films projects respectively at separate breakfast sessions. More than 200 producers and industry key players are expected to attend the seven sessions at te 13th Producers Network.

Founded in 2014, Films from Rio is an international promo and training initiative designed to develop international  films and TV shows established by an alliance of Rio de Janeiro film authorities: RioFilme, Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat of Culture, the FIRJAN Federation of Rio de Janeiro Industries, the Sebrae Brazilian Agency for Entrepreneurship and Rio Film Producers’ Union (SICAV).

The six Brazilian projects brought to Cannes have already been developed at the Rio Festival and traveled to Ventana Sur, in a partnership with Producers Network.

One, “Other Times,” directed by Christiane Jatahy (“A falta que nos move”), is about a 40-year-old writer who travels to an isolated hotel in the Mexican coast with her husband and son. Tatiana Leite’s Bubbles Project produces.

Malu Miranda’s Lupa Filmes will pitch J.C. Feyer’s “The Trace We Leave Behind,” exec produced by Fabien Westerhoff, a psychological thriller starring Leandra Leal (“A Wolf at the Door”), set against the background of hospital closures in Brazil.

Ailton Franco Jr. at Franco Filmes will unveil “Rivermovie,” the second feature from Ricardo Targino (“Quase Samba”). It will shoot in the Amazon jungle where a poet “serial killer,” a whore with musical skills and a foreigner docu-maker live out a love triangle.

In Vinícius Reis’ “Roller Coaster,” a company manager fires his whole team is forced into retirement outside Rio, suddenly required to return to the big city. Gisela Camara, at Tacacá Filmes is set to produce. Elaine Soares’ Oceano is backing Jura Capela’s “The Serpent” an adaptation of playwright Nelson Rodrigues work about a woman who forces her husband on her sister, who’s been married for a year but is still a virgin.

The six Rio projects will be presented Friday, May 13 during a Plage des Palmes Producers Network. Future Logic is a new promo initiative to support Palestine filmmakers interests worldwide.

“Palestinian cinema is in a unique situation because it’s no longer connected to one place. Its filmmakers are a diverse bunch, living all over the world with different life experiences,” explained Future Logic Co-Founder Raed Andoni

He added: “It’s hard for official Palestinian bodies to represent all Palestinian film-makers because they’re restricted to supporting those in the West Bank or Gaza.”

After making its debut at the 2015 Dubai international Film Market, Future Logic will present seven projects on May 17 at the Plage des Palmes.

Produced by Momento!, Ida.Ida, and Paris’ Galerie Imane Fares, “Ouroboros” is an experimental video directed by Basma Alsharif paying tribute to Gaza. Idioms Film backs Jamal Mahjoub’s “Reservation Zed,” a genre pic with albino revenants set in Rawabi, Palestine’s first planned city.

Mahdi Fleifel is set to direct the Nakba FilmWorks-produced “The Return,” in which two siblings leave Ain El-Helweh refugee camp, 25 miles south of Beirut –their home– to find a better life in Europe.

In the Freebird Films produced docu “You Reap What You Sow,” helmer Alaa Ashkar portrays a Palestine citizen of Israel documenting with his vidcam his exploration of his identity, which meets opposition from his family.

“Mafak” is the feature debut of Bassam Jerbawi, a best short winner with “Roos Daj” at the 2009 Dubai Fest. Shrihari Sathi produces for Rimsh Film.

In “Ghost Hunting,” director Raed Andoni assembles an eclectic group of Palestinians to rebuild the Israeli investigation center in which they were imprisoned, but never saw since constantly blindfolded. Palmyre Badinier produces for Les Films De Zayna.

Part of an ever-building portfolio of industry initiatives at Cannes Marché du Film targeting growth –sectorial, financial, territorial, talent – in the global film industry, the 2016 Producers Network runs May 12-18, via its networking breakfasts at the Riviera Plage des Palmes.
