Film Review: ‘The Divergent Series: Allegiant’

“Allegiant’s” opening weekend represents a major dip for the franchise; “Divergent” opened to $54.6 million in 2014 and “Insurgent” picked up $52.3 million in its 2015 debut. “Divergent” wound up with $150.9 million in total domestic grosses and “Insurgent” took in $130.2 million. The series, based on a collection of young adult novels by Veronica Roth, follows heroine Tris through a dystopian Chicago as she rebels against the fascist system that rules its inhabitants. Theo James, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller also star. A fourth chapter in the franchise — “Ascendant” — is due out next year.

Disney’s “Zootopia,” on the other hand, continues to surpass expectations, with as much as $40 million expected from this weekend, its third frame. The animated social equality-driven animal pic picked up $10 million from 3,959 sites on Friday, forecasting a domestic cume of more than $200 million by Sunday’s end. Jason Bateman also stars.

In a distant third place is Paramount’s intense thriller “10 Cloverfield Lane,” spiritual sequel to the 2008 “Cloverfield.” The John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead starrer took in $3.7 million from 3,427 locations on Friday, tracking for a weekend total of $12 million. The film opened to $25 million and a buzzy critical reception last weekend.

‘Miracles From Heaven’ and the Changing Face of Religious Films

Jennifer Garner-starring faith-based outing “Miracles From Heaven” made its debut earlier this week, picking up $4.1 million more on Friday from 3,047 locations. The Sony release is slated for a five-day total of $15.8 million, on track to be the fourth biggest opening for a faith-based film.

“We’ve seen before, with projects like ‘Heaven is for Real,’ that audiences want more uplifting films that can inspire the whole family,” producer/minister DeVon Franklin told Variety. “This is a film that we are incredibly proud of and I am excited to see the impact of this powerful true story on families all around the country.”

In fifth place is the unsinkable “Deadpool,” which nabbed $2.3 million on Friday from 2,924 locations. Fox’s Ryan Reynolds starrer should add a weekend total of $8 million to is massive cumulative U.S. gross, which will near $350 million by Sunday’s end.

  4. Bono Vox Presents... U2's "Zootopia" says:

Shailene Woodley’s beauty speaks for itself. But a hard knock life being plucked around for bad movie roles has played it’s toal! She’s the Julia Roberts of her Generation, and Emma Roberts is the Emma Roberts of her generation. Poor Shailene needs to quit this stuff and do weird indie films like Marriage Material Breanne Larson. Many people love Bre bre-cause she’s genuine! Bre is the Julia Stiles of her Generation of you don’t count Julia Stiles!

  5. Brad says:

One Divergent movie was a stretch, it has gotten ridiculous. The seams are showing in the production quality, as well as these very novice actors

  6. Kurt says:

Maybe that will also put an end to the greed of making two movies from one book.

  7. Matt says:

Shailene Woodley used to be so beautiful.

Now she’s a tall version of Lena Dunham with a better face.
