Now in post, Mexico’s big art-genre offering is one of Latin America’s highest-profile titles for 2016
A predominant player at the 2016 Berlin Festival, where it is selling four world premieres in competition, Michael Weber’s the Match Factory has secured international sales rights to one of Latin America’s big Cannes hopes: “The Untamed,” from Cannes 2013 best director Amat Escalante.
“We are thrilled to work with Amat Escalante, who adds an ideal combination of passion and ambition to his films,” said Michael Weber, managing director of the Match Factory.
“We’ve been collaborating with the Match Factory for at least 10 years. We have no doubt that ‘Untamed’ is in the best hands,” said Jaime Romandia, of Mantarraya, which produced the film.
Now editing, “Untamed” sports the three hallmarks of Latin America’s big new plays for festival and international box office recognition: Prestige, and muscular international co-production backing; a movie that straddles arthouse and genre; a step up in scale, in both budget and production punch, such as VXF work from Denmark’s Peter Hjorth, who is also VFX supervisor on Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming “The Neon Demon.”
A genre-tinged drama about machismo, homophobia and the repression of women, shot in Escalante’s home town of Guanajuato, “The Untamed” is set in a neaby town on the Mexican lowlands, where a mysterious woman enters the lives of a young couple in crisis that is struggling to find each other but cannot avoid destroying themselves in the process. Something out of this reality will change them entirely.
“Untamed” is lead-produced by Mexico’s Mantarraya in co-production with France’s Le Pacte, Germany’s Match Factory Prods., Merfilms in Norway, Mexico’s Imcine film-TV institute and Denmark’s Snow Globe Films.
