Longtime publicity and marketing executive Andrea Jaffe, who was once called the “iron-fisted personal publicist” of Tom Cruise and also worked closely with Oliver Stone, died Wednesday in Wilmington, N.C. after a lengthy illness.

She was the daughter of Leo Jaffe, the late Columbia Pictures chairman, and sister of producer and former Paramount Communications COO Stanley Jaffe.

In addition to Stone and Cruise, her publicity firm Andrea Jaffe and Associates represented high profile clients in the 1980s and 1990s including Richard Gere, Warren Beatty, Dustin Hoffman, Farrah Fawcett, Bette Midler, Sissy Spacek and filmmaker Michael Apted. She also repped production firms including Sherry Lansing Productions and Largo Entertainment. Among the films she handled publicity for were “Platoon” “Fatal Attraction” “Rain Man,” “The Grifters,” “The Doors” and “JFK.”

In January 1992, she closed her firm to become president of marketing at 20th Century Fox, where she oversaw creative advertising, publicity and promotional efforts for all Fox films released domestically.

She later served as an independent marketing consultant for films and producers and worked with non-profit organizations, including Save the Children, in the Southeast.

She is survived by brothers Stanley, Ira, Howard and sister Marcia and nieces and nephews Betsy, Bobby, Alexander, Katie, Wendy, Eric, Leah, Todd and Dana.

Donations may be made to the Save the Children Foundation.
