Kino Lorber has acquired all U.S. rights to Philippe Faucon’s “Fatima,” which won France’s prestigious Louis Delluc award and has been nominated for four Cesar nods (France’s equivalent to the Oscars).
The movie, which world premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, will have its U.S. premiere early next month at the upcoming New-York set Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, a festival organized by Unifrance and the Film Society of Lincoln Center. “Fatima” will then play at COLCOA, the Los Angeles-based French film festival, in April.
In addition to winning a Louis Delluc prize – an award given by film critics and headed by former Cannes president Gilles Jacob — “Fatima” won best script at this year’s Lumieres Awards, the French equivalent to the Golden Globes. The movie will compete in all major categories at the Cesar ceremony on Friday.
Kino Lorber is planning a national theatrical release for the film on the heels of its Rendez-Vous with French Cinema premiere. The film will then roll out on VOD and home media by year-end.
Inspired by a true story of North African writer Fatima Elayoubi, “Fatima” tells the tale of a middle-age woman (Soria Zeroual) who raises her two teenage daughters the best she can while working as a maid to make ends meet.
“Without exploitively treating the worldwide immigration crisis, Phillippe Faucon intimately reveals Fatima’s personal world of care and hope, deepening our empathy for a true “mother courage” as we watch her play out a quietly heroic role,” said Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber.

Deal was negotiated between Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber and Pyramide Films’ head of sales Agathe Valentin.
