Universal’s Illumination scores at French fest with fifth animated feature
ANNECY — Illumination Entertainment’s “The Secret Life of Pets” world premiered at France’s Annecy Animation Festival Thursday night to frequent laughter and a final enthusiastic two-minutes of applause.
Audiences reacted positively to film’s set up, with slight echoes of “Toy Story” as pets spring into human life once their owners are out of the house, as well as its constant gags, and wide gamut of primary tones.
“Great,” “delicious,” “very drole” were three indicative audience reactions. “When you don’t think animation can do anything new with animals, Illumination comes along and surprises you,” one audience member said. Critical reaction at Annecy looked like it could be more positive than for “Minions.”
