‘Deadpool’ Sinks Box Office Newcomers on Way to $55 Million Weekend

Deadpool” is proving to be relentless in its box office domination: The Merc with a Mouth should pull in $55 million in its second weekend after picking up $16 million on Friday, according to studio estimates.

The Ryan Reynolds-starring Fox release, which grossed $180 million in its first week, is far and away the highest earner at the multiplex this weekend. After setting a new record for biggest R-rated debut, “Deadpool” could even become the 15th movie in history to take in at least $60 million domestically in its second weekend, leaving it with around $240 million for its first 10 days. The superhero comedy is unspooling in 3,722 locations.

Behind “Deadpool” is kid-friendly stalwart “Kung Fu Panda 3,” which generated $3 million on Friday and ought to wrap up the weekend with $12 million, pushing its domestic cume past $115 million. Fox’s Jack Black starrer is playing in 3,448 locations.

In third place is Sony’s faith-based pic “Risen,” rolling out in 2,915 locations. “Risen” took in $4 million on Friday and is expected to hit up to $12 million in its debut weekend.

Warner Bros.’ “How to Be Single,” starring Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson, is still chugging along at 3,357 locations with a Friday take of $2.6 million and an expected weekend total of $8 million

A24’s historical thriller “The Witch” picked up $3 million on Friday and should generate a three-day total of $8 million from 2,046 locations. Jesse Owens biopic “Race” from Focus Features took in $2 million on Friday, putting it on track for a weekend haul of $7 million from 2,369 locations.
