Controversial Vaccine Documentary Debuts in NYC, Plots Theatrical Expansion

'Vaxxed,' Controversial Vaccine Documentary, Plots National

A week after it was pulled from the Tribeca Film Festival,  “Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe” debuted at New York City’s Angelika Film Center to an estimated $22,000 in receipts.

In two weeks, the controversial documentary will open at the Laemmle in Santa Monica, and possibly one or two other Los Angeles locations. Distributor Cinema Libre Studio hopes to expand the film’s national footprint in the coming months, eventually screening “Vaxxed” in between 250 and 300 theaters before it debuts on home entertainment platforms in July.

The film raises questions about the link between vaccinations and autism — a potential connection that has been widely discredited in the scientific and medical communities. It was originally intended to debut in June, but Cinema Libre rushed the film into theaters in order to hit back at what it argues is misrepresentation in the media.

In an interview with Variety, Philippe Diaz, chairman of Cinema Libre, said the picture was not “anti-vaccination.”

“It would be a bit crazy to say that,” said Diaz. “We know vaccinations save the lives of children.”

Instead, he said “Vaxxed” alleges that a former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention employee, William Thompson, covered up research into vaccinations’ impact on autism and should be forced to testify to Congress.

“The movie doesn’t take a position on what creates autism or if a vaccine is safe,” said Diaz. “The only thing it is trying to do is to get this man to testify.”

The film also argues that vaccinations may be administered to children too early in their development and should potentially be given at a later age, said Diaz.

However, critics charge that “Vaxxed” director and co-writer Andrew Wakefield has emboldened the anti-vaccination movement with the publication of discredited research arguing there is a possible connection between a vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella and the appearance of autism. Wakefield’s paper was later retracted by its publisher, the British medical journal The Lancet, and his medical license was revoked over ethical issues. In recent years, the push against childhood vaccinations has led to a rise in preventible diseases such as measles.

Reviewers, for their part, appear to take issue with claims that “Vaxxed” is not staking out a position against vaccinations. IndieWire’s Eric Kohn, for instance, wrote, “In a statement leading up to the film’s release, Wakefield’s co-writer Del Bigtree claimed that ‘Vaxxed’ is ‘not an anti-vaccine movie,’ which is kind of like saying ‘Triumph of the Will’ is anti-Hitler.”

Despite the reviews, Diaz is pleased by the response from audiences. Wakefield has been appearing at two question and answer sessions a day, and Diaz said there have been a few pointed questioners, but no protests. It’s a debate, the distributor said he encourages. When Tribeca organizers called him to tell him that the film was being pulled, Diaz said he urged the festival to host screenings where Wakefield could face off with members of the medical community who disagreed with his position.

“We want people to come into theaters and have a discussion,” said Diaz.

The film will also be shown at the Houston Film Festival and the Manhattan Film Festival, and there are discussions to include the picture in other festival lineups, Diaz said. However, Tribeca’s decision still smarts.

“I got in heated discussions with the directors of Tribeca and told them that they were sending a message to the entire world that the movie is bad,” he said, adding, “They told us themselves that there was too much pressure from their sponsors.”

A spokeswoman for the festival declined to comment. In a statement announcing Tribeca’s decision not to screen the film, founder Robert De Niro, who has an autistic child, said, “My intent in screening this film was to provide an opportunity for conversation around an issue that is deeply personal to me and my family. But after reviewing it over the past few days with the Tribeca Film Festival team and others from the scientific community, we do not believe it contributes to or furthers the discussion I had hoped for.”

  1. Sara Dodge says:

Why has Robert DeNiro been on the Today Show twice asking people to go see this movie and that he regrets pulling it due to pressure from what his co-founder Jane claims came from the sponsors and donors and film makers.

  2. Shel says:

Parents need to get their children tested for possible MTHFR mutations. People with this cannot properly detox the load of things like toxins from heavy metals- vaccine ingredients, lead, and things like mold, pesticides… this may be why some seem unaffected (I say “seem”) and some react with horrible after-effects or death from vaccines.

  3. Rick Stevens says:

This is an important movie. The film is not “crazy,’ or “insane.” It is sane, scientific and measured. The autism epidemic is growing exponentially. It did not exist when I was a child. Yet now it is a major threat to our culture. Note that there are certain demographics have NO EPIDEMIC of autism. These are the same demographics where high risk treatment of babies is prevented.

    • Tom says:

It’s only “growing” because it was redefined to include other disorders on the spectrum (thus the name “autism spectrum disorder” (ASD) and because physicians are looking for it more intently. If you apply the definition from the 1980s, the incidence has not changed.

And more importantly, there is NO evidence and NO mechanism for vaccines causing ASD. Period.

Is Tom saying autism has always been around? That doctors are just better at seeing it? Can Tom show evidence that autism has always been around? The CDC says autism rates are rising. Does Tom have insider knowledge that he wants to share? Maybe he could make his own whistleblower movie.

Or maybe Tom should do a bit more reading before he speaks because he is not contributing to the discussion with obvious untruths.

  4. Tom says:

Change “Controversial” to “Dishonest” and you’ll have an accurate title for this report.

Good on you Wakefield, who the hell would want to destroy their career for a lie. NO ONE. Andy made a few small mistake I am sure, but nothing like the CDC leaving out crucial data.

SOMEONE’S GOT TO DO SOMETHING – because the amount of autism we will have in males in 20 yrs time is deeply concerning. conspiracy theory? – well it makes one friggin wonder. cos 80% of males, well that’s massive depopulation!

    • estepheavfm says:

We will agree, of course, that CDC executives did not make a “mistake.” The official records, the evidence, the testimony of the top participant and witness, points to malpractice, fraud and other felonies. It was premeditated with the consequences completely known to those who committed the offenses.

    • Jim says:

I would more rather say not so much massive depopulation, but unchecked capitalism and greed rearing it’s ugly head in Big Pharma, thereby creating a generation of vaccine damaged children, equal to or more disastrous than the thalidomide generation. IT HAS TO STOP!

  6. Jenny says:

Congratulations Variety, you have now come close to almost writing a fair account of event. It would be great if you could actually look into the Wakefield issue, as the most defining characteristic of his study was the fact that he found the measles virus in the gastrointestinal tracks of autistic children.

“At the heart of the Wakefield controversy has been whether or not the children in the study were, in fact, diagnosed with non-specific colitis, or if that information had been fabricated — allegations that were largely initiated by investigative journalist Brian Deer.

Writing in the BMJ, research microbiologist David Lewis, of the National Whistleblowers Center, explains that he reviewed histopathological grading sheets by two of Dr. Wakefield’s coauthors, pathologists Amar Dhillon and Andrew Anthony, and concluded there was no fraud committed by Dr. Wakefield:

“As a research microbiologist involved with the collection and examination of colonic biopsy samples, I do not believe that Dr. Wakefield intentionally misinterpreted the grading sheets as evidence of “non-specific colitis.” Dhillon indicated “non-specific” in a box associated, in some cases, with other forms of colitis. In addition, if Anthony’s grading sheets are similar to ones he completed for the Lancet article, they suggest that he diagnosed “colitis” in a number of the children.”

In a press release, Lewis continued:

“The grading sheets and other evidence in Wakefield’s files clearly show that it is unreasonable to conclude, based on a comparison of the histological records, that Andrew Wakefield ‘faked’ a link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

Now that these records have seen the light of day, it is time for others to stop using them for this purpose as well. False allegations of research misconduct can destroy the careers of even the most accomplished and reputable scientists overnight. It may take years for them to prove their innocence; and even then the damages are often irreparable. In cases where mistakes are made, every effort should be taken to fully restore the reputations and careers of scientists who are falsely accused of research misconduct.” “

  7. Nancy Tanner says:

I am so glad this film is getting the attention and exposure it needs to go forward. Opening up conversation, and validating all of the families that have been waiting to be heard is so important.

The systematic dismissal of of parents with questions is what one would think unfathomable, but it is reality in the USA.

Thank you to the brave ones that are stepping out to put this story on screen, open eyes, wake people up, start asking more questions, and start standing up for your rights!

  8. Natalie M. says:

The mainstream media repeatedly neglects to mention that Dr.Andrew Wakefield was later vindicated after the big smear job that was launched against him. His study was not fraudulent, but those who smeared him were!

    Katarina9 Just now

Mr. Del Bigtree and Mr. Robert De Niro have just found out, as have millions of vaccine damaged citizens who have been trying to get justice for decades, that their voices, along with so many others, have just been shut down, mulched, and silenced, by the almighty Vaccine Machine. All I can tell you is this. You are not alone. If every darn person you know stands up and defies this atrocity, dump the vaccine industry Ads, and find some balls, this situation can be turned around. The MEDIA and our own medical professionals and governments are complicit in this atrocity toward human beings, our families, our children and our future.

  10. Catherine E. says:

Del Bigtree and Robert De Niro are just finding out what many vaccine damaged have already found out. Dissenting voices will be ground up and mulched, no matter what profession or “voice” they have to bring to bear on the Vaccine Machine.

  11. Marc says:

**Please note that this article incorrectly states that Dr. William Thompson is “a former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention employee”. He is in fact currently employed by the CDC.

  12. DC says:

I CANNOT wait to see this movie with family and friends.

I have 5 vaccine injured in my family (or so I thought – I just found out about an aunt and cousin who were injured by flu shots in recent years too). Every single one of our injuries matched the possible side effects on the vaccines. Why isn’t it a crime that doctors, nurses, and pharmacists are not required to disclose the side effects for vaccines? Why did I have to find the drug inserts online after the fact? Swelling of the brain, eye nerve damage, hearing loss, cellulitis, convulsions, fever, tendinitis, and death – those are the gifts my family received due to receiving these so-called “safe” vaccines. Those were the side effects that I was not allowed to see. In fact, nobody is allowed to see them. You are simply handed a bogus generic sheet from the CDC that says you might have a little bit of soreness or slight fever….nothing to worry about.

I’ll tell you this – even if you don’t vaccinate yourself or loved ones – you are just as much at risk of being infected from these vaccine contaminants as those who vaccinate. SV40 is one contaminant that our health officials admit was in vaccines. Check the peer reviewed medical journals if you don’t believe me. The only problem is that they say it has been out of vaccines for decades – since the 1960’s. Really? Then why did I talk to a Mom whose unvaccinated son test positive for it just 10 years ago? His parents were vaccinated….hmmmm…

Vaccines do cause Autism. It was listed as a possible side effect to Tripedia given to babies beginning 2 mo. old. My child got Autism from his vaccines after developing inflammation of the brain, cellulitis, fever, and full blown convulsions after his shots. Do you have any idea how scary it is to have your infant in your arms with his body convulsing and eyes rolling back into his head? It took us around $40,000 and lots of alternative care to make him well after the medical community made him so sick.

The makers of this documentary deserve a standing ovation. They risked their careers and lives to deliver the truth.

  13. Megan Allen says:

Its definitely worth seeing – make up your own mind when you here the lies and cover-up over a top scientist at the CDC tell you that he lied. He threw data in a trash can with his colleagues and manipulated data so that it wouldn’t reveal the facts, that the MMR was associated with increased rates of autism when given at a certain age. It would be irresponsible to ignore this glaring accusation of fraud.

  14. Jim says:

Great news! Can’t wait to see it!

  15. Mark Hall says:

If anyone still questions the link between vaccines and autism, watch this interview done by Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Dr. Gupta is NOT Jenny McCarthy. Wake up, America!

    • The Vaccination shots are bad for dogs and other non human animals too. They sometimes convulse having a seizure after the shots. People yell rabies, we did not give the shot it in time to give people fear.

  16. Sean says:

It’s obvious Tribeca ala DeNiro had every intention of airing this film. However, as mentioned, the $ponsors who themselves are affiliated w/pHARMa, put the kibosh on airing this highly anticipated film.
What is troubling to pHARMa, who is more concerned w/shareholder profits than the fact that vaccines have caused considerable harm and death to those who have been inoculated, is that their profit margin will be negatively affected, bottom line.

Parents and individuals are catching on via their own vaccine-damaged children and themselves that vaccines are not w/o risk and cause neurological damage due to the myriad number of neuro-toxic and carcinogenic heavy metals and chemicals contained within vaccines. Check out an insert label to see for yourself.

Appx $100 million is paid out each yr for vaccine injury/death and over $3.4 billion since ’86 when Congress enacted legislation to indemnify vaccine manufacturers from liability due to the thousands of lawsuits filed on behalf of families whose children were seriously injured and/or died from the DTP vaccine. By age 18, a child has received upwards of 69 doses of 16 vaccines w/more being developed. ‘Pincushions of profit’ is how pHARMa sees our children and ourselves.

Wakefield is Not the Only Researcher to Look Into the Possible Connection Between MMR Vaccine, Bowel Disease and Autism

While the press continues to battle over Dr. Wakefield’s purported guilt or innocence, the bigger issue — that there appears to be a connection between inflammation, and particularly gut inflammation, and autism — is getting lost in the shuffle. Plus, other research has confirmed Wakefield’s hotly contested findings, linking the MMR triple vaccine with bowel disease and autism — contrary to what you might hear in the press.

      The Daily Mail reported:

” … a team from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina are examining 275 children with regressive autism and bowel disease – and of the 82 tested so far, 70 prove positive for the measles virus … the team’s leader, Dr Stephen Walker, said: ‘Of the handful of results we have in so far, all are vaccine strain and none are wild measles.

This research proves that in the gastrointestinal tract of a number of children who have been diagnosed with regressive autism, there is evidence of measles virus. What it means is that the study done earlier by Dr Wakefield and published in 1998 is correct.

That study didn’t draw any conclusions about specifically what it means to find measles virus in the gut, but the implication is it may be coming from the MMR vaccine. If that’s the case, and this live virus is residing in the gastrointestinal tract of some children, and then they have GI inflammation and other problems, it may be related to the MMR.”

The lead researcher, Stephen J. Walker, Ph.D., was also quick to state however, that this does not necessarily mean the MMR vaccine causes autism. Still, his research notes the same connection that Wakefield’s team did, which is that many autistic children have chronic bowel inflammation, and have the vaccine strain of the measles virus in their intestines.

Says Dr. Wakefield of his original 1998 findings:

“… it’s been replicated in Canada, in the U.S., in Venezuela, in Italy… [but] they never get mentioned. All you ever hear is that no one else has ever been able to replicate the findings. I’m afraid that is false.”

You can see a list of 28 studies from around the world that support Dr. Wakefield’s controversial findings in this past article. In addition to his hotly contested MMR study, Dr. Wakefield has published dozens of peer-reviewed papers looking at the mechanism and cause of inflammatory bowel disease, and has extensively investigated the brain-bowel connection in the context of children with developmental disorders such as autism. As described below, other researchers are also doing the same …

When and where did you see the film Jimmy? Did you ask questions afterward or make your opinions known to the filmmakers?

  18. Public Statement released yesterday:

My name is Del Bigtree. I am the producer of the film Vaxxed: From Cover-Up To Catastrophe. From the moment I started working on this movie people have asked why I would choose to leave my career as a respected producer on the medical talk show, The Doctors, to make a movie with Dr. Andrew Wakefield, arguably the most controversial figure in modern medicine. The answer is I had no choice.

Upon meeting Andrew (who I will refer to as Andy) I was haunted by all of the headlines that preceded him, “Baby Killer,” “Father of the anti-vax movement,” “The fraudulent Doctor who created a fake paper linking vaccines to autism,” “The doctor who performed unnecessary experiments on innocent children,” the list went on and on. But when Andy showed me the documentary film he was making about Dr. William Thompson, the CDC whistleblower, I was blown away. The evidence was undeniable. The CDC had lied to the world. It was the most important story of my life. As an Emmy Award-winning medical producer I knew I had the skill to help Andy deliver a documentary about complicated science, but before I could move forward I had to investigate Andy himself.

As soon as I started looking into the facts behind the case against Andy I realized that I had been repeating a lot of bumper sticker slogans about his story that weren’t actually true. To begin with I was shocked to discover that Andy never came out against vaccines. WHAT?! What Andy had recommended was that parents vaccinate their children with the single Measles, single Mumps, and single Rubella vaccines instead of the triple MMR vaccine, which many parents were blaming for their child’s regression into autism. Seems reasonable enough. More alarming was the realization that the Lancet paper in question clearly states that it does not prove a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. Though the majority of parents in the study and tens of thousands world wide have made this claim, the paper admitted that more studies needed to be done before coming to a definitive conclusion.

I was surprised to find that the allegations against Andy were not initiated by a medical investigator or scientific institution, but by a freelance journalist named Brian Deer who wrote a Sunday Times article in the U.K. that was as scientifically accurate as a gossip column. The General Medical Council in the U.K. then used Brian’s imaginative retelling of the story behind the Lancet paper as grounds for a medical trial that ultimately stripped Andy of his medical license.

I had always heard the Lancet paper described as Andrew Wakefield’s fraud, but upon actually reading it the first thing one discovers is that there were twelve other co-authors on the paper. The claim that Andy used fake data to create a fraudulent paper is absurd when you realize that among his co-authors were top scientists in their fields who were responsible for performing the tests, outputting the data, and ultimately verifying that it was correctly represented in the paper before signing their names to it. If there was fraud all thirteen authors were implicated. So why is Andy the only one of the 13 co-authors currently barred from practicing medicine in the U.K.? Maybe because he was the only doctor brave enough to ignore pressure from the vaccine manufacturers and the U.K. Ministry of Health to begin larger, more in depth studies investigating the hypothesis that the MMR was causing autism in our children; studies that he never got to finish.

There is also the assertion that the Lancet study had been paid for by a biased outside source, which is easily refuted by following the paper trail that shows all financial contributions for the study were accepted by the Royal Free Hospital after the study had been completed.

Lastly the most disturbing accusation for me was the claim that Andy performed unnecessary procedures on innocent (mentally disabled) children. That sounds horrible until you discover that the parents had entered their children into the study because they were suffering from agonizing gastrointestinal pain and bowel issues in addition to their autism. The “unnecessary procedures” refers to the colonoscopies and intestinal biopsies that were performed by Andy’s colleagues. I don’t know how a gastroenterologist is supposed to investigate possible intestinal disease without performing these standard tests, but then again, I am not a doctor. And neither is the journalist who concocted this unfortunate obstruction of medical inquiry.

History has shown us time and time again that people like Galileo, who break from the scientific consensus to reveal discoveries like “the earth is not the center of the universe,” are often persecuted. I suppose it’s one of our great human flaws. Both of these men were essentially tried for heresy. The difference is that the imprisonment of Galileo just meant there would be a delay in the advancement of modern astronomy and physics. In Andy’s case we may be responsible for a civilization-ending epidemic of autism that has skyrocketed from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 45 children in less than forty years and is on a crash course for 1 in 2 by 2032. And still the CDC attempts to set our minds at ease with their official statement “we do not know what’s causing autism.”

In the Unites States of America we can never allow ourselves to believe that there is a case so sound that we avoid listening to a new witness or shirk our responsibility to investigate new forensic evidence. In the case of the possible link between vaccines and autism we have a new witness in the courageous CDC whistleblower, Dr. William Thompson, and we have new forensic evidence in the documents and data that he has provided us, much of which he claims was destroyed by the CDC.

Ultimately a documentary is not a court of law. It cannot prosecute a case. As journalists and filmmakers we can only reveal information as it is discovered and ask the questions we believe the citizens of the world should be asking. Much of the mainstream media have come out against this film warning people not to see it because it asks uncomfortable questions about the safety of the MMR vaccine. If we cannot ask important questions about the safety of a vaccine then I fear for more than the health of our children, I fear for the health of our democracy.

We should not allow anyone to dictate what we say, what we do, and what we see. You still have the power to make up your own mind. We have made a very important film. It shines a spotlight on damning evidence that the pharmaceutical industry and the CDC do not want you to see. That is probably because they know if you do see it you will find yourself in the same predicament as me for as Einstein said “Those who have the privilege to know have the duty to act.”

    Sincerely
Del Bigtree – producer of Vaxxed: From Cover-Up To Catastrophe

Thanks for posting the Bigtree statement. Looks the Academy Award is going to be in order here for VAXXED. It is an artistically high quality documentary and on a topic that ranks as high as can be imagined — a heroic and inspiring achievement. Considering the huge amount of bulling by hundreds-of-billions dollar international profiteers, with their private detectives, their bought-off compromised scientists, paid-off journalists and bribed public servants it will be a rough year for honest journalists and truth tellers in general who expose this ongoing major crime story. But the film team is made up of GREAT men and women, and they, and we, shall persevere.

  19. Cherry Picking: CDC’s Woeful, Biased Representation of The Available Science

In all of their communications to the public on causes of autism, CDC fails to consider the bulk of the available science that not only shows association between autism and vaccines, but also points squarely to the role of aluminum and mercury as fundamental to the etiology of autism via chronic microglial activation. I know this because I’ve read the science the CDC has not read. Between November 2015 and February 2016, I read over 3,000 published and peer-reviewed studies on autism – not on vaccines intentionally – but rather on autism. I took the position of geneticist who wanted to know how traits as unique as autism – lack of or loss of language abilities, aberrant motor movements, differences in executive functions – might be explained considering both genetic and environmental factors.
