‘Florence Foster Jenkins’ Gets Re-Release as Best Actress Race Tightens

Meryl Streep will give an encore performance.

Paramount Pictures plans to re-release “Florence Foster Jenkins,” a period comedy that stars Streep as a woefully off-key opera singer.

The film will screen in select theaters starting on Dec. 2. It seems as though the studio will use the re-release to try to bolster the film’s awards chances. Streep, who already holds the record for Oscar nominations with 19, could score another nod for best actress. Her co-star Hugh Grant is a contender in the supporting actor category. Best actress is shaping up to be a tight race, with Natalie Portman (“Jackie”), Emma Stone (“La La Land”), and Annette Bening (“20th Century Women”) all expected to score invites to the Oscars.

The film seems like a strong candidate for Golden Globes love given that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association rewards comedies separately from dramas. Streep will receive the Cecil B. Demille Award at this year’s Globes, honoring her career achievement.

Florence Foster Jenkins” was released last summer and made $27 million to date. It debuts on home entertainment platforms on Dec. 13. During the re-release, the film will show in theaters in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C., and other major cities.
